I learned that no matter how badly I am playing, I must stay confident, for crying doesnt help anything. I know now that his criticisms were made so I could work on my weakness in my playing and get better. He was not out to get me, he was trying to help me improve. Though his personality was not very friendly, I learned that it was his natural disposition, and not an attempt to hurt me. After overcoming the fear of Mr. Toulson, I learned that I can do anything.
Another interesting experience that helped me gain confidence was my speech communications class with my professor, Mrs. Allison. I knew I didnt have any trouble with talking to a group of people. I love to tell jokes and stories to many people at one time, but I was nervous and somewhat embarrassed about preparing some boring speech and making everyone else suffer by listening to it. Mrs. Allison explained that we all have problems with this and that it can be overcome. I remember something simple she said that stuck in my mind The only way to get over the fear of something is to just do it. She was right. As I had to go up to give the speech, her words constantly kept running through my mind. After the speech, I realized that we were all in the same boat suffering from the same seasickness- nervousness, We all had to give speeches. No one was out to criticize anyone else and we all ended up supporting each other! I learned that I could make a boring speech interesting if I have fun with it and feel comfortable as the speaker of the moment.
Becoming a member of the Penn State Blue Band was the ultimate experience that gave me total confidence. The Blue Band has been rated as the #1 college or university marching band in the country; it has a very superior reputation. I had wanted to be a member of this band for quite some time. Last year I decided to try out, thinking I would probably not make it. I just gave it every bit of energy and talent I had during tryouts and I made it! Being chosen to be a member of the Blue Band has shown me that if I really want something and I work for it as hard as I can, I can do it.
