There are many important lessons learned when reading "The Chosen." I think that it teaches us that not much has changed over the years. The thing I think is most similar is how people stereotype other people. First impressions are important to a lot of people. Just because somebody belongs to a certain group, people automatically judge them. Weather it's based on race, religion, or social status, people always judge other people. Appearance is also important to a lot of people. People judge them by how they look. There are a lot of mean people that put labels on other people without first getting to know them.

First impressions are important to a lot of people. This is wrong, but a lot of people judge others by the way they first perceive them. They make assumptions and put them into different groups without first getting to know them. Reuven did this with Danny in the novel while they were at the softball game. Heassumed that Danny was a bad person because he always hit the ball back at the pitcher. He believed that Danny did this on purpose. Danny misled Reuven, but without talking to him to ascertain how he felt, he came across as a hateful person.

Appearance is another way that people stereotype other people. They wont talk to a person just because of how they look. If someone looks different, one can either go and talk to them, or just ignore them. Usually, it's the latter. Reuven shows us an example of this in the story. Danny tries to talk to him at the hospital, and he won't even talk to him. Just because he is a more devout Jew, with his fringes hanging from his pants, Reuven thought of him as arrogant and egotistical. He wouldn't even give Danny a chance to talk to him. Reuven thought that Danny was fake. He didn't think of Danny as one who would apologize. Later in the novel, he would find out that he was naïve for thinking this. Him and Danny would become good friends.

A way that the theme of stereotyping can be equated into our society today is in public schools. Everywhere you look you see sundry groups of students making fun of other students. Usually, they don't even know the person, or they just think that they are better than them. They have probably never or rarely talked to these people. Yet, they make fun of them because they are different. People get made fun of because they are different from everyone else. Wouldn't it make more sense for the different person to make fun of those other people because they're all the same?

Cheap Custom Essays on Lessons learned in "The Chosen"

In conclusion, all people stereotype someone, at sometime. Weather you know it or not, you probably have stereotyped someone at one point in your life. This is how the world has been running for years. There have always been different groups. In a sense, it is good though, because if everyone was in one big group where everyone had the same views, there would be no need for a lot of the programs and organizations that are in effect today.

PERSONS attempting to find a motive in this essay will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a meaning in it will be shot.

Many people believe that slavery is wrong, but during the time period from 1600 to 1865 slavery was considered morally and economically right by the South. The North on the other hand considered slavery immoral and not economically right. The difference in these views show up in how both sides made a living. The North was industrial and the South was agricultural. The South needed workers and if the work could be done for free this increased the profit on the plantations. The North had no need for slaves because the work was mainly based in factories and industries. Even though the North thought slavery was wrong, both sides thought that blacks were in many ways inferior to whites. The institution of slavery in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and in the time period from 1600 to 1865 was morally and from an economic standpoint right, but the relevance of slavery was beginning to change in the eyes of Huck and in the eyes of America.

There is one difference between a human and an animal. A human is the only animal that would enslave another animal. Negroes were considered animals and it is human nature to enslave another animal as property. This is what sets humans apart from animals. During this time period Negroes were no more than cattle. As cattle farmers need cattle today, plantations needed slaves then. This was the way of life for the South. This can be seen in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Phelps' and Miss Watson owned slaves and needed slaves to make a living. These people did not see anything

wrong with owning slaves. Miss Watson was even a religious woman living out her life in the ways of God and The Bible.Do my essay on slavery and the adventures of huckleberry finn CHEAP !

The Bible was a main cog in the machine that was slavery. The South believed that by going and getting Negroes from Africa that they were saving these Negroes' souls. They used the Bible to justify their actions. The Bible was used almost like a manifest destiny for slavery. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck was being pulled between his belief in The Bible and his friendship for Jim. He was willing to risk eternal hell for Jim, and was confused on whether to turn Jim in or help him escape. America was also confused during this time period, confused on the issues of slavery, which tore the nation apart.

Something extreme has to happen to alter someone's beliefs. Huck took an adventure and found a friend; America had a war but found the truth about slavery. Both Huck's beliefs and America's beliefs were found over time. One twelve-year-old boy found the truth about equality, racism, and slavery in a month that has taken American as a whole a hundred years to find.

Please note that this sample paper on slavery and the adventures of huckleberry finn is for your review only. The general psychological subject area of this study is social influence.

This can be defined as "the process by which an individual's attitudes, beliefs or behaviours are modified by the presence or actions of others" (Saks & Krupat 188).

