The issues that this article deals with are those related to the textile, clothing and footwear industry. The main point raised is that of an assistance package, which the cabinet is due to approve by November. Another issue raised is the effect that the proposed tariff reductions will have on the business and the amount of employees within this sector.

In the article Paul Moore, CEO of Pacific Brands, states "Lower tariffs will mean job cuts…we have done enough restructuring…we prefer to make our products here, but if they force us overseas, then we'll go." The Australian industry is worried about the tariffs as it will make the goods coming into Australia cheaper which may also lead to consumers buying overseas products rather than those made in Australia. However, is a positive move as it will make Australia more competitive within the TCF industry. It is hard to compete with labour intensive countries such as those within Asia as they have an extremely labour intensive population and therefore labour is cheap and plentiful. Overseas investors are drawn to those countries as it is cheap for them to produce and there is no minimum wage or specific working conditions.

The govt. is hoping that by reducing tariffs that our TCF industry will gain international competitiveness and it may also lead to overseas countries reducing the tariffs on our exports. Even though it may at first lead to a decrease in revenue for the govt. they are hoping it will later increase.

The govt. is responding to the issue of international competitiveness and imposing these tariffs as a result. The textile, clothing and footwear industry is worth $6 billion and is therefore a large part in the revenue we produce. In the December quarter of 001 alone Australia manufactured $,6m in exports.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Tariffs still suit shrinking textile sector

Since the early 10's the percentage of household expenditure on TCF's dropped from 4. to . per cent, while value added fell by 4 per cent in real terms. Although as tariffs on imported clothes have fallen from 55 per cent in 10 to 5 per cent today, and form 45 per cent to 15 per cent on footwear, the market share of imported clothing has gone form 1 per cent to 45 per cent, and from 6 per cent to 65 per cent for imported footwear and leather goods. This, however, has led to a 40 per cent drop in employment by TCF manufacturing firms to about 58,000 people by June 001.

The govt. is now planning another round of tariff cuts, and the largest package this industry has ever received- a five year, $678m subsidy scheme. The cabinet is also set to approve a new industry plan by November. The govt. is trying to get our manufacturing companies to focus on the Niche markets within the manufacturing industry, e.g. RM Williams boots and Drizabone clothing, in order to compete, as we are never going to be able to compete against our Asian competitors by making shirts and singlets.

Although unions within the TCF industry will try to appeal it, the govt. is still going to go ahead with the tariff cuts. This, although it may lead to some unemployment, will allow us to become a great deal more competitive within the industry, and against our Asian neighbours. The govt is using its assistance package to try sustaining employment within the industry.

US District Judge Lawrence Kahn rejected the two Syracuse taverns bar owner's preliminary injunction to stop New York from enforcing its new smoking law †Clean Indoor Air Act. This has created a great turmoil among the restaurant and bar owners, as they believe that a total ban on smoking will definitely affect their business in terms of profit making. But the state argues that occupational health and safety is of a greater concern than economic prosperity of the bars.

Governmental intervention in the US and Canada regarding smoking in public and private work places was initially geared to take precaution against accidental fire hazards.1 But today with the breakthrough in technology medical science has been able to provide the public with adequate awareness of the harm caused by active as well as passive smoking. Cigarette smoking can cause damage to some of the most important organs of the body namely lungs, heart and brain. There is a high correlation between cigarette smoking and cancer of the lungs. It is very nerve-racking to find out about the substances that are found in tobacco namely tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide, calcium, nitrogen dioxide, ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and hydrogen sulphide.

The deleterious effects of these substances are proven. Cadmium and benezpyrene causes cancer, and carbon monoxide robs the blood of oxygen. It was even intimidating to discover that the concentration of the hazardous substances is higher in sidestream smoke â€" smoke from the burning non-filtered end of cigarette than the mainstream smoke inhaled by the smokers.

Research reveal second had smoking kills about ,000 non-smokers each year from lung cancer. It causes up to 00,000 lung infections in babies and young children. Second hand smoking causes SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndromes). It causes 0 times as many lung cancer deaths as all the different kinds of pollutions combined and in a crowded restaurant or bar smoking can produce six times the pollution of a busy highway.

Given the facts concerning health hazards associated with cigarette smoking, my argument for the ban on smoking in bars and restaurants will focus from the perspective of moral and ethical issues concerning an individual's rights.

Bars and restaurants are important part of the western social life. And every individual regardless of his/her race, religion and habit has a statutory right to enjoy this freedom.

As business entities it is the bar and restaurant owners responsibility to provide its employees as well as customers a risk free environment. Defenders of businesses argue that the employer's primary responsibility is to maximize profit. And some times as in this case to minimize the hazardous condition in a closed environment by making a smoke free bar and restaurant the company has to settle for less profit. This is a conflicting responsibility for an employer, as he is required to maximize profit and at the same time provide a safe environment.4

The question that may rise is that, How can the employer be held responsible for a situation in which the employee voluntary accepts the job. Well in many cases individuals doesn't have option. For example a bar tender is aware of the danger he is exposed to as of sidestream smoke but bartending is the only job he knows and does best. He will not make as much money in any other job and as a free individual he also has the right to sell his skill to maximize his own profit. But it is absolutely inhumane to make profit at the expense of other human lives. It may be regarded as a criminal act as no individual has the right to inflict harm on another individual deliberately. Alan Gewirth states in his article †every person has the basic right not have cancer inflicted on him by the action of another person. The bar owners are very well made aware of the latest research on cigarette smoking and its high correlation with lung cancer and other pulmonary infections associated with smoking. In spite of ample knowledge on the deleterious consequence cigarette smoking causes these bar and restaurant owners inhumanly expose their employers and customers to a harmful environment. They are contributing to the causation of cancer and other lethal diseases knowingly. And I agree with Alan Gewirth that then these individuals are both causally and morally held guilty of their action.

