The Fallen Messiah of Generation X

On April 5, 14, the lead singer and songwriter of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, silently placed the end barrell of a shotgun into his mouth and pulled the trigger. And so ended the life of so much promise. But why did it have to come to this? Perhaps the reasons will never be known, but there were a few things that haunted Cobain throughout his life that he just couldnt seem to get away from.

Cobains parents were seperated when he was nine years old, and according to friends and family, the divorce that would shortly follow thereafter proved itself to be somewhat of a turning point in the way Cobain viewed himself and others. Up until then, Kurt was a happy child who was full of smiles and who also was ready and willing to forgive anyone who hurt him. But that all changed in 176.

For the rest of his life, Cobain would never forgive his father, and in time he had a hard time forgetting about his problems.

In 181, Cobain recieved his first guitar on his fourteenth birthday. It was no secret that he liked music. He loved the Beatles and would sing a song whenever someone asked him to. He was already showing the signs of a talented youngster who held promise in music and writing. In 186 Kurt decided to start a band with his good friend, Krist Novoselic. They went through several different names before finally settling down with Nirvana. For a few years Kurt played at clubs, bars, and anywhere else that a gig was happening.

In 18, Nirvana had the opportunity to record an album. Kurt, Krist, and Jason Everman recorded Bleach in three days for a said amount of $600. Sub Pop backed the band up, along with other bands who were hoping to hit it big. But Kurt never wanted that. He wanted Nirvana to remain an underground band. Within two years Bleach had sold 5,000 copies, and by 11, Nirvana was ready to record another one. They initially signed with Sub Pop Records, but when Sonic Youth signed with Geffen, Kurt went ahead and done the same. On September 4, 11, Nevermind was released to music buyers all throughout the country.

The band had hoped to sell 50,000 copies at the most, but something went wrong. People who were, by that time, receptive to grunge music had found a band that were different from all the others that they had heard before. The song in question was, Smells Like Teen Spirit. MTV played the song continously and placed it on heavy rotation, ensuring national exposure. Nirvana was a band that was destined to be in the spotlight, but Cobain hated the idea of being interviewed by the press. He also hated the tour schedules that were placed on him.

1 was a year that would be remembered as the year that Nirvana really hit it big. But at the same time, Kurts drug addiction was becoming worse. Cobain had been addicted on Heroin since 10. He took it to relieve himself from his chronic stomach pains. It wasnt an excuse to take the drug it was just his answer to the pain. Only insiders knew about this, but the press was nosy. After Kurt overdosed, the press automatically assumed that Cobain was a junky, and labeled him as one. In March of 1, Kurt married his girlfriend, Courtney Love, who later would add more problems to the band than anyone could ever imagine.

In August of that same year, Frances Bean Cobain was born, but although the baby was perfectly healthy, the press printed an article in the tabloids accusing Courtney of taking Heroin during the pregnancy. The baby was thought to be born underweight and on the verge of death.

Although Cobain was facing problems left and right, Nirvana was still a band. In October 1, Geffen released Incesticide, a collection of rarities and BBC sessions that were never known to have existed. The record did not sell as good as expected. But it did prove to one and all that grunge and punk rock was around longer than most people had assumed. On the cover was artwork that Kurt had painted himself.

In early 1, it was clear that Nirvana needed to release another album. Fans wanted an album that was a carbon copy of Nevermind, but Kurt had a different idea about this. In April, the band went to work and recorded 15 tracks. Three songs were left out. In September of 1, In Utero was released. The record sold almost as much as Nevermind, but even though Nirvanas music had become better and more sophisticated, Kurt wanted out of the music industry. In November, Nirvana performed at the MTV Unplugged in New York. Fans noted that Cobain seemed to have come to terms with his depression, and it was reported that he was going to kick the Heroin habit for good.

In January 14, Nirvana set out on their pre-scheduled European tour. Despite Kurts weariness, the band played consistently well at each show. In an interview with Kurt on March 1st, the Nirvana frontman was quoted as saying that he was a lot happier than most people thought he was. But a few days later, the world leanred that this was not the case. On March 4, Kurt overdosed on powerful sedatives and champagne. He was rushed to the nearest hospital and lay in a coma for five days. Geffen denied that this was a suicide attempt. Kurt was released on March . What happened in the next few weeks has been disputed by someone and confirmed by others. WE do know that Kurt flew back to Seattle to rest. He also allowed himself to enter a rehab clinic. But he stayed there for only a few days before leaving. On April , Kurts mother filed a missing persons report with the Seattle Police Department and at the same time, Courtney Love hired a private investigator to try and find her husband. Kurt was missing, and the world feared the worst.

On the morning of April 8, 14, electrician Gary Smith found what he thought was a mannequin laying on the floor. But upon closer examination, he learned that this was a person. He immediately called a local radio station and then called the police. A few hours later, the coroner positively identified the man as Kurt Cobain. Suicide was listed as the cause of death. Appearently Kurt had finally put an end to all his pain and frustration. When he died, people the world over began to wonder how someone so young and talented could possibly want to destroy himself the way he did. The method that Kurt used was a shotgun. It was quick and painless, but the pain that suicide causes is very much real to those who survive. The only thing that we can do is appreciate his life and the music that he made. While we will never be able to ask Kurt why he did what he did, we can draw our own conclusions based on what had happened to him throughout his 7 years here on Earth. The legacy that he left behind will always be remembered. Kurt Cobain is gone, but he will forever live on in the hearts and minds of all who make up Generation X.

As an educator who is currently obtaining their Master's Degree in information technology, I'm a firm believer in the uses of multimedia in education. I use a considerable amount of multimedia on a daily basis with my students.

One of the greatest things about the use of multimedia is the fact that it helps students of all levels achieve a higher standard. Students can all design a PowerPoint presentation regardless of skill level. The beauty of multimedia such as PowerPoint is that students that need to be pushed can be by making their presentation more complex. They can add animated GIF's, add sound, or even add movie clips. These students could also utilize a scanner to transfer pictures from books to their presentation. Students who may have learning disabilities can still achieve the standard of completing a presentation but on a simpler form such as adding some text with a few JPEG pictures.

Another way multimedia can be used with teaching comes with the use the web in an inquiry based study known as a webquest. With a webquest, students research to answer a question by linking to various websites. In the end of their quest, students present their information through a PowerPoint, a play, a song, or some other way that they design. By doing this activity, multimedia is able to utilize the multiple intelligences that Howard Gardner identified in the 150's.

The one issue I find with multimedia and teaching is that teachers are not given enough in-service or training time in general when it comes to utilizing technology. Many teachers learn the needed information on their own but the vast majority of teachers need more time with training. In several of the articles I read while researching, "Multimedia Use in Education", studies were done that said the number one issue with incorporating multimedia in the classroom was teacher training.

