The Hidden Story in Green and White

Color symbolism is really popular in novels written during the 10's. One such example is Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. There is much color symbolism in this novel, but there are two main colors that stand out more than the others. The colors green and white influence the story greatly. Green shows many thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and choices that Gatsby has throughout the story. White represents the stereotypical façade that every character is hiding behind.

The color green, as it is used in the novel, symbolizes different choices the character, Gatsby, can make during his life. The green element in this novel is taken from the green light at the end of the dock near Daisy's house. The color itself represents serenity, as in everything is perfect. This warns Gatsby that he should not pursue his dream for getting Daisy back, because his chance has passed and everything is as it should be. This is shown with Nick's insight, "…His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him… (Pg.18)"

Another symbolization of the color green, which contradicts the first, is the meaning "go." As in a traffic light signal, most people associate green with the word and action "go." This can be interpreted as meaning Gatsby should go for his dream without hesitation. It implies that Gatsby and Daisy are meant to be together and nothing should stop Gatsby from his destined happiness and love with Daisy. It inspires hope for Gatsby that he is on the right path, heading towards the best years of his life. He believes that things will soon be as they once were, only better. ""I'm going to fix everything just the way they were before," he said nodding determinedly. "She'll see."(Pg. 117.)"

Cheap University Papers on The Great Gatsby Symbolism Essay

The last symbolization the color green has in this novel is an urge to strive ahead in life, to do better in life and succeed. Gatsby changes his entire persona for a better, more sociable, image and status. He is constantly striving to be a more successful figure in society. Ever since he was a boy he put himself on a schedule with hopes for becoming a highly respected, well-known person. "He knew he had a big future in front of him. (Pg. 181)," his dad says about him. "Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this…(Pg. 18)."

White is the other color symbolism interlaced into this novel. Where green only influenced one character, white has a wider range of influence on the characters. This color symbolizes one thing, a façade, but it appears in every character. For example, Daisy is always seen wearing white, which gives her and innocent naive appearance. It is as though she uses that as an excuse for when she does something ridiculous or childish, making it seem like she does not know any better. In reality, she knows exactly what she does but just doesn't care. She uses this little princess image and her money to hide her biased, snobbish, and conceited view of herself and her lifestyle. "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together…(Pg. 187-188)."

Another character that hides behind the white symbolic façade is Jordan Baker. She also wears white quite often. She acts as though she is superior to everyone around her. Her posture, her attitude, and even the things she says imply this arrogance. "She was extended full length at her end of the divan, completely motionless and with her chin raised a little as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall. If she saw me she me out of the corner of her eyes she gave no hint of it indeed I was almost surprised into murmuring an apology for having disturbed her by coming in. (Pg.1)." She portrays a bored and apathetic attitude about everything, which is part of her "I am too good for you" appearance. In reality, she just wants to be as respected and socially accepted as Gatsby. She is not willing to take responsibility for her actions and uses her image as a guard implying that she could not have possibly done anything immoral, much like Daisy. However, "She was incurably dishonest. She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage, and given this unwillingness I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep the cool insolent smile turned towards the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard jaunty body. (Pg. 6)."

Color symbolism is not very noticeable, yet it can tell a great deal about a story. In this case, the colors give the reader a look at the character's choices and the paths he or she could have chosen compared to the ones the character chose, which adds dimension to the story. The green the different choices Gatsby can make, whether it serves as a warning, an inspiration, or an urge to get ahead. The white symbolizes a mask, or a façade. It allows the characters to portray themselves as a whole other person and hide who they really are. This puts a piece of reality into the story, as everyone wears a white mask of some kind to hide his or her true self from the world. It is the unsubtle clues given to the reader that are fascinating and allow a person to relate to the characters.

Common Links between Arthur Miller and Steven Crane

Many authors, though from different times and writing periods, have similar elements in their literary works. It is interesting to look at the resemblances between writers and their stories. There are two books I have read in the past month that show these connections clearly. They are The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Maggie by Steven Crane. The Crucible and Maggie are analogous because they allude to the personal experiences of their respective authors, the native dialect of the characters in the stories is used, and both authors are concerned with the individual.