Cigarette smoking is one of the major addiction problems in our society. And I consider it as a moral duty of every individual in the role of a parent, guardian, employer, employee that is to say, any individual who is in a position to contribute in bringing about a solution to this problem should voluntarily do so. As citizens of civilized society we are taught every day to make rational choices, and smoking whether active or passive is not a rational choice. Therefore any step to minimize this action is a rational or moral action. As philosopher Immanuel Kant puts it, being rational is the same as being moral.

The character of Edward Ferrars in Sense and Sensibility

In Sense and Sensibility, Edward Ferrars who falls in love with Elinor is one of the major characters. Because Elinor's family thought that Edward's personality was similar to the hostile Fanny, it was expected that they would not welcome him. Upon his arrival at Elinor's house, however, we are surprised to learn that Edward's is quite different from Fanny. Based on his behavior and what he says in the movie, we will analyze four major aspects of his character; shyness, modesty, thoughtfulness, and a sense of humor.

Edward shows his shyness and modesty when he first arrives at Elinor's house. When he enters the room, he does not open the door fully and looks around for a while before entering. Then he walks into the room and says hello to everybody politely. While Fanny is holding up her head, Edward's eyes do not look directly at Elinor's family and he even stands with a humble kind of bow. His actions indicate that not only he is very shy but also that he is polite to everybody regardless of their status.

We could find another characteristic, thoughtfulness, from what he decides about Margaret's room and what he says about her mistake. Even though Fanny, taking Margaret's room to give Edward a better view, shows her anger at Margaret's disappearance, Edward shows understanding of the children's shyness by explaining his own shyness toward strangers. Also, he refuses to use Margaret's room after he recognized what was going on. His understanding about Margaret's behavior and deciding not to take Margaret's room, indicates his thoughtfulness.

Buy cheap sense and sensibility term paper

Not only is he thoughtful but he has a sense of humor. His sense of humor can be seen in the scene with Margaret. When Margaret is showing her anger by hiding under the table reading her atlas, Edward coaxes her out from under the table by stimulating her interest in maps and travel. Soon, they become good friends as they play fencing together. In addition to using his sense of humor with Margaret, he sooths the children's anger with his wit. From this fact, we could learn another aspect of him, which is a sense of humor.

Edward Ferrars is a pretty complex person; he is naturally shy, humble, and, thoughtful. In addition to that, his sense of humor complements his other characteristics. These aspects of his character not only allow him to understand other's feelings well but also change other's attitude. Therefore, in Sense and Sensibility, Edward is described as a nice man who can develop a good relationship with Elinor's family.

There are six particular barriers to communication between people. These are anxiety, assuming similarities instead of difference, ethnocentrism, language problems, prejudice and stereotyping, and misinterpretation of nonverbals. According to LaRay M. Barna (17), the developer of the list of six barriers, actual difficulties are mostly related to people with different cultures.

The first barrier going to be discussed is high anxiety. The meaning of it is when a person feels inconvenient when he or she does not know how to behave in some situations. The result is that the communication transaction fails.

Along with my personal experience troubles occurred when I came to the Swiss Hotel Management School for the first time. Everything was new and very unusual for me. For the first week I could never understand what people expected from me. The style of living was absolutely dissimilar, that is why sometimes I did not how to behave.

The next barrier to intercultural communication is assuming similarity instead of dissimilarity. When people are acting in a home manner in the different culture it might cause a lot of problems. In order to prepare yourself for various circumstances it is very important to assume laws, habits, and attitudes of another society.

Order College Papers on The Six Barriers to Intercultural Communication

For example, in Russia there is no such a thing as a ground floor. It starts directly from the first one. Some time ago in the age of seven I went to England, not having enough information about its customs and traditions at all. Thus I was totally lost in that system.

Ethnocentrism is a third issue on the barrier list. It is based on the idea that your own race, nation, or group is better than any other. Usually ethnocentrism is common for people who come across the "culture shock". During the period of time when an individual is learning the new culture he might find this novel worst than his home culture.

Taking as an example the Swiss Hotel Management School students. Some of them, especially students from Middle East, find Switzerland as a really "cold" country. The reason for this is that in Arabic countries people used to express them self in a very emotional manner. The result is that Middle East students are behaving very arrogant with the citizens of Switzerland.

The fourth barrier is the language problems. According to Jandt (000) the definition of language is the set of symbols shared by a community to communicate meanings and experiences.

There are five actual factors that generally produce the difficulties in the translation. They are lack of equivalences in vocabulary, idioms, grammar and syntax, experiences, and concepts.

Indonesian students are having a lot of inconveniences with studying foreign languages for the reason that in Indonesian language there is no gender rules. That is very complicated for them to understand why for example the French word "une table" is feminine.

Talking about nonverbal misinterpretations as another barrier to communication, it can be stated that in a conversation this is more problematical to understand the nonverbal symbols without sharing the same nonverbal codes.

There are more than a few types of nonverbal interaction proxemics, kinesics, chronemics, paralanguage, olfactics, clothing appearance, haptics, oculesics, etc. All of them are very different in every culture.

As an example, in a society where people don't kiss when they greet each other, a kissing person might be judged as a vulgar and without manners.

The last barrier is going to be discussed is about two destructive terms stereotypes and prejudices. Both of them are to make a judgment about individuals according to group membership.

Stereotypes are the perceptions about that certain people have particular qualities or abilities because they belong to a particular race, sex, or social class. They can be positive and negative. Usually they are based on half-truths.

Positive examples of stereotyping are Japanese people are good in mathematical sciences; French are the gods in the kitchen. Negative Russians Mafia Vodka Prostitution Cold winter; the Arabs are terrorists.

Prejudice can be defined as an unreasonable dislike and distrust of people who are different from you in some way, especially because of their race, sex, religion, etc. For instance, talking about Indian people in Arabic countries, it can be affirmed that Indians do get less salary than other nationalities. The reason for this is that Middle Eastern people are sure that the Indian race does not deserve something more, because it is Indian.

My personal opinion is that it is unachievable to behave in an appropriate way for every single society. However, wariness, particular knowledge and modesty in discovering a new culture can help in overcoming all the six barriers to intercultural communication.