With the majority of students having internet access at home, e-mail has become a wonderful tool for teachers. I am able to have students e-mail assignments to me at school even on the fifth grade level. Students are also able to access the class website to check on homework assignments and parents can check it for the weekly team newsletter.

Finally, teachers can utilize multimedia to help maintain their professional portfolio. I continually take digital photographs of students working and save the pictures to disk so that they can be utilized for my professional portfolio. By using digital photographing, I'm able to check if the picture is conveying what I would like right then and there and if need be, another picture can be taken.

As it can be seen, I am a huge fan of using multimedia in the field of teaching. In my opinion it is not the wave of the future but that of now!

SELF-ASSESSMENT

There comes a time where everyone needs to evaluate their skills and abilities. Finding out more about ones self helps a person better understand their strong points and their weaknesses. The main purpose of evaluating ourselves is to improve in what ever skills we are lacking in order to succeed. Success is not only necessary on the job, but it is essential for a day to day basis. In the self-assessment exercises we did in class I found out about my abilities, my competencies, my personality and the requirements for my success in the near future. Not only I got a glimpse of myself, but it was also very useful seeing what these personality traits were good for. I believe that a self-assessment is necessary for everyone no matter what is their occupation or age. It is useful in a way that it confirms what you already know about yourself.

This self-assessment helped me in a way that it confirmed already what I knew about myself. It was really functional and reliable, because it made sense.

Personality traits

I was satisfied with most of my results. I took the time to go through every exercise carefully. Starting with the first exercise I scored high on agreeableness, which is pretty good, because I tend to cooperate with others, analyze a situation or a problem and then give my opinion. This leaves room for everyone to give their opinion and share their concerns. I find this trait very helpful in situations where you have to work in a team.

My extraversion score was also high. I believe I'm a sociable, talkative and an assertive person. As for conscientiousness it described me as responsible, dependable, persistent and achievement oriented. I sometimes tend to assume too much responsibility!

I could describe my personality type as warm, sensitive, artistic, emotional, etc. Although I can't say that I was always warm with everyone like I am today, I guess it is something that maturity brought with itself. I always saw myself as someone with multiple talents or at least I like to think of myself as multitalented. I tend to engage myself in many things, because of my interests. I'm a curious person and I like to explore, taste and try new things, even though it is sometimes frustrating finding the time to devote myself to the things that I really love.

Master of my faith

I believe that my outcome and my future are all in my hands, because of free will, and liberty to live my life as it pleases me. I believe that every action has a consequence. Our bad decisions can harm us in the future just like our wise decisions will help us in the future. Every person is born with a conscience given by God, but it is up to each person to listen to his or her conscience. I do not believe in luck or things happening by chance. I believe that everything that happens; happens for a reason and that God in his heavenly wisdom does things in order to protect us from harmful situations that we cannot foretell or prevent ourselves.

Strong points

I got a moderate score on my self-monitoring exercise, which relates to the cues and hints people often give you with their facial expressions and body language. My adaptability to different situations is flexible and my behavior can change depending on the situation. I tend to be proactive, initiative and I take action where it needs to be taken. I identify opportunities, but I sometimes tend to take them lightly. I like to show initiative in order to demonstrate me seriousness to others. If things don't work for me I tend to find ways to make them work, but it is hard to find a solution for every problem. I think sometimes I stress too much on little things that have to changed, but sometimes it tends to create more problems.

I believe I'm suited to operate my own business, but it has to be something I enjoy so I would work hard at it and something I would be an expert. I could give people advice and be sure about myself and the advice I will be giving.

I believe I'm a creative person and I enjoy artistic work. I know that I can be a leader in an organization or work place, because people tend to perceive me as a trustworthy person. I can tell that once people get to know me they tend to have confidence in me and rely on me. At times I feel this pressure on my shoulders, because people tend to be very demanding. I tend to exercise a certain level of influence on people and I see myself as an innovator, because I'm open to new ideas and I do not like to follow others. I like to do things my way and understand things or analyze situations by taking my time and contemplate on them.

I like to achieve, set goals for myself and push myself to stay true to my commitments. Sometime they do burn me and push me to think about my activities, therefore I reflect on these situations, but I believe we can do everything moderately. Having goals are important for me, but achieving them while paying close attention to other things in my life is more important to me.

Ideal Job

The ideal job I envision for my future would be in a clean work place, where I would have contact with people. A job where I wake up and look forward to going to, something I could manage and give orders, have control and make all decisions. If ever I decide to operate my own business. I would like it to be something that would help out people, help the community and be friendly to the environment. Since I tend to be talkative and sociable I would like all my workers or co-workers to be comfortable with me and be happy with the services I provide. I believe in treating people with respect and being patient towards them. It is also important to give people a chance to prove themselves.

Weak Points

The first thing that comes to my mind is my anxiety. I'm always trying to do a lot in little time. This is very bad, because you loose track of time and it is frustrating when you don't get everything done. I feel rushed and people around me complain that I don't give them enough time. I often feel that I should be doing something and I believe it is a serious problem. I need to sit back and relax more often.

I tend to engage myself in my things at once, but deep down I know that if I decrease my activities and activities I would be able to concentrate more on each activity.

How I perceive people

I usually tend to be open with people and treat everyone equally, but there are exceptions. I perceive people as good natured and I'm willing to make an effort to get to know them and get along with them.

Final words

This exercise helped me confirm the things I already knew about myself, showed me new traits about my character and abilities, and elevated my confidence by assuring me that the Business Administration program is right for me.

I was satisfied with my results and I believe that I will continue to make an effort to succeed. I believe in myself and I know that I have a big task ahead of me. It all depends on the time and effort I put into achieving my goals. I also believe I'm not alone in this, but the Lord is constantly helping me.

After centuries of nearly universal implementation, the death penalty remains a deeply debated political issue. The death penalty is a necessary evil that has a positive effect on society today. It serves as an effective deterrent of crime as well as a safeguard for society. It also helps to keep order in our cities. Furthermore, I feel it is a just and effective punishment for those who have committed crimes heinous enough to deserve death. The death penalty is not a new idea in our world. Its origins date back over ,700 years to the Babylonian civilization, where it was prescribed for a variety of crimes. It was also greatly used in the Greek and Roman empires. It continued into England during the Middle Ages, and then to the American colonies where it exists still today. While one execution takes place, other murders occur, and the question still stands Will the death penalty safeguard society and deter murder, or will it not?