There are several types of social influence but this piece of research will be investigating conformity in particular and, more specifically, gender.

Conformity is referred to as "a change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or imagined group pressure" (David Myers 1). Do my essay on Conformity in gender CHEAP !

Research into conformity dates as far back as 50 B.C. with Aristotle's writings on social influences and persuasion. However, experimental studies did not begin until the twentieth century with Floyd Allport (14).

Participants were required to judge the pleasantness of a set of odours, alone and then in small groups. Allport found that their judgements after the group discussion, approached the mean of their group and concluded that they conformed in attempt to be accepted by the others.

A study similar to that of Allport's and the basis for this research is that of Jenness' (1). Individual students were asked to estimate the number of beans in a bottle and then later placed in groups to discuss and come to a group conclusion. Jenness observed that when asked for a second judgement, participants made a distinct shift towards the group estimate.

Psychologists also believe that individual differences may play a role in conformity. Crutchfield's (155) study consisted of participants drawn mainly from the business sector and the military. They were tested for several qualities, some of which included intelligence, leadership ability and ego strength. He found that those who had scored highly in these, displayed lower levels of conformity.

Crutchfield's findings, therefore, seem to suggest that there is a conforming type of personality but there has been no substantial evidence to support this theory.

A meta-analysis of past studies into conformity carried out by Eagly & Carli (181) showed that women conformed more than men. It was suggested that these gender differences in conformity may have been as a result of typical social roles. Men are generally perceived to occupy positions of higher status and power and hence tend to be more exerting whereas women are seen to be more accepting (Eagly & Wood 185).

However, later research by Eagly (187) did not reflect similar findings to past experiments but rather seemed to show that there was in fact little significant difference in the rates of conformity in either gender. Researcher bias may have been introduced here due to the occurence of expectation effects whereby the researcher ( female) is deeply committed to acheiving a particular outcome and so could have affected the data by perhaps unconsciously leaving cues, thereby leading to extraneous variables. However, Eagly (187) discusses this sex of researchers' effect and concludes that it is not a robust one.

AIM

The aim of this work is to test if women show higher rates of conformity than men.

EXPERIMENTAL HYPOTHESIS

I believe that everyone should read these literatures.

All these reading materials have their own beauty and perceptive of life, where their authors gibe them a special intensity to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive styles. I have chosen to write about the increase in Alabamas white-tailed deer herd and the problems that relate to this explosion. Most people are unaware of the dangers caused by this. Unless you have been or know someone who has been involved in a accident involving a deer, the news of expanding whitetail numbers would seem a good thing. In 16 deer numbers were dangerously low due primarly to hunting, agriculturial methods, and loss of habitat. Since then the states population has risen to 1.8 million deer making it the second largest in the nation, with Texas leading. Public awareness, hunting regulations, management programs, and state parks have help guide the states deer herd back from the brink. This explosion has created a number of problems for the state. Law enforcement officials recorded 14,0 collisions involving vehicles and animals, with about 5% involving deer. These accidents produced 1,48 injuries and 14 deaths, amounting to 6 million dollars in claims to insurance problems.

This is not just a rural problem anymore. Now suburbs are experiencing problems with deer destroying costly landscaping problems, and generally over-running the the suburbs looking for food. With so many concentrated deer there is a possibility of a severe famine further pushing deer into urban areas. Deer carry ticks, which carry lyme disease, so more deer in suburban areas also could mean more exposure to the disease.

I chose this article because this problem will most likely be addressed by Alabamas department of wildlife & fisheries. One day I hope to be employed by this department so I may very well have a hand in how this predictament is handled. Untill now the legislature and hunters have been slow to address the problem. Up until a few years ago the shooting of does was illegal even though studies showed it was a viable way of addressing population problems. At the moment officials have their hands tied. One choice would be to employ the help of hunters to slow the growth in state parks where circumstances are much worse. However attempts at this have been hindered by ant-hunting groups. The department has made improvement by educating hunters and landowners about proper deer management. Hunter bag-limits have been dramatically increased. For example in some areas of the state a hunter can legally take as many as 4 deer during a 108 day season. But officials say even liberal limits would only maintain present numbers, not decrease them. Trapping and birth control has been suggested but both are very expensive and birth control results would be sporadic at best.