Please note that this sample paper on The Six Barriers to Intercultural Communication is for your review only. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on The Six Barriers to Intercultural Communication, we are here to assist you. A Woman Is Not A Potted Plant

"A Woman Is Not A Potted Plant" by Alice Walker exemplifies the anger that she has about being a kept woman or homemaker. The very fact that the first two lines are in capital letters signifies that she is shouting out her statement to get the attention of her readers. Having knowledge of some of her history it is easy to see why this headstrong woman chose these words to express her inner feelings. She married a lawyer and became pregnant while attending college. Alice Walker's husband wanted her to be a homemaker, which could be the influence for this poem. Her roots bound to the confine of her house, assimilates the image of a potted plant and creates a vivid picture of a confined small clay circle being rooted in one place. Women are not like that according to Walker, to be taken care of is something that Ms. Walker does not concede to. The constraint of the size of the pot does to the plant what the house does to the woman. The interpretation that can be perceived is to say that just like a plant she needs to spread out to her growth potential or she will eventually be cease to exist from her own confinement.

Then with a pause the introduction to the next stanza is the statement "a woman is not a potted plant" is repeated to reemphasize that point. In this stanza she says that a woman's "leaves" are not "trimmed to the contours of her sex" (lines 8-10). She can be trying to convey the message that saying her physical shape does not have to be any certain way for her to be a beautiful woman. She uses the metaphor of a plant to explain the nature of a real woman. Although it may also be perceived that potted plants do have an aura about them of natural beauty and magnificence they still cannot exist by themselves and independence is the direction of this poem. She is saying that women cannot be bound to any certain thing or by anything. They are not in need of someone to

Take care of them despite what someone may have told them or what some men think. Write my Essay on Awoman is not a potted plantAlice Walker for me

The third stanza is introduced again with the same statement of "a woman is not a potted plant". Three is the magic number for remembering and the emphasis on hearing that statement the third time I envisioned a potted holiday flower. In all it's beauty it is intended to bring someone happiness, usually for a short time. When it's all used up it, the plant gets tossed and replaced like most women do. This poem is still making me feel the anger from the writer. Most women are beautiful just because they are women. Walker goes on to use the metaphor of a fence instead of directly retelling the details, which permits a safe measure of distance, yet the ability to retell precise feelings

Using the word espaliered seemed to represent the training of a woman to her race, country, motherhood, and husband (lines 15-1). The inclusion of "her man" in that list is powerful, because women are very often labeled by whom they are married to like Ms. Walker who identified with being married to a lawyer of a different race. Trying possibly to attain a higher level of respect from the one she grew up with. Women themselves sometimes use their husband or boyfriend to define who they are as a person. She chooses words that leads you to believe that women, should not be labeled or controlled by their husbands as they so often are or allow themselves to be.

The next stanza "her trained blossom"(line 0) can be interperated as her life's experience of what to do and when to do it. Even though it is apparent that Ms. Walker is conveying why a woman should not be an house slave or a mans toy. Setting herself free she has learned a sense of why she is acting out and looking for attention , it problably was her upbringing .

The statement that a woman is "wilderness unbound" puts women places women almost above men in the whole scheme of the world (line 0-1). This is a characteristic possessed only by women, because no one would ever venture to say that men are wilderness unbound. Women tend to be associated with the Mother Nature image and Walker is saying that this is a good thing. "Holding the future between each breath"(line 1-) again she herself as the center of things to come, woman that is. So up on that throne should she be placed for the sake of procreation. She is not here to be molded into someone's likes or needs. Men according to Walker, do not have that magnificence that women possess and no one knows quite where it comes from, but most people, including Alice Walker, know it is there. This poem describes the beauty that a confident and unbound woman possesses.

Most importantly a woman in the final two lines is not here just to be cultivated for her physical beauty to enhanse her man, like the honeysuckle embelishes the landscape. Nor is she here to be drained of her nectar of life in the sake of procreation.

The 4 Characteristics of Successful People

Think of a successful person you admire.

Have you ever wondered what it is that makes them so successful? They probably have 4 distinct traits...

1. They have bags of OOMPH!

People who succeed have lots of energy. They rise early in the morning and go through their day absolutely focused on what they are doing, and find the same high level of energy for their family, their friendships and enjoying their other interests.

They seem to have a zest for life, and a quality of energy that allows them to fully embrace life's joys and challenges.

What is clear is that they somehow manage stress. They may create stress for themselves, always constantly moving forward, overcoming setbacks, solving problems and encountering more and more. Nevertheless, they seem to be able to cope well.

How do you manage your stress?

. They have a positive attitude

We all have a little voice in our head, chattering away all day.

This 'self-talk', our dominant thoughts, tends to create our reality. We are attracted subconsciously to events and activities which reinforce these thoughts. Have you seriously considered buying a particular model of car … and then for a couple of weeks it seems that almost every car on the road is the model you're thinking about buying? Psychologists call this process 'Gestalt'.

Which is why successful people use phrases like 'I can' and 'I will'. They think about what they want, they are optimistic, dynamic and solution-oriented.

However, the vast majority of people spend lots of time thinking about what they don't want they complain and find excuses for why something won't or didn't work. They have a tendency to get stuck in ruts 'If only I had a better job/a different partner/a better car/more money'.

Is your glass half-full or half-empty?

. They can break out of self-limiting beliefs

Success seems to mean reaching a plateau and then reaching a new one. Nobody gets instant success, and people who 'make it' know that they need to strive, to keep pushing to new heights.

We all have limiting beliefs about what we can achieve or influence. It seems to me that as we age, we collect 'the luggage of life'. All our experiences, the expectations of others, all the praise and comments made in passing this is all packed into our personal luggage of life.

I'm sure you know several people who are weighed down by their luggage, who seem to limit themselves in so many ways. To succeed we have to push on to experience new opportunities, to look beyond our current realities.

To succeed we have to break out of our comfort zones and move beyond our limiting self-beliefs. Aerodynamically, a bumble bee should not be able to fly bumble bees don't know this, and so carry on flying. I suspect the Wright Brothers had quite a bit of bumble bee attitude too.