Arthur Miller used his experience being persecuted in the Communist witch hunt of the 150s to tell the story of the Salem Witch Hunt of the 160s. Like Miller, Crane used his experiences living in the Bowery to tell the story of a poor Irish girls downfall. Miller uses archaic words and expressions in parts of his tale, and Crane uses the Irish dialect of the Bowery in all of the dialogue. Both authors are concerned with the individual, but in different ways. Miller was a social dramatist, which means he dealt with the behavior of the individual and their various responses in different situations. This is shown in many ways, but one of the major ones is the girls reactions to being caught dancing in the woods. Abigail made up stories of bewitchment by the family slave, Tituba, while Betty pretended to be sick and unconscious when around adults. Crane believed that a person could not overcome their environment and was interested in the effects environment has on a persons life. The plot is basically centered around this part of the book, because although Maggie is a blossom in a mud puddle she still cannot escape her bad upbringing.

In the two books, The Crucible and Maggie, a few of these parallels are allusions to personal experiences of their authors, the characters native dialect is used, and the authors use their works to examine the individual. In the writing of this paper, not only did I see these comparisons and textual examples, I saw many more as well. One will find that authors tend to have certain similarities. Whether it is that these parallels are the key to being a great author, or if it is that the authors just have similar writing styles, I do not know. I can only say that all of these things and more help to bring the reader into the story and allow the avid reader to pick them out and take a look at what they see. In this case, I saw the aforementioned comparisons, and I will continue to search for more.Write my Essay on Common Links Between Arthur Miller and Steven Crane for me

The novel "Montana 148" written by Larry Watson held a series of tragic events, which were to have a permanent and decisive impact on David and his parents. This chain of events were to turn David's young life and that of his family upside down forever and which was to angrily lead him out of childhood, destroying his innocence and youthful naivety in the process. However, David's shocking revelations lead to his painful gaining of wisdom. David is forced to make ethical choices of loyalty and justice between his loving father and a devoted uncle Frank, a local white doctor, a war hero, and favourite son of the towns leading family.

When David's story begins, we learn that his life is a stable and a happy one, his present family is close and loving. David's innocence is protected by his parents. His family is very stable combined with the respect in which the much loved and admired Frank has held by both the townspeople and David, that made the events which occurred suddenly and with an increasing speed, so shocking and destructive, particularly for David.

David's view of life dramatically starts to change through the eavesdropping of his mother and father's conversation regarding Frank's behaviour towards Marie Little Soldier, a housekeeper, a member of the underprivileged and discriminated Indian indigenous race, a person with no power or influence.

David learns a great lesson about morals after Marie was sexually assaulted, raped and found dead a few days after Frank goes in to see her. Frank claims she died of pneumonia. David reveals the fact that he thought he saw Frank walking into David's house a little while before Marie was found dead and he confesses to his parents, "While I was sitting there I saw someone cutting across our backyard. There's a knothole you can see out of. I was pretty sure it was Uncle Frank. Then I got out and watched him go down the tracks. He was going toward town"(pg-7). After receiving the shock of knowing his uncle is a murderer, David experiences a growth in morality. He chooses to inform his parents what he knows, or at least part of what he knows, about Uncle Frank. This shows that he is developing in the area of honesty. Before, David would have kept all this to himself, rather than face his parents with knowledge he knows will displease them.Write my Essay on Montana 1948 is about the loss of innocence and the painful getting of wisdom." Discuss for me

Wes (Frank's brother, a county sheriff) abuses his powers, as a sheriff to incarcerate Frank in his home basement. Wes chooses to protect his family reputation before the law. He does not fulfil his role of duty as a sheriff by discriminating against the Indian community. Julian (David's grandfather) was very unhappy that Wes would lock up his own brother despite the fact that Wes saves Frank from the humiliation of going to jail. David faces an even more intimidating threat when he notices that a few of the hired hands from his grandfather's ranch come to his house to try and break Frank free. He comments, "These men must have figured, with Grandpa's help, that Frank was in the basement, and that rear door was the way they were going in after him" (pg-1).

Through dreadful experiences, David feels an emerging sense of adulthood because he realises how he must act and the gravity of the situation in which he and his family are involved. He is far from the child who once looked forward to visits from his uncle and visits to his grandfather's ranch. As an adult, he is concerned with the welfare of his family and his parents' well being, emotionally. David exemplifies this and stands by his family when they are in need. He does not desert them or feel shameful. He stays loyal and true to those he cares for and loves. Thus, he has shown his ability to act as an adult would.

A loss of David's innocence also appears during his killing of a live magpie. This brings about a an evil in himself also reinforcing the fact that he has killed a living creature in the wild and mentioning that "I needed that, I thought, I hadn't even known it but I had to kill something"(pg-81). The particular significance about this plays an important part in his morals and sends of thoughts as he considers that he also is capable of committing such unfortunate yet amoral things. "Looking in the dead bird's eye, I realised that these strange, unthought of connections sex and death, lust and violence, desire and degradation are there, there, deep in even a good heart's chambers"(pg-8).