I think that despite this is a problem that needs to be taken seriously by all. Why is it that people only become concerned when its them or a loved one involved in a wreck. Some problems in society are more complicated than this one I know. But thats even more reason to place importance on this. The legislature needs to cooperate with wildlife officials and come up with a plan. With more public support and effort, this is a problem that can be solved. I hope it is done before too many more lives are wrecked.

Buddhist spirituality is the inner meaning of the human experience as shaped by the pursuit of transformation under the impact of the Buddha's Dhamma. There are two major branches of Buddhism's, Theravada and Mahayana. Theravada Buddhism is sometimes called "Southern Buddhism". This is identified as such because it is predominant in the countries of Southeast Asia. Theravadins believe that their tradition is the earliest and thus most authentic form of Buddhism. They preserve the closed scriptures and prefer to use Pali in their rituals and scholastics. Mahayana Buddhism is known as the "Northern Buddhism" since it prevails in many northern countries. They believe that their teachings are more profound since they go further back from the scriptures into oral traditions and teachings brought down through the generations. Thus, their sacred writings are vast and open-ended, tied closely to traditions and stories that convey their teachings.

Buddhist spirituality is formed by the Buddhist understanding of Nibbana, their growth through community, their pursuit of Nibbana through religious practice, and their formation through sacred literature. Gotama Buddha denied himself as that of a savior and more of a teacher of self-enlightenment. Gotama identified an intellectual problem of ignorance that compromises our innermost view of ourselves and everything around us. It teaches us to stop fabricating a lie about ourselves and to live how we were truly meant to live. The following of this ignorant path of self-denial will lead to mass suffering and self-destruction.

Buddhism is a non-theistic religion and the term Dhamma refers to the religious truth that leads to enlightenment. Although the saving goal of the Buddha's Dhamma transcends our immediate and sensory experience, its basic values are humanistic and easily identifiable in nature. The Buddha offered an analytical tool for self-assessment and wanted his followers to accept it only to see if it can actually validate its truth for themselves. The Mahayanist view of the Dhamma is that the expression of universal truth was a manifestation of Dhamma itself. Mahayanists trust their reincarnation into the "pure land" over which the Buddha presides over. This hope is to finally achieve ultimate salvation from the never-ending cycle of rebirth that the Hindu religion also emphasizes.

Buddhist spirituality is not a matter of static being but a process of becoming a being that can achieve a heightened consciousness. People must make pursuit of salvation for themselves and of others their first priority, and all must come second. Another thing about Buddhism is the absence of worship to a particular God to inherit the gift of peace. This is further affirmed by the Buddhist teachings that the only true leader is the person who practices their own salvation. Community is also an integral part of salvation as the teachings affirm that everyone belongs to one another and that we are all interconnected within a constantly flowing process. Gotama also goes to say that our present fortune results from what we have done in the past, while our present activity will produce what we shall be in the future.

The California Gold Rush

I reached my hand down and picked it up; it made my heart thump, for I was certain it was gold. The piece was about half the size and shape of a pea. Then I saw another(Marshall, James). A quote from James Marshall, who was the first man to spot gold, in addition he would clearly help change the nation forever.

On January 4, 1848, James Marshall was working for a man named John Sutter, when a shiny piece of metal caught his eye. Both men studied the shiny object and concluded that it was a piece of gold. Marshall and Sutter both were not happy about it. They decided to keep the discovery a secret, knowing that gold-seekers would bring competition. Not long after, the secret was out due to rumors. A man named Sam Brannan decided on his own, to give a helping hand by promoting the rumors. Brannan did so by running through the streets shouting about Marshall's accidental discovery. As he was doing so, he was holding up a bottle of gold dust. By doing this, Brannan became the richest person in California, for introducing the gold. He will always be remembered for sparking the rush and also be one of the many people to help change the nation forever.

During the year 184, gold fever ran through the people with avidity and obsession. Knowing that it would be a very hard and dangerous journey, people from various parts of the country came such as the Untied States, Canada, and Mexico. If you were fortunate enough not to die from cholera, exhaustion, and starvation, you would come to find out that the easiest gold had already been picked up. Even though the easiest gold was gone due to the greediness, the 4ers still continued to keep digging and working hard. Their hard labor eventually started to yield less and more less. This started to frustrate and depress them so rampantly. They eventually had to call it quiets. By 1850, the atmosphere of friendly camaraderie that was so prevalent two years earlier was all gone due to the obsession.