The secret to breaking out of limiting self-beliefs is simple we must set goals. Goals are the cornerstone of success. Without goals we stand still and decay.

Is your luggage of life limiting you? What are your goals?

4. They might just be using their brains differently

In 181 two American scientists, Roger Sperry and Robert Ornstein, won the Nobel Prize for research that had taken them 5 years. Their work led to the understanding that the two hemispheres (left and right) of the brain had different characteristics and functions and handled mental activity quite differently.

Our 'left-brain' looks after logic, lists, words, numbers, sequences and analysis. Whereas our 'right-brain' works with rhythm, colour, imagination, music, daydreaming and intuition.

And here's the important bit Ormstein found that people who had been specifically trained to use one hemisphere were almost unable to use the other. He also found that once the weak hemisphere was put to work in co-operation with the dominant side there was a substantial improvement in overall performance and ability.

Investigations into the life of Leonardo de Vinci, one of the most exceptional minds ever, suggest the necessity of using both brains to achieve outstanding performance. He excelled in mathematical and logical thinking whilst also being a genius with colour, rhythm and expression. He created blueprints for the helicopter and submarine hundreds of years before their time, and his perfect anatomical drawings of birds in flight illustrate the power of his awesome imagination.

Indeed, Einstein once said 'Imagination is more important than knowledge'. Without imagining bright futures and solutions to our challenges there is no future, only a grinding continuation of the present reality. We need both the dreamers and the schemers.

Perhaps the most exciting thing about all of this is that, whilst we might assume that most of us are left-brain dominant (especially business people), no matter how one-sided our brains may be, we need only exercise the weaker part to become proficient with both and transform our performance. We need not be either artistic or scientific we can be both.

How much of your right brain are you using?

And here's the best news … almost anyone can learn and apply these 4 characteristics to build a truly successful life.

Including you.

Module A

1)After looking at different definitions I think this one is the best. Management is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling the use of resources to accomplish performance goals. Organization is a collection of people working together in a division of labor to achieve a common purpose (Schermerhorn 00).

)There are three different levels of management. The highest level of management is the top level. The purpose of the top level of management is to determine the broad objectives and procedures necessary to meet the goals established by the board of directors. The top level consists of presidents, executive vice-presidents, and senior vice-presidents. The second level of management is the middle management. This level is responsible for developing operational plans and procedures to implement the broader ones conceived by the top management. This level consists of vice-presidents, directors, and superintendents. The lowest level is operating management. It includes managers, section chiefs, and general supervisors. Operational managers are mostly concerned with putting into action operational plans devised by middle managers (Wells, 1).

)There are five different functions of management. They include planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling. Planning is the process of setting objectives and determining what should be done to accomplish them. Organizing is the process of arranging people and resources to work toward a common purpose. Staffing involves stationing people to work in the position provided for by the organizational structure. Directing is the assignment of different jobs and instructing workers on what should be done. Controlling is the process of measuring performance and taking action to ensure desired results (Schermerhorn 00).

4)The principles of organization planning that are significant to the air carriers are Unity of Objectives which says that each unit of the company no matter how small must contribute to the accomplishment of goals. Span of Control states that a supervisor can only effectively supervise so many workers before an additional supervisor is needed. Departmentalization is dividing people and functions into groups this will allow them to specialize. Delegation of Authority is allowing people that are capable at the lower end to make certain decisions. Clearly defined duties states that each job should be clearly defined so that it does not overlap with any other jobs. Flexibility is what allows the companies to survive during the changing times. The company must be able to adapt internally and externally. Communication states that there should be a two way flow of communication between the top management and rest of the organization. This flow must be uninterrupted (Wells, 1).

5)Line and Staff organizations are two ways that an organization labels their authority structure. In the line organization the orders come straight from the top down to the people that need to accomplish certain tasks. While in a Staff organization the orders don't flow in a straight line from the top. Although in a staff organization the workers do report to a specific person they may also perform work for people above or below them.

Jim Jones - Indiana to California

In 147, Jim Jones was a boy of 16. Unlike most boys his age Jones was not interested in her peers or what was going on at his high school. Instead, he focused more on his studies and his desires to preach. During this time it is frequently noted that Jones had a strange interest in Adolph Hitler and Josef Stalin.

Jones graduated from high school and began his college career eventually earning a degree in education. On July 1, 14, at the age of 18, he married Marceline Baldwin. But from early on it seems that the Jones' marriage was destined for troubles. Jim Jones was often jealous, insecure, and domineering to his wife. Marceline, however, had been taught that marriage was for life and chose to stay with Jim even those his tantrums often annoyed her.

During this time Jones began to doubt his belief in god. He denounced churches for hypocrisy because they turned away parishioners based on skin color. In 15, Jones became engrossed in the Methodist church because of their interests in the rights of minorities. He became a student pastor at the Methodist church that year.

Jones began his forays into the African American communities, he often brought his young cousin who lived with him and Marceline. Soon he left the Methodist church and began his own. Without financial backing he had to turn to many means to raise money including selling monkeys for $. In 156, he began calling his church The People's Temple. Jones has often been called a rariety of the 150s because he taught integration and equality in a time of segregation. He was also an advocate for adoption. Marceline and Jim adopted a black child and a Korean orphan in addition to their own son.

In 165, Jones and 140 members of The People's Temple moved to Ukiah, California. As the story goes Jones greatly feared a coming nuclear holocaust and he had read in Esquire magazine that Ukiah was the safest area should a nuclear attack occur. After the move to California it became evident to Jones' family that he was heavily involved in drugs and frequently had sex with women other than his wife. Yet, Jones was gaining powerful friends. He had an alliance with the local leader of the John Birch Society. In 168, The People's Temple became part of the Disciples of Christ. It is said that Jones did this to gain access to their more than 1 million reputable members. Jones continued his contacts with many politicians perhaps to increase his own reputation. This along with a newsletter and radio broadcasts eventually led the church to grow to have 570 members.