In the rapid journey, which David has been forced to undertake from innocence to experience, to seeing life in a whole, truthful and certainly more painful way, he learns many lessons and gains some important insights, but none more disturbing than that which immediately follows Frank's suicide. "You see, I knew I knew! I knew! That Uncle Frank's suicide had solved all of our problems … I felt something for my uncle in death that I hadn't felt for him in life. It was gratitude, yes, but it was something more. It was very close to love" (pg-161).

The Most Meaningful Connections in Life

All my life I was lead to believe that I could trust no one but my family. That no one would care as much and no one would help me out as much. Two years ago something happened that shattered every thing I was taught to believe. What do you do when you can't trust those you've loved all your life? It made me think about my future and past in a whole new perspective. I questioned everyone's feelings and attitude towards me. Where they genuine? Can they be trusted? I not only lost faith, but I lost the connection I thought was the most meaningful in life, the connection between me and my inner most thoughts and feelings.

I trusted my family with my life. Betraying me, they left me isolated with the fear of rejection. I no longer feel that family is as meaningful as it once was. Even though my family's support meant a lot to me, I didn't have a strong connection with them. Most people believe that family comes before everything. They think that I'm stupid for closing the door to my family. But little do they know, life's experiences change relationships as well as feelings. As the days went on, the same feeling has arisen about Friendship.

I thought that Friendship was very meaningful, but lately my opinion's becoming futile. Trust is something that comes easily for me. I trusted those who showed me remorse and compassion, and let them get close enough to snub me. Leaving me dead in their tracks was the only way most of my friends let me down. I could only take rejection so many times, after that I began to think that something was terribly wrong with me. That feeling left me to wonder if anyone could ever love me for me, or would I have to change myself.

Do my essay on my lifes work CHEAP !

I realized that ever person that I have ever loved has run as far as they can from me. Whether it was a friend, family member or just a Crush doesn't really make a difference. I loved those who loved me back. So technically, since not a lot of people bothered to give me the time of day, my love didn't reach them. I'd taught myself that it was their loss not mine. It was actually a very reassuring thought.

All in all, my experiences have taught me a lot about life's meaningful connections. They don't mean anything unless they 're a two-way connection. Also a connection means nothing if there is no trust, because I lost trust I lost the a lot more than just a connection or a relationship, I lost the biggest part of me, my heart. If you could take a moment an think about all the people that mean the most to you and narrow it down to those who you think care about you just as much as you care about them, you'll see that those are the people who you share the most meaningful connection with.

companies watch their collection periods closely, whenever, the collection period lengthens, the business must find other souurces of financing, such as borrowing of facting receivables. during recessing , customersBeowulf was altruistic because he always put the needs of others before his own. His whole reason for coming to Herot was to help the people against Grendel. He even stayed to defeat Grendel's mother and the fire dragon. "My life was almost lost, fighting for it, struggling under water I'd have been dead at once, and the fight finished, if our Father in Heaven had not helped me." (Line 10). In the story, Beowulf is also a Tragic Hero. He possesses goodness by telling the king of the Danes in lines 1-8 that he is honored to be there helping them. Beowulf shows superiority in the story. "I sold my life for this treasure, and I sold it well." (Line 76). I believe that his tragic flaw is that he was too sure of himself, and never brought the right weapon to fight with. In line 11 it tells how his sword broke into bits after striking the dragon. Beowulf's tragic realization is that he knew that it was his time, because he believed in the Lord. (Line 17-0).

Beowulf is a folk epic because it involves the five characteristics. First is the hero, which was Beowulf, who is a figure of imposing stature. The setting covers vast nations, which included Denmark, Germany, and Sweden. Third is the action, which in this case there are three, defeating Grendel and his mother, and the Fire dragon. The other characters included Shild, Hrothgar, Grendel, Grendel's mother, the Fire dragon, and Wiglaf. The last characteristic is the poet. It is a recount of the deeds of the hero with a measure of objectivity.

I. Introduction

Lead

Air pollution is a serious problem today. There are countless different pollutants that contribute to the pollution of our air. Air pollution is a growing problem. Though we have found solutions for many of our air pollution substances, it is not enough to compensate for all pollution around us. One big contributor to air pollution is lead.