In the midst of the Gold Rush, there had been many changes and impacts on the Californian lifestyle. The most vivid alteration that occurred still lives on in California today, and is known as a place that accepts and nutures risk takers. By the early 1850's, most of the profound changes had already taken place. For example, a single miner could no longer work on his land alone. He then needed enormous amounts of help, so he evidently used technology. Even though a miner's way of living was distasteful, it was very necessary. Another change that occurred happened in between the 1850's and 1860's, when hydraulic mining became a major part of society. It was quiet clear that hydraulic mining was destroying the landscape. Nothing was being done to stop the destruction. California would soon understand the environmental changes that occurred during the Gold Rush era.

In summation,The California Gold Rush had not only changed the nation forever, but also brought a new way of living, along with a new and re-defined American dream. In addition, the Gold Rush brought enormous amounts of diversity and complexity. This would be known as the greatest finding in the west.

Race by the Numbers

In the essay Race by the Numbers, Orlando Patterson, claims that whites are going to remain the majority in the U.S.--because Hispanics are really white! Sounds a lot like Ellis Cose in his essay, The Colors of Race, "Today it is becoming increasingly harder to define what it means to be "white" in America…" It is a known fact that since the framers of the Constitution reached a compromise to count black slaves as three-fifths of a person; racial numbers have been about political power. In contemporary America, the distribution of political power on the basis of population, the use of race in the drawing of legislative districts and racial block voting have prompted people to inflate their numbers. Or at least fear their dilution. Pattersons essay addresses the political dynamics of racial quotas that have even noticed that Hispanics are eligible for preferences.

Since the census allocates political power as much as it sketches a portrait of the country, there is another abiding truth that flows out of the 000 census several civil rights groups are opposed allowing people to choose more than one race on the 000 census. The politics of racial numbers runs headlong into the desire of interracial couples to not have their children be forced to choose one race, the result was a Solomonic decision that gives a distorted picture of the nations racial landscape. Patterson responds in part to political lobbying by civil rights organizations, and for example people, who can be of any race, have scrambled the racial landscape.

He also challenges the way the country looks at race. For example, how should a people be counted? The way a government sees them or the way they see themselves? Many Hispanic people may describe themselves as white and are counted by the federal government as other than white. Patterson also argues that the gap between the number of people the government lists as a particular race and the number of people who think of themselves as being of that race not only adds to the confusion, but leaves the government figures open to legal challenge. The question that evolves out of this discussion is whether people should be classified with a particular group using the old criteria of skin color or language?

Custom Essays on Race by the Numbers

Patterson see the numbers, particularly the shrinking proportion of non-Hispanic whites fan the flames of racial hatred. Patterson's claims come about from influence on perceptions of who is white originates among the so-called Hispanics. For political and economic reasons, including the benefits of affirmative action programs, the leadership of many Hispanic groups pursues a liberal, coalition-based agenda with African-Americans and presses hard for a separate, unified Latino classification. This strategy is highly influential even though nearly half of Hispanics consider themselves white. For African-Americans, the nations major disadvantaged minority, these tendencies are problematic, although African-American leaders are too shortsighted to notice. Latino coalition strategies, by vastly increasing the number of people entitled to affirmative action, have been a major factor in the loss of political support for it

Brotherly Love as it Develops

William Shakespeare's comedic play As You Like It revolves around the love relationships that the characters are involved in. The witty humor often seems to be mocking plays of it's time as every character pairs with another to find love or reconcile a forgotten love. Oliver and his brother Orlando develop and illustrate the complexities of brotherly love from the introduction of Oliver's hatred for his brother to the end where he finds love for his brother once again.

As the play opens Oliver quickly becomes the antagonist of the play. The audience learns, from Orlando, of Oliver wrong-doings. They are sons of Sir Rowland de Bois but the relationship they have is initially not one of the conventional brotherly love. Oliver, the eldest son has taken the land left by his father but not taken the duties of caring for Orlando. As Orlando expresses, Oliver has "trained [Orlando] like a peasant obscuring and hiding from [him] all gentleman-like qualities" (I, i. 1601). There is irony present when Oliver describes Orlando because the depiction of a man "full of ambition, an envious emulator of every man's good parts, a secret and villainous contriver against me his natural brother" (I, i. 160) is a fair depiction of Oliver, himself.