Capital punishment is a controversial issue because it is very difficult to determine who deserves the death penalty. The legal system closely evaluates offenders to determine who in fact deserves the death penalty. Even though there is always a chance that the person being executed could be innocent, it does not mean that the death penalty should be discontinued. Out of the 7,000 people that were executed between the years 100 and 185, only 5 (three and half percent of all executions) were later found to be innocent. Why should justice be prevented from being served if only a very small percentage was later found innocent? There is no legitimate reason why justice should not be acquired. The purpose of the judicial system is to obtain order and justice in our society. It is important that prosecutors should take time to make sure that there is no doubt whatsoever that the offender deserves death. The death penalty allows justice to be served and is only used in severe cases, usually involving murder or rape. There is an average of 0,000 murders a year and fewer than 00 convicted murders are later sentenced to death. Opponents argue that the residents on death row are singled out based on their ethnicity, culture or social background. Even though numbers show that the majority of the people sentenced to death are African-American, uneducated and usually poor, that does not necessarily prove that offenders sentenced to death row are singled out. Convictions are based on the severity crime. In fact, since the death penalty was reinstated in 176, 44 percent of the total offenders being executed were not a minority. Race nor ethnicity does not determine if one should die or not, but the severity of their crime is the determining factor. Currently 8 states enforce the death penalty. With the seriousness of the crime being the determining factor, it makes it easier for the judicial system to determine exactly who deserves the death penalty.

Capital punishment deters criminals. If offenders are aware of the fact that they could die if they committed the crime, it would in turn prevent crimes from occurring. Death is a threat. Statistics show that when a murder occurs, the majority of murderers do not want to die. If delinquents are aware of the consequences of their actions they would be compelled to think twice before committing the crime. John McAdams, a professor at Marquette University, states, If we execute murderers and there is in fact no deterrent effect, we have killed a bunch of murderers. If we fail to execute murderers, and doing so would in fact have deterred other murders, we have allowed the killing of a bunch of innocent victims. I would much rather risk the former. This, to me, is not a tough call. Opponents argue that the threat of dying does not prevent the act from happening because murder and crime rates are at an all-time high. Granted, that the death penalty has been used throughout history, no one is able to support or defend the fact that crime rates may stay the same or increase if the death penalty was not in effect. The fact the death penalty acts as a threat consequently prevents crimes from happening.

The death penalty averts the reoccurrence of another crimes. If offenders are put to death by capital punishment, they are unable to ever commit other violent acts. Of those arrested in 175 for murder, 85 percent had previously been arrested. The United States Department of Justice estimates that convicted killers on parole and probation commit 84,400 violent crimes a year, including 1,00 murders, 1,00 rapes and 4,500 robberies. Giving offenders the opportunity of escaping by locking them up, there is always a chance that another violent act could reoccur. Many escape from jail yearly. One escapee, Fred Kornahrens, was convicted of brutally murdering and raping a 6-year old girl. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Kornahrens secretly hid a piece of metal in his sleeves, used it to unlock his handcuffs and then escaped from jail. Kornahrens has yet to be found and is considered to be armed and dangerous. Another convicted offender, Donald Saffel, was serving a 0 to 75 year sentence for rape, burglary and robbery. Saffel is still at large today after he escaped on October 6, 000 from the Madison Correctional Facility. He escaped the maximum-security prison by snipping through two security fences with a pair of bolt cutters that they took from the prisons vocational shop. The judicial system is allowing serious offenders the chance of escaping by placing them in jail. If they are sentenced to jail, there is a chance that the convict could escape and another violent act could occur. If the offender is put to death, there is no possible chance that they could escape and commit another crime. The death penalty is used to prevent crimes because dead murderers cannot kill again.

It costs on average, $50,000 per inmate per year to house, feed, clothe, and provide medical and legal aid. Multiplied by 4,000 inmates on death row, and that's 0 million dollars per year. Multiply that by the fifty years that inmates are expected to live for, and the total comes out to being massive. The total costs of the chemicals used in lethal injection average around eighty dollars.

The death penalty is clearly the most effective, reasonable, and justifiable punishment for murder. The government should not be asked to resort to weaker punishment, especially in cases involving serious criminal acts. Murderers show no respect for the lives of others, and in return they do not deserve to be shown any degree of mercy from a strong, moral government. As a civilized society, we should allow the government to preserve justice. Maintaining and enforcing capital punishment is the best way to do so.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was born on the 7th March, 1886 in Aachen, Germany. Over the past century he proved himself to be one of the fathers of modern, architectural design. Throughout much of the 0th century Mies changed the face of architecture with his radical ideas and concepts that were years ahead of their time. He was able to challenge the boundaries of architecture and these timeless buildings are still today viewed as contemporary masterpieces. Through these works Mies has become the name behind innovative architecture and his legacy of 'less is more' was an integral facet of many of his designs. His works have been an inspiration for many other buildings around the world and they will continue to live on and inspire others for years to come.

Mies started his architectural career in Berlin, Germany where he studied under architect Bruno Paul and later on Peter Behrens. At this time Mies studied the architecture of mainly Frank Lloyd Wright which later provided great inspiration for his own works. The majority of van der Rohe's early career was spent in Berlin, until 11 when he opened his own firm. Later on Mies moved to America and became a citizen to escape Nazi Germany. Here his career really started to take off and he gained greater recognition for his works culminating at a peak with the construction of the Barcelona Pavillion.

Even from many of Mies's very first concepts, his designs were seen as extremely different from the norm, especially when compared to other architectural works of the same time period. His 'less is more' philosophy embedded himself as a breakthrough architect in the early 100's. This philosophy was clearly demonstrated in one of his most famous works, The Barcelona Pavilion (The German Pavilion). The ceremonial hall was constructed in 1 using the simple premise of a flat roof, supported by hidden columns and almost encased in glass. Van der Rohe was able to achieve an even, free flowing design throughout the building with its clean lines and open space that blurred the boundaries of the inside and the outside elements. His use of free standing walls and glass that could be moved meant that parts of the interior could be freely positioned to make space and let light flow evenly through the building. The lightness and movement that was able to be achieved was indescribable. The utilisation

Young Goodman Brown

The time era is approximately a generation after the time of the witch trials.

Goodman Brown, a young Puritan, is about to go on an evil errand. His wife Faith asks him not to go but after talking with her he goes off.

His journey leads him down a dreary road to the forest and he suspects behind every tree something evil. In the forest he meets a traveller with a snakelike staff who is the devil himself.

Then both went deeper into the wood. After awhile Goodman Brown doesn't want to go any further. He says that he comes from "a race of honest men and good Christians" and nobody of his ancestry has ever gone so deep into the forest. But the devil replies that he has already slashed a woman with his grandfather and set fire to an Indian village with his father. This shows that Brown doesn't come from "good Christians".

After this conversation they can see a female figure on the path. Goodman brown recognizes her as his former catechism teacher, Goody Cloyse. He can see Goody Cloyse talking with the devil. Brown is really confused about what he has just seen because he always thought that Goody Cloyse would go to heaven and she was still his moral and spiritual adviser. She appears to him as a witch. But now he saw her making deals with the devil. As Goodman Brown thinks about this his companion vanishes.