Jones' relationship with politicians also allowed for him to make a great deal of money which he "unselfishly" gave to charities. But now Jones was an advocate of socialism and teaching the church's children that capitalism were evil. In reality, The People's Temple was not at all egalitarian. Jones placed other white people in places of power leaving the blacks to do the dirty work. He had his followers refer to his as "Father."

Analysis Erikson - Identity vs. Role Confusion (1 -0)

In analyzing Jim Jones' adolescence and early adulthood I used Erikson's Identity vs. Role Confusion stage. I believe Erikson would say that Jones lacked a clear identity. He had no peer groups. His role models were Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin, two of the early twentieth centuries most notorious men. Jones also had his father, a Klansmen. It seems Jones did his best to establish his identity by modeling his father. However, he did not do so in a traditional. Instead he gave off the illusion that he was trying to be the exact opposite of his father. Instead of hating blacks he seemed to embrace them.

I think Erikson might say that Jones never found out who he truly was and did not establish social or vocational identities that were true to his idea of self and he remained confused about the role he would play as an adult.

_____________________________________________________________________________

Analysis Erickson - Intimacy vs. Isolation (0-40)

I also looked at Jones later years in California through Erikson's stage of Intimacy vs. Isolation. While it may seem that Jones chose intimacy a more direct observation would probably reveal that he suffered from isolation. Jones often presented a domineering and jealous front to his wife. He also slept with various other sexual partners including men. Jones feared rejection and felt deeply rejected every time a parishioner left his congregation. It also seems Jones separated himself by placing himself above his followers by having them call him Father.

It is likely Erikson would have considered Jim Jones to have remained an isolation during this stage. I don't think he would have classified Jones as having formed a shared identity with another instead he would have believed Jones continued to fear intimacy and experience much lonliness.

"Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today." Those are the words of a young James Dean. Dean was a small town boy from Fairmount, Indiana, who loved fast cars and fine arts. Mildred Dean, James' mother, died when he was merely nine. Dean made many breakthroughs in the acting business. He took small town dreams and turned them into big city lights. He made all of this possible with his goals and dreams, Dean said, 'All the world is my stage and that is how I plan to live my life.' Though Dean made only three movies, he was showered with affection and loved by America. James Dean was perhaps the most influential star of his time, changing the entertainment industry with his carefree style and rebellious ways.

James Dean attended the University of California, Los Angeles where he met actor James Whitmore, and landed a small part in the television show, Hill Number One. After dropping out of school, Dean worked as a parking lot attendant in Los Angeles. Eventually, after landing small roles here and there, he left Hollywood. for New York. Once James was in New York, he soon landed a spot in the Actors Studio, run by Lee Stratsburg. He gained a small part in the Broadway play, See the Jaguar, and after that his career took off. He was offered a contract to Warner Brothers, and began filming East of Eden He won the Daniel Blum award for, best newcomer, for the play, The Immoralist . Dean loved anything that was fast, especially his cars. He was notorious for having the fastest, most dangerous cars around. In his spare time, he loved to race, and he drove to a race almost every weekend. He was always looking for an adrenaline rush, and the greatest, was the one he found in his racing. East of Eden was James Dean's most successful movie, by far. "Eden" brought more awards and nominations than Giant or Rebel without a Cause would combined.

East of Eden is the modern age story of the Biblical brothers, Cain and Abel. Dean plays Cal, symbolizing Cain, a son competing with his brother Aron, symbolizing Abel, for the affection of his father, Adam. "Eden" was released in 155; it was the only film to be released before Dean's death. This film was Jimmy's first major motion picture, and is remembered as the root of his success. This film was highly controversial and is said to have influenced many more films to be made soon after its release.

James Dean's second movie, Rebel without a Cause, was released very shortly after Dean's death and was regarded as a perfect depiction of James Dean's personality. Though East of Eden gave Jimmy his start, "Rebel" made him a star. In Rebel without a Cause, Dean plays a rebellious teenager who finds company in his friends, two social outcasts. Dean's character is on a seemingly endless search to find his place in an unaccepting society. This movie was an exceptional depiction of many teenagers today, and at the time of the film's release. "Rebel" changed the way the acting industry looked at their youth, by showing America what they didn't want to see. After it's release Julie Harris described Dean 'He's not our hero because he was perfect, but because he perfectly represented the damaged, but beautiful, soul of his time.' Help with essay on Life in the Fast Lane; The James Dean StoryDean's third and final movie, Giant, was, like his first two, a huge success. It was based on the book, by Edna Ferber. In Giant, Dean plays a ranch-hand who is in love with the ranch owner's wife. Dean says he chose this role because he has always been intrigued by the life of a cowboy. Eventually, as Lesley, the ranch owner's wife, gets to know Dean, she falls in love with him as well. Dean said that symbolized all of the temptations he could never gain. The fact that Giant was not as successful as his first two films doesn't mean Dean wasn't just as flawless and charismatic as he always was when he acted. The fact that two of Dean's three films were released after his death helped to ensure that his legacy would live on in many generations to come.

The day after the filming of Giant closed, Dean left Los Angeles in his Porsche Spyder 550 to head to one of the biggest racing events of the year. At the intersection of Routes forty-six and forty-one, near Cholane, California, Dean collided with another vehicle. When the authorities arrived, it was determined Dean died instantly. Jimmy was brought back to Fairmount and was buried in Park Cemetery. Now, forty years later, people still watch and adore James Dean. He was the new face of acting and will never be forgotten. There are countless fan clubs and groups devoted to Dean's life and there always will be. He was America's heartthrob, and, though he lived a short life, he lived it for all it had. Dean lived for the moment and never looked back, and those were the qualities that will keep his legacy alive forever. It was once said, regarding Dean's life, that "Writers were so consumed by his reckless lifestyle on the surface, that they missed, for whatever reason, his genius."

Who in the audience like good comedy/suspense movies?