Lead is a metal that is present in the environment mainly as a result of industrialization. It can be present in water, soil, but generally in air. Lead is useful for many things today and its use dates back to centuries ago. Although it has its advantages, it has more disadvantages. Lead contributes greatly to the problem of air pollution today. It is a persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemical. Also, at one point, lead polluted water greatly. Since better filtering systems have been made, water pollution, in water pipes, caused from lead is rare now.

II. Main Information

Properties of Lead

Lead is extracted mainly from galena. It can be present as gas or solid (metal). Lead has several properties that make it unique; it is very malleable and can be hammered into any shape. It is a soft, bluish-white, dense metallic element. It can be very easily melted and joined. Lead has good corrosion resistance in most common environments. Lead's high density has been proved effective in weights. It's ductile and is relatively a poor conductor of electricity. The electrochemical properties of lead allow it to be used in storage batteries in all motor vehicles and for some back-up power supplies. Lead's atomic number is 8 and its atomic weight is 107.. Its melting point is 7.5°C and its boiling point is 1744°C.

Lead is used in roofing, window cames, kitchen, tableware, and ornamental uses for many centuries. It's also used as solders, ammunition, electroplating, electrical equipment, X-ray and nuclear shielding, specialty casting, cement glazes and stabilizer in plastics.

Causes of Lead Pollution

Lead is caused and released by things such as industrial plants, steel factories, and power plants. Leaded gasoline, at one point, contributed greatly to the cause of lead poisoning. But several years ago, it phased out, leaving lead emissions decreased by 8%. Today the leading cause of atmospheric lead pollution is metal processing. Among the largest lead toxins are automobile emissions that are discharged from fuel combustion in the automobile's motor. Also, recycling waste products causes the discharge of lead.

Effects on the Earth

An ecosystem is an ecological community, functioning with its unit. It is a system formed by the interaction of organisms with their physical environment. Lead effects our environment in several ways. It is a great pollutant to soil. Acid rain dissolves lead shot. As a result, dissolved lead is released into soil and sediment and can enter ground water and surface water. In 18, the U.S. EPA identified lead-based paint, point emitters, and leaded gasoline as the three sources of elevated soil-lead levels and suggested targeting these sources in reducing lead contamination in soil.

Lead also can be fatal if it enters a body of a human or an animal. Even small amount can be deadly.

Cycles

Lead is dangerous towards many natural cycles. The food cycles are often disturbed in the wildlife, due to lead pollution. An environment filled with wildlife animals, located near a motorway or factory, often have lead problems. For example, when a bird swallows or breathes lead, it will most likely die. A larger animal that feeds on it may die of starvation.

Also, water cycle is affected by it as well. Steel factories release lead dust, which usually falls to the ground or water. When it rains, that water may rain on a reservoir or another area used as a drinking source, getting into water pipes. Water pollution caused by lead today is rare, due to better filter systems.

Effects on Living Organisms

Lead can cause various illnesses to humans. The physical effects are anemia, pale or dry skin, headaches/stomachs, lead paralysis of bones and muscles, buzzing sound in the ear, dizziness and nephrosclerosis. Usually, lead gets into the human body through food, but sometimes through respiratory organs. The main lead pollutants in food are vegetables and medical herb that are usually grown near a motorway. The most affected organs in a human body are usually brain and nervous system, kidneys, blood, and the reproductive system of both males and females. Also, lead in a different form, is a possible carcinogen.

In pregnant women, lead poisoning can affect the developing of the fetus. In children, lead poisoning impairs their mental development and causes a small but measurable decrease in I.Q. Another example of lead exposure to children is lead deposited in the soil from leaded gasoline fumes along busy roadways. Children can ingest lead, as they play.

Lead can cause seizure, coma, or possibly death. It affects virtually every system in the body. Its mental affects are learning disabilities and behavioral problems. People are affected largely from the contamination of lead in food. Animals or cattle being fed vegetables that are contaminated with lead, enters the human body through food.

III. Conclusion

Possible Solutions

The problem of water pollution caused by lead has been solved. By installing filter systems or devices in all water pipes in a home, you can prevent any sort of water pollution caused by lead. Usually homes built after 10 already have filter devices installed. In order to prevent lead from entering you home, have air-refining systems through out your home. Do not enter you house with shoes on; shoes may carry lead dust. Also, you should be careful where they children play. Lead is a poisonous substance that unfortunately does not have many solutions.

Please note that this sample paper on Lead is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Lead, we are here to assist you.