Adam, a faithful servant, reveals to Orlando his brothers plot "to burn the lodging where [Orlando] use to lie, and within it. If he fail of that, he will have other means to cut you off" (II, iii. 1614). Orlando then decides to leave the land where he stays and go into the forest with Adam to escape his brother's murderous plot. Oliver is later asked by a Duke to seek out Orlando in the forest and "bring him, dead or living," (III, i. 164).

Bannigan

Oliver agrees replying "O that your highness knew my heart in this. I never loved my brother in my life."

In act four Oliver tells a story of a heroic rescue to Rosalind, Orlando's love interest. The story being told is the story of Orlando rescuing his eldest brother from death. Orlando had the opportunity to leave his brother to die "but kindness, nobler ever than revenge, and nature, stronger than his just occasion, made him give battle to the lioness," (IV, iii. 1646). Orlando disregarded the fact that his brother had a plot to kill him and saved him regardless, illustrating his unconditional brotherly love. When awaking to find his brother had defeated a lion to save him, Oliver then realized the love his brother commits to him and the love he has for his brother.

Although Oliver proclaims his hatred initially in the play, he finds love for his brother in the last acts. Their sibling relationship resembles relationships of normal siblings. At some point most siblings will have their arguments and hatred for each other but eventually their love will be expressed. Orlando and Oliver's love is very complex and may not be observed or expressed in the beginning but their brotherly love develops with time and maturity. Just as the brothers find love with Rosalind and Celia they also find their brotherly love for each other.

Trust is firm reliance on the integrity, ability, or character of a person or thing. Trust between people can be divided into three levels. The first level of trust is the kind that people trust each other under a specific situation. At the second level, people trust each other under similar situations. If trust is developed to the third level, people have complete trust in each other. In order to develop trust between people, certain conditions are required. We either wait for these conditions to meet or make effort to achieve the condition we want.

The first level can be developed between people easily. It happens all the time. For examples, I ask stranger for the time. He tells me the time, and I trust him on this issue. The situation is similar when people ask for direction, want to know which bus to take or to need someone to hold the camera. We can see from these examples that the thing concerned is not something that matters much. It does not require any professional knowledge or personal relation. This level of trust can happen between anyone, including strangers. Yet, there are a few things you can do to make it easier for you to gain other's trust. The first is your appearance. You should look neat and friendly. A smile always helps. The way you speak is important too. You should sound friendly and trustworthy. The last thing is your body gestures. Don't be aggressive.

The second level is common between people, but requires certain conditions to foster. This level of trust include patients' faith in doctors, victims' dependence on police, clients' confidence in lawyers and students' trust in teachers, i.e. trust in people's professions. This kind of trust can only develop when people meet the qualification. People have to prove that. That's why people have more faith in famous doctors and well-know lawyers. Vice president Clinton failed to maintain his professional ethic, thus lost trust from the ABA and his lawyer's license. This is a higher level of trust. The techniques used to develop the first level of trust will help, but they are not the key part. This time you need a reputation. You must find a way to make people believe in your ability. Don't hurry. People's faith in you will increase as your ability increases.

The third level is the highest level of trust and so demands many things. It comes from a long term non-conflicting relationship plus personal understanding. Your belief in your parents and some of your best friends is an example of trust at this level. It may take a long tine to someone. You find out that the person has a good personality later and he helps you a lot. You trust in him in the end. Usually people who are close to each other at this level, because they get more chances to know each other. Trust of this level is usually not necessary but beneficial. It can only be build up little by little and enhanced by the little actions, which create trust. Don't use eyewash. It may seem effective in the short term, but it will destroy the whole relationship in the long run.

Overall, it is easy to see that trust is actually based on what is known about the person. The more is known, the higher level of trust that can be built. You have to show that you are trustworthy before you are trusted.

Since I first learned about the Holocaust in fifth grade, I had always condemned Hitler's Germany and assumed a similar belief to that of the book, Ordinary Men by Christopher R. Browning. Browning used a lot of details, when describing and explaining various situations that took place during the Nazi rule in Germany. There was one primary question that Ordinary Men dealt with; were the average German soldiers and civilians responsible for the Holocaust?

Browning basically follows the German Reserve Battalion 101 from their formation in Hamburg, to the start of their killing of Jews, all the way to their final development as experienced killers. According to Browning, the average German did not willingly participate in the killing of Jews. Instead, he believes that due to peer pressure, the Germans followed blindly the orders of their leaders. His assumption as to why Germans did not try to stop the mass killing of the Jews was that they simply were unaware of what was happening to the Jews, either because of denial, or misinformation.