Brown applauses himself and thinks he can now meet the minister and the deacon Gookin with a clear conscience. As Goodman Brown is feeling good about not being tempted by the devil, he hears the minister and the deacon speaking. He hears that they both are going to a meeting in the wood and that a women will be taken to their community.

Brown then hears voices of people of his community. The sound of voices comes again and this time it is followed by a voice of a young woman. He fears that this may be his wife Faith. He starts to scream out her. Suddenly a pink ribbon is flying towards him. Just like this one Faith had in her hair at their parting. At this moment, he loses all faith. He starts to laugh insanely, driven crazy with despair.

Brown comes upon the ceremony place which is setup like a distorted Puritan temple. Now Brown starts to take notice of the faces he sees in the service and recognized them all, but he can't see Faith and hope is coming back to his heart. The ceremony begins with a cry Bring forth the converts!

Goodman Brown at this point seems to be in a trance and he loses control of his body as he is unconsciously entering this service.

The sermon leader then informs the crowd of the evil deeds of their leader. After the sermon, as the priest says that they should look at each other, Brown finds himself face to face with his wife. The leader begins up again declaring that "Evil is the nature of mankind". Then he baptizes the people. Goodman Brown cries that Faith should resist the wicked one and in the next moment he found himself alone. He can't tell whether this was just a dream or a real event.

When Goodman comes back he judges everyone instantly. He even takes a child away from Goody Cloyse who was teaching the child the catechism. As he met Faith who is overwhelmed with excitement to see him he just passes on without a greeting.

Brown emotionally excommunicated himself from his communion. He lives the rest of his life depressed because he thinks that he can't trust anybody in his communion. His life ends miserable because his utopia of a world without evil is destroyed. Brown was buried with no hopeful verse upon his tombstone; for his dying hour was gloom.

-This story is a criticism of the hypocrisy and the contradiction in the puritan society. The Puritans just looked at each other at face value. They try to keep to the strict rules of their society to make the others think that they are good Christians. Even though the minister and the deacon in the story are good people of the community they are sinners and evil. Just like Goody Cloyse who teaches the catechism on the one hand and takes part in a service for the devil on the other.

-Goodman Brown doesn't come to terms with the reality that people are imperfect. He has got an utopian image of society. This image was destroyed when he took part in the worship for the devil and saw all members of his community.

-He thinks that he is better than everyone else in the society and he just sees the faults of the others, so he even cannot stand to look at his wife. He judges the devil worshippers like the so-called witches were judged by his ancestors in the witch trials. This shows the intolerance towards those who differ from the puritan ideas.

-As Brown couldn't see his wife Faith among the devil worshippers, "hope came into his heart". This is the first time the word "hope" ever comes up in the story. If Faith wasn't there, as he had hoped, he would not have to live alone in his community of heathens, which he does not realize that he is already apart of.

He loses hope because he thinks that he can't trust anybody. There is even "no hopeful verse on his tombstone

-Goodman Brown questions his belief and that's why he wants to put it to the test. He goes on this evil errand to lose his insecurity.

As he meets the devil he is not sure about going with him because he has doubts about his faith.

As he meets those people in the wood who always seemed very religious to him those doubts came up again.

The word "good" in names comes up several times in the story.

Not only the man character Goodman Brown bears the name good in his name. You can also find the word "good" in Goody Cloyse and deacon Gookin (good kin)

This should point to their good character.

snakelike staff

The staff refers to the snake in the story of Adam and Eve. The snake tempted them to eat an apple from the Tree of Knowledge and so they were expelled from Paradise.

The staff leads Goodman Brown to the ceremony place where his image of a perfect society was destroyed.

He expelled himself from his community.

dew The dew on his cheek represents a tear that Brown is unable to produce because of his lack of emotion. This lack of emotion prevents him from feeling compassion for the weakness

Hawthorne shows that Brown has no compassion for the weaknesses he sees in others, no remorse for his own sin, and no sorrow for his loss of faith.

maple stick the point about a maple [stick] is that it rots from inside, out of sight.

You can compare it with the people of Brown's community. On the surface they look very pious but inside they are evil as everyone else

the ceremony the ceremony stands for all the evil deeds the people in the communion committed.

Brown could see everybody of the community there which shows that nobody is without a sin.

Im from Germany and I would like to apologize for the bad language and the mistakes.

The Horse Whisperer

Constructed from a blacksmiths story, Nicholas Evans creates a tale of torn soles and broken hearts that only faith in one man, The Horse Whisperer, can mend them both. The Horse Whisperer, published in 15, is a story about a girl who loses her best friend while at the same time is in the mist of losing her only companion, and a mother, like any mother, struggles to put her daughters life back together again. Based on fiction, this story could actually take place today or any other time, in anyones life. Going through financial hardship, Nicholas Evans finds a light at the end of the tunnel when he publishes and sales over 15 million copies worldwide.

Nicholas Evans was born in Worcestershire, England. As a child he spent his time watching American westerns on TV, riding horses, and reading Jack London books. He studied law at Oxford University and graduated with first class honors (Evans). He worked as a journalist for years before furthering his career as a TV films producer. During the 180s he produced TV documentaries about famous writer, painters and filmmakers. This is when he met David Lean, who became his friend and mentor. Lean persuaded him to switch, from his normal documentaries, to fiction. In 1 he met a blacksmith in the far south-west of England who told him about horse whisperers-people who have a gift of healing traumatized horses (Evans). This was to become his first novel.

Though the time is set in present day, the novel is not written on a specific event. Evans career as a journalist and screenwriter was sputtering and, although he had produced a documentary about director David Lean, his own directing deal had fallen apart (Literati). This inspired him to write the novel, hoping to his own financial hardships. Between Holly Wood producers and know publishers, Evans earned $8 million, bringing more hope into his own life. This also encouraged him to write other novels, The Loop and The Smoke Jumper.

The story begins on a cold, snowy, New York City morning. Grace, the storys main character, and her friend are horseback riding in the snow when one of the horses slips in front of a log truck. Graces friend and horse are both killed instantly. Graces horse is also involved but survives. Although the horse and Grace survive, the horse is traumatized and seems to never be the same again. The mother, Annie, fears Grace will never be the same if her horse, Pilgrim, is not cured of this terrible accident. Annie travels across the country to seek help from Tom Booker, the horse whisperer. Doing this, Annie has put every thing in her life, including her marriage, in jeopardy.

Nicholas Evans captures our hearts as well as our souls with a story derived from a blacksmiths story and the motivation of personal hardship in a time of life we have experienced or someday will have the pleasure of experiencing. It is a stirring elegy to the power of belief and self-discovery, to hopes lost and found again (Evans).