I have always loved good comedy/suspense movies. And this is a good one. Foul Play is very funny, clean humor and suspenseful. I have yet to see a movie with a balance of such comedy, suspense and drama. Plus it has great actors like Chevy Chase, Goldie Hahn, Dudley Moore, and the loveable, Burgess Meredith. I would say Chevy Chases and Goldie Hahn's best movie, although, very few people know of this movie.

Once you see the lead in to the movie with Barry Manilow singing, " Ready To Take a Chance Again", and sweet and pretty Goldie Hawn driving south on Highway 1 to downtown… you are hooked. The view of the coast with the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge is so beautiful it will take your breath away. You have everything here in one movie- you have action, comedy, satire, thrills, car chases, and more.

Goldie Hawn is adorable, as Gloria Mundy, a lonely library worker who is caught between the opposing opinions of friends who think she should "take a chance," and "be more careful." Then while riding along the coast she stops to help a guy having trouble with his car, the suspense music and the fun starts. And the fun and funny keep up through the whole movie as Hawn stumbles into international intrigue and can't convince anybody to believe her.

Write my Essay on "Foul Play" My favorite Movie cheap

Chevy Chase plays a likable wise-guy police detective who is on suspension for hand-cuffing the mayor of San Francisco on a routine traffic stop. (Chase has to justify, so he claims the Mayor was wearing eye makeup.) Yet he ends up believing and helping Hawn. Not to mention falling in love with her. But then, who wouldn't?

Also great in this movie is Dudley Moore, who has some hilarious sequences as a visiting conductor of the San Francisco symphony. He plays a perverted loser who has a beaver trap apartment complete with piped in Bee Gees music. You'll never hear the song "Staying Alive" again, without remembering this scene and Dudley's hilarious revolution.

Personally, I thought the mix of laughs and danger were timed very well. You're on the edge of your seat with built up tension and then you release that tension with a lot of laughter. And did I laugh? Yes! This movie is totally hilarious with sidesplitting laughter, I laughed my butt off! Goldie Hawn was so funny and adorable and Chevy Chase was so funny and cute, they had great chemistry together.

Watch this movie and you'll be happy you did. Foul Play is well worth renting and watching. You will even want to watch it more than once. I loved it

Imagine two totally different images staring out at you, one in each hand. In your left hand, a country infected with the disease of modernity and self-image, crammed with towering blocks, or rather, steel studded coffins, as Tan Bee Kee writes in Cranes. This grave, like a grim, sinister cloud, spans nearly the entire expanse of land, having engulfed everything beneath it with its rules of conformity. Everywhere you look; nothing but the same dreary, gray, looming concrete giants stares out at you.

In the other hand, the exact opposite miles and miles picturesque green fields, leading into dense forests as far as the eye can see. Clumps of striking wildflowers hide within the tall grasses amidst the melody of bluebirds resonating among the trees. The occasional farmhouse, surrounded by flocks of sheep, being herded into their pens by the bounding sheepdogs. Endless white beaches, with the tranquil sound of the Atlantic waves crashing onto the shore…

Between the two, such vast contrast is seen. What other than this same amount of contrast is expected in the works of poets from these two extremes of their surroundings? However, what is it that brings about such differing pictures and the literary differences between a Singaporean poet's work and that of a British poet?

Firstly, Singapore is a well off country. Just as the image in your left hand shows, Singapore's already minute amount of land has been used up for such urban development. And since everywhere is more or less the same, it would be natural for the surroundings to be reflected in Singaporean poets works, through them writing about what they see everyday; the buildings and such. Proof of this is in the book No Other City the Ethos Anthology of Urban Poetry. Almost all of the poems there are related either directly or indirectly to the poets' everyday life. They write about the kiasu and showoff nature of most Singaporeans in Bigger, Newer, Better, and of the ever-ongoing construction works, in Nation-Building. In addition, there is a pitiful amount of views that can be used to inspire 'nature poetry'. The beaches are small, debris-strewn and made of low quality sand, witness to the equally polluted and dirty sea. What's left of any natural greenery are scattered sparsely over the island, and most of our greenery are neatly lined along roads or streets, oddly formal. Help with essay on Poetry in Nature vs. Urban PoetryBritain, on the other hand, is quite the opposite. It is not fully urbanized, and has a profusion of natural environments for the poets to draw infinite inspiration from. For example, the wife of Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, a celebrated poet herself, had loved the sea and spent much of her time gazing at the pristine waters while sitting by the coast. Eventually, this seascape provided the source for much of her later poetic imagery.

Another example would be that of William and Dorothy Wordsworth, poets and siblings. They had a special relationship with nature and with one another. Both of them utilized the beauty of their surroundings in their poems. William, aided by his sister, wrote poems on his travels on foot by place to place, reflecting the sights and sounds he encountered during his travels. This was especially true when he resided with his sister, and later his wife, at Grasmere in the lake country which provided much inspiration for his poem, Daffodils.

Secondly, Singapore is a young country and does not have a rich history. Therefore, poets tend to reflect about their surroundings and the future, as both they and Singapore has not experienced much in its limited history. Poems like Naming Parts of the CBD, Shenton Way 1 by Heng Siok Tian and A Prophecy Disclaimed, by Gui Wei Hsin, talk about how Singapore is an urban center and such. This is very much unlike Britain, which has a long winding history. Furthermore, most nature poets in Britain refer to the past to provide the contrast between past and present. William Wordsworth, had gone on a walking tour through revolutionary France, which was near Britain. He had seen how nature was 'distorted' through the acts of men destroying trees and constructing factories and buildings. Wordsworth was sad for Nature and lamented about the damage that was being done to it and how it was wrong and he longed for Nature in his poem The World is Too Much with Us.

It is true that Britain has an urban part to it. However, much unlike Singapore, it has a beautiful countryside to compare with. Also, the four seasons experienced by Britain affects the poets' work as well. In winter, where everything is covered in a pure blanket of snow, it is an experience to remember. This is yet another source for British poets to draw inspiration and motivation from.