Browning makes it clear that the anti-Semitic propaganda, started by the Nazis in 1, intimidated the Germans from rebelling against the Nazi ideals, and thereby forcing them to take part in the killing of the Jews. I absolutely agree with the belief that propaganda was used to spread the Nazi message of hate and caused some Germans to do all they could to exterminate the Jews of Europe. The question at hand is, was the propaganda strong enough to have led so many Germans into such a killing frenzy? Personally, I dont believe that it could have been propaganda alone that was the cause of the mass killing of European Jews.

Many claim that the Germans were blindly following the orders of the Nazi regime. If this is so, one must assume that the responsibility of the mass killing of European Jews must fall on those who gave the orders, the Nazi leaders. This may be true, but only to some extent. Whenever or not the Nazi regime leaders gave orders to kill the Jews, it was still in the hands of small groups of German soldiers to decide for themselves whether to participate in these inhumane acts it was peer pressure that caused the Germans to do something they may have not wanted to do; taking part in the mass murder of Jews.

Browning describes the 'drunken games' each Nazi troop would play to alleviate the horror of what they were doing. He uses these examples to create a picture for the reader about how people are affected by peer pressure, and how they must still use certain methods to escape the horrific reality, which they have created for themselves. The way he describes these scenes is absolutely shocking and heartbreaking. The decisions that each man in the troop were expected to make are so foreign to our modern lifestyle. Nevertheless, as a reader, I could relate to the pressures that came to them from authority, and their peers.

In conclusion, Christopher Brownings Ordinary Men, argues that ultimately, it was group pressure and obedience to authority that made the men of Germany kill unarmed civilians. This book is an excellent read for both the casual reader and the history buff. It is a story of courage and cowardice, of guilt and amorality; one which no reader is likely to ever forget.

Volstead Act

Volstead Act

The Volstead Act of 11 was the law that made the sale of alcoholic beverages illegal, supporters of this act thought that this would make the country better as a whole. They said this law would lower crime rates and would increase the health of Americans. This law did the exact opposite of what they expected, overnight this law created a black market that lead to the rise of organized crime. The health of people who drank alcoholic beverages also decreased because there was no quality control in the illegal market. Thousands of Americans were poisoned by the impurities of the illegal Alcohol. These are just some of the reasons why I think that Prohibition was not the best law that we could have come up with. The new laws on alcohol are much better because they do not completely ban the sales of alcohol, they just limit who can buy it and when.

This is much better because the drinks are much safer, distilled properly and the percentage of alcoholic contend is controlled. Another reason why this law was not reasonable is because of the time period that it took place in, this was in the middle of the great depression and there could have been many more jobs if they did not ban the sales of alcohol. Prohibition was not a well thought out amendment and next time the people want to ban the sales of something they should consider what will happen after they do. A couple of good thing that ended up coming out of this was they set an age limit on the purchasing and drinking of alcohol, which probably is safer than if they just let people of all ages do it. They have also came up with many good laws for drinking and driving to make the roads safer, and they are starting to make the laws more strict than they already are. Prohibition did the exact opposite of what the people who supported it thought it would do and that is why it only lasted from 10-1.

This law manufactured bootleggers and many organized crime groups. Although it was not a good law it was probably good in the long run because maybe next time a group of people want to ban the sales of something they will think of the consequences of what will happen if they do.

Responding to Poetry

"Theme For English B" by Langston Hughes

1.) In the poem, Langston Hughes describes the piece's origin; Hughes was given a homework assignment by his college professor for English B. He describes the assignment and his response to it. The work was supposed to be a descriptive poem embodying the author. The work develops from confusing, to specific, to symbolic, to personal, to universal, then back to the addressing the assignment at hand. The poem takes own a natural progression of emotional involvement on behalf of the author.Do my essay on Responding to Poetry CHEAP !

.) A main theme presented it the work is racism. The author identifies himself as black and his professor as white. The assignment was to have the work "become you," and Hughes observes that the paper cannot be black, as he is. The work will start out as Hughes but then become a part of the professor as well when he reads it. So therefore, the poem itself cannot be identified by race as its author so often is. The author also suggests social segregation (due to race.) This is made obvious to the reader when Hughes states this about their integration through the poem "Sometimes perhaps you don't want to be apart of me. Nor do I often want to be apart of you." Hughes also brings up the point that his race makes him no different than any other.

.) "Sometimes perhaps you don't want to be apart of me. Nor do I often want to be apart of you."