Celtic Tiger or Irish Terrier

Irish history is difficult to look at objectively because so often Irish history is presented having an agenda from one interest group or another. For this reason there are many myths and legends that have entered into Irish history. This fact causes problems for how Ireland's history is interpreted and used. For instant, many important people and events are left out of Irish history, while other events are published by the Irish government to help promote tourism. When studying Irish history it is a good idea to first look at the fact that there are many opposing views depending on how you look at Irish history. It is important to understand this fact for understanding Irish history. Two authors' writings were presented to us to help us understand this idea. In his book The Irish Story, R F Foster discusses this fact in a chapter titled "Theme-parks and Histories." Brian Walker also takes a look at this fact in a chapter titled "The Use and Abuse of History in Ireland Today" from his book named Dancing to History's Tune. In this essay I will examine the similarities and differences of the essays written by Walker and Foster.

Both authors recognize that many important events having been disregarded from Irish history. Coincidentally Walker and Foster use the example of WWI. The Irish soldiers that fought along side the British in WWI have been forgotten by Ireland because of what was happening in Ireland during the time of the war. The Easter Raising of 116 is the main historical moment that stands out in Irish history during that time period, pulling away the attention that may have been given to Irish WWI veterans. There is no holiday for the Irish WWI veterans. It was not that the veterans were looked down on for fighting in the war, they were just forgotten.

The next thing that I noticed about the Foster's and Walker's text was that Foster's views and even topics in the book seemed to be focused on the Republic of Ireland, while Walker's viewpoints was were more based on the North of Ireland. Foster is discussing the policies the Republic's government put into place to use history for the benefit of tourism in Ireland. Foster used the example of the 150th commemoration of the Irish famine. The government wanted American tourists, and it had a good plan to get them to come. During the summers of 15, 16, and 17 a famine theme park was open in west Limerick. This was to attract the ancestors of the Irish Diaspora to come spend money in Ireland. The Irish government was not the first or will not be the last to exploit history for monetary reasons. Foster does a good job explaining that during 150th commemoration of the Irish famine other important dates in Irish history came and went with little or no commemoration. The 150th anniversary of both Thomas Davis's and Daniel O'Connell's death came and passed quietly in Ireland. Both of these men had been instrumental in organizing movements against British rule in Ireland during the 180s and 1840s. Yet because they lack the popularity of Michael Collins or the tourist attraction of the commemoration of the famine, both men have faded into Irish history.

Walker's chapter looks more at how the different sides in the troubles used history to support their beliefs. I did a little research on Walker and found out that he is the Director of the Institute of Irish Studies, at the Queen's University of Belfast. This would imply that he probably would be interested in the parts of Irish history that have lead to the troubles. And his chapter makes this quite clear. He starts off his chapter by using a couple of interesting quotes. He quotes Dermot Bolger when he wrote "we must go back three centuries to explain any fight outside a chip shop." I understand the exaggeration Bolger is trying to make, but in the Republic few people would take history that far back because it is mostly Catholics who live there. But in the North it could be said that a fight between a Protestant and a Catholic could not have been avoided because the fighting has been going on for over three centuries. Right here was when I began to suspect that Walker had lived in the North. His writing is very political, and there is nothing wrong with that. However, he makes it sound like all of Ireland is focused on the troubles in the North. This is not the case, and I think he could have done a better job explaining that.

Walker then shows more of his personal views when he talks about how the Irish continually blaming their present problems on past history. Walker wrote "The excuse of history can be used to diminish a sense of responsibility and initiative from the individual." In many cases I think this is true. A lot of people on both sides would say that they joined the IRA or the Loyalist movement because of the history of both organizations. However, I think a lot of the problems in the North of Ireland over the last forty years steamed from current problems, not past history. The handling of the hunger strikers by Margaret Thatcher was a definitive point that angered many Irish people, and the IRA. This was probably a large cause for many of the IRA's bombing during 180s. Bishop Thomas O'Fiach, the head Irish bishop in the 170s, angered a lot of people, especially Protestants, during the 170s. He did this because he supported the IRA, even though he was a Catholic priest. He was a huge reasons for a lot of the troubles in the 170s' and on. I used these two examples to show that the troubles in the North were caused as much by present problems, as past history.

Another interesting point made by Foster was the issue of Celtic Ireland. He brings up briefly the term Celtic when he mentions the "short-lived Celtworld Mythology Center." He quickly glances over this, but Foster is aware that Celtic Ireland is kind of a myth in history as well. It is interesting that the park had both the word Celt and myth in it's name. Many people look at Ireland ancient past and just think Celtic, however Irish culture is a blend of a lot more culture than just Celts.

Both Foster and Walker brought up facts about how the Irish view their own history. They looked at important facts that had been forgotten or changed as the history of Ireland was used. Foster focused on how the government used history to promote tourism, while Walker looked at how groups like the IRA used history to endorse their ideology. I think Foster was right on most of his points. The Irish government have at times exploited their own history to encourage tourism. As I said earlier a lot of other countries have done the same. Yet Ireland's history maybe a little easier to modify because Ireland has only been some what independent for less than a century. There are a lot of beliefs about the early politics that have been changed around. The political history was more of Walker's focus. He showed Ireland as a country in a state of conflict because of their past, differences on ideologies, and the different religions in the North. Walker is right about a lot of this. The IRA and he Loyalist do have much different views on history. However, I think Walker dwells on the troubles to much. Ireland has a lot of other history as well. While both authors made good points, I preferred Foster's chapter.

Young people today have a lot of stress to cope with. Families, friends, studies, health, finances. When they do get some time to relax and have fun, they want to enjoy themselves to the max. They may find themselves at the receiving end of advice from friends and acquaintances offering a quick fix to help them have more fun. And when they see everyone else using drugs and apparently having fun they don't want to feel left out, their inherent curiosity leads them on to discover what all the fuss is about.

There are many young people who can try it once, and feeling that nothing much was gained, walk away and never look back. But there are others, probably the ones lacking in confidence or suffering from low self-esteem, who feel good when they take drugs, they like the buzz, the high they get, and they want to continue feeling good. So they keep on taking the drugs, not knowing what side effects they may have, or what effects can be expected long term. And if they get addicted, they won't care anyway, they'll keep on taking more and more just to feel good.

Their friends will become alienated because the drug user undergoes a change of personality. They become bad tempered and irritable; suffer from mood swings; lose concentration, interest and enthusiasm in life; withdraw from hobbies and sports; lose pride in their appearance and will make unusual and repeated requests for money (it's an expensive habit.)

Physical signs of drug addiction include sudden weight loss, occasional memory loss, slurred speech, lack of energy, disturbed sleep patterns, chronic coughing, poor coordination, red or watery eyes, dilated or pin-point eye pupils, loss of appetite but craving sweets. (All in all, a total wreck.)

Cheap Custom Essays on Effect of Drugs

Here's a run down of the more widely used drugs.

AMPHETAMINES these are stimulants, they speed up the central nervous system.

Slang names speed, bennies, gooey, uppers, pep pills.