With this, I quote Work In Progress by Felix Cheong, which truly instigates some thinking, about what we as a country have actually achieved.

why this upheaval

constant as our coastlines

eaten by tides,

the way streets and lands

are chewed and spat

between the pages of directories

Barbados was owned by the British during the 1600's. It was a British colony until internal autonomy was granted in 161. The country is still tied to the British monarch. The independence of Barbados was gained from British. on November 0th, 166. That date is also the independence celebration day for Barbados. Even though there are no accurate records to confirm the exact date of discovery of this small island. We know that it was named after a bearded fig tree.

Section Three.

The current leader of Barbados is Governor General Sir Clifford Straughn Husbands. He was born on August 5th, 16 in the parish of Saint Andrew. He is married to Ruby C.D. Parris. In London, he entered the Middle Temple and studied law and order. When he returned to Barbados around 160, he became assistant to the Attorney General and Legal Draftsman. In 167, he became the director of Public Prosecutions. In 168, He was admitted to be added to the Queen's Counsel. In 11, He honorably became the Justice of Appeal. Finally, June 1st, 16, he was sworn in as Governor General.

Section Four.

Barbados has respect for basic human rights. There are not many unusual rights. They pretty much have the same rights that we have here in the United States. They have the freedom of religion. Which is really rare in most small countries. The government does not have a law dealing with refugee as of this time. Citizens in Barbados have the right to change their government, like we do.

Children are provided education until the age of sixteen. The national health insurance program provides free medical and dental care for almost every situation. There are still problems with children being abused, but those problems are being resolved.

There is freedom of speech and press. Authorities do or are suppose to respect these rights to be practiced publicly. There are two daily newspapers that have government opinions. Barbados government does not restrict academic freedom.

Section Five.

I would have to heavily consider the decision of either living under this government or not. It's hard to just leave the state, but when you are under a whole new government and in a completely different atmosphere. It does get pretty intimidating. I love being at "home," and I love the way our government works. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like, if things in the United States were different.

I don't like the idea of having a queen be the head of state. I am also confused with their political parties. It seems to me that the Governor General and the President basically do the same thing. In both countries, you would have to be at least eighteen years old to cast a vote. It is a very small island, but they have a very demanding constitution. Their constitution is much like the one we have in the United States. Their government is just another form of democracy. www.yahoo.com

"The Road to College"

When you start your senior year of high school, you think it's going to be the greatest time of your life. You've waited thirteen years to get to this point and you're going to enjoy it to it's fullest. That's what I did. I took a bunch of the so-called "slacker classes" and then whatever else was required of me to take. I never really gave the idea of going to college much thought. I sometimes wondered what it would be like and who I would know, but I was really slow in the application process. I finally applied for Anoka-Ramsey Community College in the winter of 00, right before Christmas break (only because the Career Center teacher, Mrs. Erzberger, told me that would be the prime time for me to get my name on the list). I turned in my application to the counseling office secretary, Mrs. Roth, and off I went to my other classes for the day. This was just the beginning of my long road to college.

A month after I got back from Christmas break, I got my letter from ARCC saying, "Congratulations! You've been accepted to Anoka-Ramsey Community College. Please fill out the attached forms and send them to this address…". So, I gave the forms to my parents to look over and to fill out all the tax information. After they had sent in the forms, I got a letter back from Anoka-Ramsey saying that I had not filled out the correct information and needed to fill out another batch of forms. My parents were, nonetheless, opposed to filling out more forms. There were so many of them to fill out. This happened three consecutive times before the college O.K.'d me.

Then came the financial aid packets. I applied for a loan, since I didn't receive any grants or scholarships from my high school. This was also a long and drawn-out experience. It took four months for them to process my paperwork, which affirmed the approval of my subsidized federal loan. This type of loan doesn't actually pay for my college education, but allows me to defer my payments until six months after I graduate from college. In the end I figure I can pay off the loan myself, instead of my parents carrying the burden of another bill each month.

All right, now it's time for orientation! I didn't know anyone at orientation. I made friends though, or at least people I could talk to so I didn't feel so alone while touring the campus. I registered for classes, got my ID card, toured the school grounds, got the information I needed, and then went home feeling pretty okay about starting college. I was even feeling a little excited.

To my dismay, the first day of college was stressful. There were so many people around and I still didn't know quite where I was going yet. My classes were Speech, Math, and Business. I was so relieved when I found out that I knew people in my Speech and Business classes! A couple of people from my old high school were in my classes with me. I made a few friends in my some of my other classes that day to make sure I had someone to call in case I missed a day of class or needed information on what we did that day. I used to do this all the time when I first started high school. If I didn't know someone, I'd make myself get to know them! I'd introduce myself as, "hi, my name's Katie, what's yours". They'd first look at me funny, but then they would end up saying that they had felt the same way and were glad they now had someone to talk to in class. We exchanged phone numbers and e-mail addresses so we could keep in touch outside of school as well. Can't hurt, right? The more outside homework-help, the better!

The second day of class I had English and Math. My classes are spread out through the week, so I have Math every day, English twice a week, and Business and Speech three times a week. I set up my classes so I'm never in school later than one-o'clock. I arranged my class hours like this as to accommodate a more desirable work schedule. This way I can start work at two-o'clock and get out at six-o'clock. I then have the rest of the night to work on schoolwork, hang out with friends, or just relax and read a good book. I would recommend setting a comfortable work schedule for yourself your first year of college. It makes college homework a little more tolerable.

All in all, I'd say college is a great experience to go through (even when the process is somewhat prolonged). If you don't try it, you'll never know if you would've liked it or not. I know I only just started school two or three weeks ago, but from my observations it's a pretty cool place to be. The teachers are nice and very understanding (to an extent) and at least at my college, the campus is beautiful. We have a huge courtyard, a picnic area by the Mississippi River, a cafeteria with huge by windows, and very nice people that will help you whenever you have a question (any question). College is the place to be if you want to further your education and make great friends. High school has too many stereotypes and too many people to go along with them. At college, people see you for the real you and not that girl who threw-up all over the floor in the first grade. Whether you're planning on going to college or not, check some of them out and look into what they offer, you might just find something you're interested in. Who knows, you might even become a doctor someday.