This quote from the passage is an important part of the poem, and it brings about many different feelings, depending upon who is reading it. When I first read the part where Hughes say he does not want to be apart of the professor, he is not specifically referring to the professor, but to all white people. My first reaction is to be offended, however, in Hughes experience, I am sure that he has been stereotyped and put down by white people. Why would one want to be apart of that? As I explore the quote deeper, I begin to appreciate Hughes lack of stereotyping for his professor. He does not say that the professor will not want to be apart of Hughes because of their race, but instead his is passive, and more accurate in saying "Sometimes perhaps…

4.) In my Literature class in high school, I can recall reading this poem the first day of class, and my teacher telling us all to go home with the same assignment that Hughes was given. Other than the assignment being rather presumptuous for high school students to imitate Hughes' work, it was a good exercise for getting to know your fellow classmates. I remember trying to match the rhythm of my work to Hughes'. I would love to identify some major social significance to my work, but I can only recall stating that I was "born in a city of wind," referring, of course, to Chicago. The teacher loved my work and still uses it as an example for the assignment for her classes.

5.) The theme in the poem is reflected in the poem's assignment, the poem became apart of Hughes. He was able to open up his mind and let the reader in. He expressed himself. His views on racism, social segregation and stereotyping, and on America itself were strong and hopeful. He suggests that we are all apart of each other. We may ignore it or deny it, but we are the same.

On October 4, 157, history changed when the Soviet Union successfully launched Sputnik I, the world's first satellite. It is about the size of a basketball, weighed only 18 pounds, and took about 8 minutes to orbit the Earth. The launching of Sputnik has created new political, military, technological, and scientific developments. This first satellite has started the space age and the space race between United States and Soviet Union. This was the beginning of the understanding about the universe and the wonders outside of Earth. The space age is an important event in U.S. history that made U.S. strong and powerful as it is today.

When Sputnik I was launched on October 4, 157, and it caught the world's attention and the American public off-guard. The American people were probably still enjoying their bright sunny day when the Soviets launched this satellite. To some people it was amazing and to some others it was a thread because Russian can launch ballistic missiles that could carry nuclear weapons from Europe to the U.S. This shocking news has made America realize that they are behind and so they work hard to attain the level that the Russians are at. So then America starts to spend money in areas like science, math, and various subjects that has something to do with computers and technology.

The character of Edward Ferrars in Sense and Sensibility

In Sense and Sensibility, Edward Ferrars who falls in love with Elinor is one of the major characters. Because Elinor's family thought that Edward's personality was similar to the hostile Fanny, it was expected that they would not welcome him. Upon his arrival at Elinor's house, however, we are surprised to learn that Edward's is quite different from Fanny. Based on his behavior and what he says in the movie, we will analyze four major aspects of his character; shyness, modesty, thoughtfulness, and a sense of humor.

Edward shows his shyness and modesty when he first arrives at Elinor's house. When he enters the room, he does not open the door fully and looks around for a while before entering. Then he walks into the room and says hello to everybody politely. While Fanny is holding up her head, Edward's eyes do not look directly at Elinor's family and he even stands with a humble kind of bow. His actions indicate that not only he is very shy but also that he is polite to everybody regardless of their status.

We could find another characteristic, thoughtfulness, from what he decides about Margaret's room and what he says about her mistake. Even though Fanny, taking Margaret's room to give Edward a better view, shows her anger at Margaret's disappearance, Edward shows understanding of the children's shyness by explaining his own shyness toward strangers. Also, he refuses to use Margaret's room after he recognized what was going on. His understanding about Margaret's behavior and deciding not to take Margaret's room, indicates his thoughtfulness.

Not only is he thoughtful but he has a sense of humor. His sense of humor can be seen in the scene with Margaret. When Margaret is showing her anger by hiding under the table reading her atlas, Edward coaxes her out from under the table by stimulating her interest in maps and travel. Soon, they become good friends as they play fencing together. In addition to using his sense of humor with Margaret, he sooths the children's anger with his wit. From this fact, we could learn another aspect of him, which is a sense of humor.

Edward Ferrars is a pretty complex person; he is naturally shy, humble, and, thoughtful. In addition to that, his sense of humor complements his other characteristics. These aspects of his character not only allow him to understand other's feelings well but also change other's attitude. Therefore, in Sense and Sensibility, Edward is described as a nice man who can develop a good relationship with Elinor's family.