Effects small doses give feelings of well being, self-confidence, energy, loss of appetite and alertness. Higher doses make the above feelings more intense, also give headaches, sweating, dizziness, rapid or irregular heartbeats, can also produce feelings of aggression or hostility.

Overdose brings on brain haemorrhage, heart attack, coma, death. Most deaths are due to accidents while under the influence of speed.

BENZODIAZEPINES minor tranquillisers, they slow down physical, mental and emotional responses. Combining them with alcohol, painkillers, or antihistamines can result in unconsciousness and failure to breathe.

Slang names tranks, downers.

Effects relieve anxiety, depression, insomnia. Higher doses give feelings of euphoria and dizziness, no feelings of worry, fear, hunger or cold. Dependence happens in 4-6 weeks.

Overdose brings on convulsions, breathing problems, coma and death.

CANNABIS also known as marijuana, pot, grass, dope, mull, yundi.

Usually smoked in water pipes or rolled into cigarettes. Can also be cooked in foods and eaten.

Effects small doses produce feelings of wellbeing, users laugh and talk more, feel happy and relaxed. Higher doses can distort time/colours/sounds and feelings of anxiety, excitement, confusion may increase. Long term effects include loss of energy, lack of interest in activities, loss of memory and concentration, risk of psychotic behaviour. It also impairs driving ability.

ECSTASY is a hallucinogen. Small tablets taken orally. Used at all night rave parties to give energy to dance all night.

Slang names E's, eckies, XTC, MDMA.

Effects gives energy and freedom from hunger. Increased doses produce hallucinations, blurred vision, irrational behaviour, convulsions, vomiting. It has a hangover effect including loss of appetite, insomnia, depression, muscle aches, loss of concentration. Higher doses can produce severe hallucinations and irrational behaviour which is dangerous to the user and to others.

Overdose produces very high bloodpressure, fast heart beat, high body temperature. It can produce severe reactions; deaths have occurred in Australia, USA, UK, mainly associated with overheating and dehydration.

COCAINE - is a stimulant. It directly affects the central nervous system by speeding up the activity of certain pathways in the brain.

Slang names coke, C, crack, snow, nose candy, blow, toot, the lady.

Effects Snorting cocaine can lead to nosebleeds, sinusitis and tearing of the nasal wall. Smoking free base cocaine (e.g. crack) can cause breathing difficulties, a chronic cough, chest pain and lung damage. Injecting cocaine with used or dirty equipment, such as needles, increases the risk of becoming infected with HIV, hepatitis B and C, blood poisoning and skin abscesses. Long-term injection of cocaine can result in blockage of blood vessels that can lead to major damage to body organs; inflamed blood vessels; and abscesses.

Overdose As little as 10mg (about one-tenth of the dose users commonly inhale) has been known to kill individuals. Can produce the following effects faster, irregular heartbeats; lung failure; heart failure; and burst blood vessels in the brain.

HEROIN is a strong painkiller and highly addictive. It is injected or smoked.

Slang names horse, smack, stuff, dragon, H, junk

Effects hepatitis, ulcers, abscesses, loss of sex drive, tetanus, infertility, pneumonia, malnutrition, bronchitis, tooth decay, collapsed veins, overdose, brain damage, and AIDS. Employers have the right to sack a person caught using drugs at work or convicted of a drug charge.

Overdose causes severe breathing problems and coma. Unless medical help is obtained quickly, the breathing rate will continue to fall until it stops altogether and the person dies.

There is one form of substance abuse that is not treated as seriously as the drugs mentioned above, yet it kills more young people than any of them

ALCOHOL this is a depressant because it slows down parts of the brain and the nervous system.

Slang names booze, grog

Effects combining alcohol with other drugs can be dangerous. Mixing over-the-counter or prescribed medications with alcohol can reduce their effectiveness. Mixing alcohol with minor tranquillisers or marijuana can affect judgement and coordination and even cause breathing failure. Immediate effects include feeling relaxed and less inhibited, followed by reduced concentration, slurred speech and blurred vision. It also affects coordination and judgement and aggressive behaviour. An unpleasant effect of heavy drinking is a hangover. Symptoms include headache, nausea, shakiness and possibly vomiting. Sobering up takes time. Black coffee, cold showers, exercise, or vomiting does not speed it up. Physical problems include liver damage, heart and blood disorders, stomach inflammation and brain damage. Impotence and menstrual irregularity can also occur. Emotional problems can include depression or relationship and family problems. Poor work performance, financial difficulties and legal problems may be some of the social problems experienced at times.

Overdose Severe overdose may result in stupor or coma, with cold and clammy skin, low body temperature, depressed breathing, and increased heart rate. Death from suicides and accidents most typically result from overdose combinations of alcohol and sedatives.

How to be a Charismatic Leader

What do Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy, Charles Manson and David Kouresh all have in common? By definition, they were all charismatic leaders. Charisma is the result of specific behaviors on the part of the leaders, which leads followers to view them as charismatic. In essence, charismatic leaders have a powerful message, an arousing personality style and the needed interpersonal skills to make them a major force in effecting change. This paper will research the practice of charismatic leadership in the workplace.

Followers generally label their Charismatic leaders as one or more of the following types

•Omnipotent a nurturer acting as a parent that will nurture and guide followers.

•Mystical someone in touch with higher truths and knows the way and the answers.

•Heroic someone who can save the day.

•Value driven someone who is pure and empowering.

Murphy

Charismatic leaders instill the following beliefs in their supporters

•Trust in the correctness of the leaders believes.

•Affection for the leader - which makes them comply with the leader willingly.

•A feeling of an emotional involvement in the mission they are led to do.

Charismatic leaders have a tendency to look for the good in people and tend to be labeled as 'people builders'. They evoke a belief in a mission that followers have a strong personal belief in, thus providing them with a sense of purpose something that everyone needs. Charismatic managers also evoke a belief in their personnel, when people know that you believe in them, they can achieve greatness.

Charismatic leaders look for employee strengths and work around their weaknesses. It is not that they overlook weaknesses, charismatic leaders will not neglect unacceptable behaviors, however, they will concentrate on nurturing and building employee strengths. They also recognize accomplishment. Positive reinforcement in the form of recognition helps employees to know that the work they put forth is important and noticed.

Managers that practice charismatic leadership must recognize their personal responsibility as well. Abuse of the power that comes with this particular type of leadership can come about easily. History reveals that Adolph Hitler, David Kouresh, Charles Manson lead followers with a strong belief that was terribly immoral and unethical.