The notion that modern art developed in multiple cultures and nations is one that needs to be further explored. The foundation of modern art contrasts the prevailing art history within it. The primary reason for this position was not racism or cultural ignorance, but rather total absorption with the prevailing art philosophy of the time- that art should ultimately serve a higher or absolute ideal. But to understand modern art it is not necessary to know its history, in fact, history gives no more meaning to its impression or beauty through the eyes of the observer. Therefore, there is no reason to look into the history of modern art nor any other pointless meanings.

On the other hand, we have modern literature. The idealistic nature and realism are not present to the oblivious mind. The symbolism and subtext of each unit or sentence is translated in many ways, the possibilities of its theme, topic, or desire are not directly stated within the realm of modern literature. Modern literature is in may ways much like the modern art. It works with experimentation, fragmentation, alienation, individualism, and distortion of society and humanity and deals face to face with reality and imagination of the daily human life. It often depicts all industrial societies and simultaneous views in the question of life and death.

"A Rose for Emily," encounters the moral dilemma of aging and prosperity to love. The idea of religion is lost, for "god is dead." If god is dead, there is no life, there is nothing to live for or dream of. The image of heaven after death, and eternal happiness was lost. Emily was a hometown city girl. Her father was a very important figure to the community and she was his prized possession. After his death, the city fell apart, and she continued to live where she had grown up. She later married a Yankee man, who she new she would be with all her life. The man was the opposite of her father, crude, insulting, and imperative to society and humanity around him. After her death, she was found out to have been sleeping every night with her dead husband.

Her alienation, isolation, individualism, and fragmentation of the South. She was alone most of her life, even when she did not realize it. The reality of death was not ever understood. She fell incompetent to society and her views were old fashioned and out of context to modern beliefs. Her isolation held her from the true reality of humanity and opportunities she could have been offered. Emily didn't have an individualistic nature. She was dependent on her father, and then when she had no one to ask for help, she lost her sanity. The south at this point was under defeat of the north. The ironic marriage between her and a Yankee was her weakness. According to The Best Short Stories of the Modern Age, "The little boys would follow in groups to hear him cuss the niggers, and the niggers singing in time to the rise and fill of picks" (6). Again irony is of question here. The North (Yankees) during this time of Civil War were fighting against racial discrimination of African-Americans in a sense, yet he is "cussing the niggers." The setting of the town that Emily lives in, is falling apart. The fragmentation of the South is common throughout modern literature because of (but not limited to) these reasons.Write my Essay on A Rose for Isolation for me

The use of symbolism and irony help convey these literary devises. For example the town in which Emily lives in, is actually a representation of the South. Her father represents the united Americas and one nation or one could argue that he represents god. Irony is used through Emily's and the Yankee's marriage. The author, William Faulkner, conveys descriptive language and original ideas of symbolism to allow the reader a better understanding of the fragmentation of the South during time.

The painting that reflects the mental picture in my mind is much like that in Van Gogh's "The Night Caf ." It resembles isolation and negative recognition, much like that of Emily. The colors are very much like that of Emily's house and life. Although not directly shown, it is dark outside. In particular, there is one older lady that is standing, as though she is lost, she just stands there with a blank look on her. The harsh, un natural light gleams throughout the room. Although there are other people in the room, there is no one there that recognizes her, or shows any emotion to her starry look.

This painting shows alienation through its single most noticeable subject the elderly lady. Although she is not placed in the center, she is not wearing an outstanding garment, or the largest object in the picture, there is something that catches your eye. Her lonely look and lost emotion give an isolated sense about her. Her image of loneliness also contrives a look of individualism to her ways of living.

The elderly woman in the art is very much like that of Emily when she has lost her father and her husband. She is lost and unable to find a way. She attempts to make things the same as before their death, but is failed by her death. The ironic nature of this unknown female is the center of attention, much like that of Emily. Emily is the talk of the town, the outcast, and the odd ling..

A Rose for Emily

The Author's Sympathy

In William Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily," the author uses sympathetic writing so a character can be viewed with deeper knowledge. The main character, Miss Emily, commits a horrible crime which isn't spotted until the end. Faulkner's storytelling prior to this creates a very sympathetic atmosphere for Miss Emily, and one can't help but feel sorry for her, despite the terrible offense that occurs. Miss Emily is described to be a helpless, broken-down woman whose life has been very hard.

To begin with, Faulkner explains that Miss Emily had been quite damaged by her father's strictness. He was very discriminative, and chased away every man that she ever had interest in. Faulkner includes this to show how lonely and sad Miss Emily had become when her father dies, because he was the only man in her life. She was obviously weakened from this, and being alone for the first time she decided to live in solitude. The reader gains understanding of Miss Emily through learning about where she lived as well. Living in Jefferson, Mississippi included many traditions for women to follow. Society expected her to make getting married a priority, something her father made hard to accomplish. Faulkner goes into depth about her isolation from the town, and how people think of her. They spread rumors, gossip, and whisper about Miss Emily which just makes her seem more of an outcast. The author does point out that they feel a great sense of sympathy for Miss Emily though, which adds to the reader's.

As the story progresses, the further we realize that Miss Emily has truly gone insane. She is just not thinking clearly anymore, and this is due much to her growing up. She doesn't understand the value of things, refuses to pay taxes, denies her father's death, and continues to let the house decay. Certain events in the story are told to make the reader feel more compassion for Miss Emily's behavior, even though they turn out to have much different truths. Firstly, when she buys rat poison for the druggist it at first seems to be for her own suicide. Following that we feel very sorry about the death of Homer Barron, who was Emily's last true love. It turns out in the end that the rat poison was actually used to kill Homer, so that he could be hers forever. This isn't apparent until the end, and up until then those devices were used to build up one's sympathy towards Miss Emily.

William Faulkner uses many different events and descriptions in the story to offer the reader a surplus of sorry feelings for Miss Emily. His main purpose in doing so was to provide a great shock value in the conclusion, and so one can realize just how mad she had become…