On December tenth 148 in the Palis de Chaillot in Paris, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The document is made up of thirty articles which deal with a series of basic human rights and duties. It follows the premise that

the declaration is a common standard of achievement for all peoples and nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the people of member states themselves and among the people of territories under their jurisdiction.[]

However this is not always the case, infraction to the human rights code are all too often practiced, today as much as 50 years ago. War crimes in the former Yugoslavia, terrorist acts in the Gaza strip, Political prisoners in China, the disappercidos of Chile and Argentina, female genital mutilation in orthodox Muslim communities are all too common. However the message this document stands for is one for the universality of man and woman kind alike. It tells of such basic rights as freedom and life that are owed to every human being regardless of the language she speaks. They are inalienable in the fact that human rights have no boundary and are sovereign to no king or state. Shue seems to disagree with this, since in describing the comparative advantage theory of government he mentions that each nations own government (or other social institutions) are best able to care for the welfare of the people of that nation...[6] This latest theory provides some backing for cultural soveirgnty, however it does so by demeaning the universality of human rights, and is therefore unacceptable with what Im choosing as a moral standpoint.

As I mentioned human rights start with the basics (freedom, life) and develop further into the right of peaceful assembly and the right to education. Perhaps the most obvious thing to be said about rights is that they are constitutive of the domain of entitlements. They help to define and serve to protect those things concerning which one can make a very special kind of claim - a claim of right. To claim or to acquire anything as a matter of right is crucially different from seeking or obtaining it as through grant or privilege, the receipt of a favor, or the presence of a permission. To have a right to something is, typically, to be entitled to receive or posses or enjoy it now, and to do so without securing the consent of another. As long as one has a right to anything, it is beyond the reach of another properly to withhold or deny it. In addition, to have a right is to be absolved from the obligation to weigh a variety of what would in other contexts be relevant considerations; it is to be entitled to the object of the right .... without anymore ado. To have a right to anything is, in short, to have a very strong moral or legal claim upon it. It is the strongest kind of claim that there is.[ pp48]

Do my essay on Human Rights CHEAP !

Cultural Rights Against Individual Rights

As explained above human rights are of an essential nature for the benefit of man and woman kind alike. It is on the base of this necessity that I consider cultural rights as an attack against human rights. Cultural rights have been proposed as a mean to the object of cultural preservation. It is questionable weather the preservation of culture for the benefit of the individual is more valuable than that individuals claim to his/her natural rights. Once again the argument of the right to exit comes up. If an individual has the option to leave than no injustice is forced upon him or her. This philosophy is erroneous on multiple levels. For starters if something is essentially wrong, and any action to violate natural rights is, then there can be no rationalizing it . Second, if the value of culture is as deep as cultural activists say it is (this I dont intend to argue) then it is obvious that to leave ones culture can be a devastating experience (this is the only point where my views are separate from Hartneys, he considers exit from a culture a relieving occurrence, I obviously disagree out of personal experience) . A cultural bond is often interlinked to family and friends and leaving the culture would provide freedom in a desert of social solitude. Further we must consider that around the world there are many society were the financial means of exit are not accessible to the majority of individual. And as a final critique of the afore mentioned theory there is the possibility of a lack of option or even knowledge . A person granted with the right to leave might not have any other culture or faith available to him/her to be adopted into, or the lack of knowledge prevents him/her from making an educated choice or in some cases from even knowing that his/her rights were being infringed upon.

After pointing out the necessity for cultural preservation and having exposed the inconsistency between cultural and human rights we must now decide if there is any way to mate the two such as to find an happy medium. One could forward the idea that human rights come in a certain order ant that is not coincidental that the basic natural rights come before ones right to culture and assembly. However this would be a low-grade simplistic approach. I prefer to tackle the problem drawing a parallel out of Hartneys theory.

He supports a theory of value-individualism where by all goods are good because they contribute to the well being of individual human beings. Further he states that If we assume that communities are valuable and ought to be protected, the next issue is weather this protection can, or should, take the form of rights. This issue involves two sets of distinctions between moral and legal rights ...(and) the debate about collective rights is flawed by a failure to discuss each kind of right separately. The second distinction is that between the conceptual question weather rights moral or legal can ever inhere in collectives, and the substantive question weather the protection of communities requires that they be endowed with rights. [10]

A legal rights implies that the law has forced a criteria to be followed, while a moral right implies that there is an individual good to be respected. The law has a tendency of dealing with groups as single entities, therefore any legal rights bestowed by a government onto a group would not be of a collective nature. Further all claims to any group moral rights that may seem to prevail over individual rights, when analyzed, boil down to a statement of individual rights, with the attempt of administering them via a group entity. Individual rights require governments to refrain from interfering in peoples lives, while group rights require them to provide services.[10]

In conclusion I would like to say there is no justification for moral rights to be granted to groups. However cultures are to preserved as a value for the individual, and if legal rights (the only type of rights available to groups) are to be granted to do so then provisions need to be taken to point out that legal rights as issuances of the government, cannot interfere with the greater cause of Human Rights.

In my opinion, the most important story from the New Testament that is essential to the religious message of Christianity is the story of Jesus' crucifixion and rising from the dead. My favorite interpretation is from the book of Mark, specifically from verses 15 and 16.

Honesty, I do not know of any other story that deals with the message Christianity teaches than this. Since I can ever remember, going to church, Sunday school, and all my life in a religious school, the message is you have to believe that Jesus was God's son who died on the cross for our sins and rose again on the third day. To prove this story is so important, take a look at two of the sacraments.

The first sacrament is baptism. When a person is baptized, they are washing their sins away, and entering into the Kingdom of God. They are taking part in the church militant, which is fighting the good fight for Jesus while they are still alive. When they die, they will be triumphant in their battle and will be with God in heaven.

The second and most important sacrament in this argument is the sacrament of Holy Communion. At the last supper, Jesus took the bread and broke it saying it was his body. He also took the wine and told the disciples that it was his blood and which was poured out for the forgiveness of sins. By him saying this, he knew he was sent there to die for the sins of the world. Now, every time we take communion, we remember the sacrifice that Jesus gave for us so our sins might be forgiven whenever we ask and to allow us to go to heaven.

Another example of this is when Jesus was hanging on the cross between the two criminals; with one knowing Jesus was innocent and asked of his forgiveness and to have mercy on him. Jesus did this and told the man he would be in paradise with him. This shows that Jesus will have mercy and forgive anyone who recognizes him and asks for it, no matter what the sin is.

This is the most comforting part about being a Christian, that no matter what sin I commit, I will always be forgiven as long as I have the faith.

The reason I chose the book of Mark for the interpretation of the crucifixion is based primarily on personal preference. I have read all of the interpretations, and feel the book of Mark is the easiest to read and understand, even though it might not be as greatly detailed as other books.

Introduction In this essay I will investigate the paths that a spiritual athlete has to follow to "win a gold medal" and what are exactly the four paths of Hinduism. So my question is What are the paths that an athlete can follow to concretize his aim?

The four paths of Hinduism are Blakh, karma, Jhana, and Yoga.

Blakh is a devotion to a personal God; it is the path of the Baghavad Gita. Karma is action; this means that every action of this life affects the next one. The third path is Jhana, it is the Knowledge and the understanding and finally the fourth path is Yoga, which represents self-control and meditation.

Like everything in life, these four paths have advantages and disadvantages. I am now going to introduce the advantages of these paths. In the path of Blakh, the advantages are that we are very close to god and therefore we have something to hold onto, and that it gives each part a focus in life. For the path pf karma, the positive aspects are that we can explain the pain and the suffering and that you can find a cause to everything that happens to you. With regard to the path of Jhana, you realize that material things are not important, it gives a deeper understanding of life, and you go beyond the superficial. Finally, for the path of Yoga, you learn how to meditate and to self-control yourself, that means that you can face any difficult situation without losing your coolness.

In the other side, these four paths also have disadvantages. For example for the path of Black, since you are very close to God you cannot sea the real world and you are isolated. For the path of karma, because you have many expectations of your next life you are disappointed by the fact that there is nothing left to discover in the outer world. The disadvantages for the path of Jhana are that it is a very difficult path to follow and therefore you need a teacher (a guru), and it demands commitment. Moreover, for this path you do not see the real world. As a final point, the disadvantages of the path of yoga are that you become selfish because you just focus on yourself.

To concretize your aim you might meet several problems because you are confused, you do not know what to do, but in the other hand, you might find that it is easier to follow the rules that decide for yourself. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to follow these rules due to a lack of unity in the religion community.

Conclusion My opinion is divided because I think it is always useful to have something that can help you to achieve your goal but it is also good to choose by yourself. Therefore, I think that to concretize your aim you should follow some of the paths of Hinduism but not totally; you should also think for yourself.

For example, it is better not to follow completely the path of the Blakh because to win a gold medal you have concurrent and you cannot be isolated. Alternatively, for the path of Yoga it is not a good thing to focus only on yourself because you can learn from the experiences of the others.

Is this battle over the Second Amendment rights driven by emotions or politics or both? Are we strengthening our freedoms or weakening them over issues such as this? The nd Amendment was published in the Bill of Rights in September 178. It expressly states, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

As you know, this is a very "hot" topic and has been for some time. Many people have interpreted this Amendment in many ways. They have made the claim that this is meant for military only, for people to protect themselves. It is difficult to figure out.

Many special interest groups are involved in the protection of this Amendment as well as the movement that seems to want dissolution of this Amendment. Groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA) and citizens from the Million Mom March (MMM) are some of these groups.

Although the amendment states that infringement will not happen, it seems it already does to an extent. The realm of laws concerning gun ownership is one of the most redundant and extraneous in our legal system. The Pro Gun Control groups like MMM and the Brady Campaign move for what seems like more legislation and gun control while the leading anti-gun control group, NRA fights for what they believe are citizen's rights in accordance with the Bill of Rights.

Who is right and who is wrong? I wish I had the answer. This is a very sensitive issue that dealing with the worst mixture of all…beauracracy and emotions. While researching this paper I came across articles, web sites, opinion polls and other information from both side of this article. It seems to me that the fight is different from both sides. The anti-gun control teams use the backbone of the United States to lay their framework. They constantly recite the Bill of Rights and US Constitution to support their beliefs. The pro-gun control groups rely more on emotions to drive their point home. Is there a right and wrong side? As with many debates, it is hard to justify either at this point. Other tough issues such as Abortion and Flag Burning stir the patriotism and feelings of many Americans. Emotions play a huge role in the decision making process.

The Gun Control movement began in 174 with the establishment of the National Council to Control Handguns (NCCH) by Dr. Mark Borinsky, a victim of gun violence. From there, this issue came to the forefront of the political hotbed. On March 0, 181 Jim Brady, press secretary to President Ronald Reagan, was shot and seriously wounded during an assassination attempt on the President. This sparked the start-up of the Center to Prevent Handgun Violence (CPHV), an educational outreach organization dedicated to reducing gun violence. Sarah Brady, wife of Jim Brady was later named Chair of the CPVH. She has been very productive while serving as Chair and obviously played a key-role in getting support for The Brady Bill, which requires a five-day waiting period and background checks on handgun purchases. President Clinton signed this bill into law after a seven-year battle. As with many interest group issues, these are driven by emotions. People lose a loved one or friend due to gun use and join the fight against guns.

The movement and strength for the pro-gun people is just as strong. The NRA is a very strong, deep-rooted, politically linked group. On November 17, 1871, William Conant Church and George Wood Wingate founded the NRA. Both were Union veterans of the Civil War and advocates of the right to bear arms. Today, the NRA is definitely supported by the Conservative, or right side of Government.

Recent evidence shows that they too are using an emotional agenda to get their point across now. Rather than continuing their one-dimensional outlook to quote the nd Amendment, they have moved for a more emotional stance. Their current campaign shows video clips of elderly women that have been attacked but because they were trained to use guns and had a weapon with them, they were able to fight-off their attackers. This message hits home as well. The NRA preaches safety, training and education as well as constitutional right. They know that the public wants to be safe and the first strike for pro gun control happened in 111 when New York State's Sullivan Law was enacted. This law imposed an exceedingly restrictive handgun-licensing scheme on New York City. The assassination attempt on New York Mayor William Gaynor is what prompted the law. The NRA acted out in an emotional outburst stating that their "Constitutional Right" to bear arms was being diverted.

Will this issue ever be settled? It is hard to say. Unfortunately, for groups that are trying to create greater gun control laws, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights guarantees the citizens of the United States of America the right to bear arms. Concerning the groups that are against gun control in whole, there will always be a fight against them because the wrong people will always use guns in the wrong way. This long-standing battle has gone on for many years and is expected to continue on for many more. As long as there are people using guns for the wrong reasons, there will be resistance for anti-gun lobbyists. The fact that emotions play such a huge role in this issue continues to add energy to it. It is hard to discount a personal testimony from a grieving mother that is detailing how her child was gunned down in cold blood. But it is also hard to rule against a right that has been engrained in our heritage as Americans.

It seems to me that there are countless gun laws that are not really being enforced. The argument to author and implement "new" laws seems very redundant to me. After looking at various laws that are active, it seems that our government needs to look at a better enforcement plan. The only way to curb violence with guns is to treat gun law violators with stricter sentences. It seems obvious to me. Take for instance the State of California and the Three-strikes Rule. Why not a "No-strikes Rule" or mandatory long prison terms for use of a gun during a crime? We have laws like that but the legal loopholes are many and in today's legal system, a drug dealer usually ends-up doing more time than an armed robbery suspect. It seems to me that the system needs to be smoothed over to ensure citizens benefit. The answers seem to be right in front of us but the value of the decisions that are being made is questionable. We spend millions of dollars attempting to persuade politicians to vote "our" way. The real question is what is right and what is wrong?

Emotions or politics, there is no correct answer.
