Energy-Efficient Technology

Americas swelling thirst for oil is one of our leading economic and national security problems. We use a quarter of the worlds petroleum, but have just three percent of known reserves. As a result, were importing more than half the oil we use each day from some of the most unstable regions of the world- spending more than $0 billion each year on Persian Gulf oil alone (Lashof and Hwang1).

There are effective technologies that can substantially reduce our need for foreign oil and help alleviate environmental harm. For instance, Photovoltaic energy, another term for solar energy, as well as wind power, are unlimited sources of energy that does not cause environmental harm, nor do they cost anything. Energy-efficient designed homes using renewable energy sources are demonstrated technologies that are readily available. In addition, the energy efficient designed buildings allow consumers to save money by improving the building layout, which limits the loss of useful solar gain. Photovoltaic, wind energy, and buildings designed to be energy-efficient, are concepts of the future that should be recognized as a current solution to eliminating energy waste, energy costs, as well as environmental damages.

What many people do not know is the unrealized potential of photovoltaic and wind energy. Joel Davidson states, As fossil fuels are depleted, the scramble for the few remaining pockets of conventional fuels will continue to destabilize the world political and economic situation, leading to ever-greater conflict and confrontation. Meanwhile, a virtually limitless and globally available source of energy- solar electricity and wind - offers a solution (). Not only is wind and solar energy universally available, it is virtually free. Solar and wind powers are becoming increasingly popular with home and business owners, resulting in lower initial investments because of improve manufacturing techniques. Initial investment in a photovoltaic system for a home costs, ... approximately $0,000 which include labor and materials,(Zoellick and Posner 14). New kinds of photovoltaic panels are dramatically bringing costs down and government rebate programs are also cutting homeowners costs by as much as 60 percent in some states ( Suess and Long 18). Since owners' of the photovoltaic systems does not pay electric bills, the initial investment is paid back through savings on non-existent energy bills. Mike Sagrillo in Home Power magazine mentions that, wind generators can cost from $1000 to over $000 for residential systems. After the initial investments are paid off, through savings, the owner can cut down on overall expenses. Finally, the result of owning a photovoltaic or wind system concludes in overall benefits.

The opposition to photovoltaic and wind technology has some concerns. The problem with the photovoltaic systems is that at night there is no sunlight. However, solar panels can store the suns' energy in batteries for use in bad weather or at night. Therefore, there are no downsides to owning a photovoltaic system. In addition Mike Sagillo states, " noise from the blades rotation during high winds is a significant factor in the opposition argument for wind power generators...(). Although wind energy does not produce any harmful by-products, it cannot be used in regions with no wind. Until the people understand the benefits of renewable energy, money will be lost in utility payments, energy will be wasted and the environmental will continues to be harmed by wasteful byproducts.

There are many benefits to having energy-efficient buildings. One benefit is to orient the longest wall of building towards the south, to better distribute solar radiation throughout the year. According to Bill Steen of Straw Bale House, …heat gain can be limited during the summer months, when extra heat is undesirable, if the houses are properly oriented in order to work with the natural cyclic movement of the sun, receiving heat from sunlight in winter and excluding hot sunlight by shading in the summer(51). Windows and photovoltaic panels should be placed on the south side of the building because the sun shines on the building from the south, as it rises from the east and sets in the west, meaning that the house can absorb more energy especially with the photovoltaic system. Another benefit is to increase the amount insulation in the exterior wall and have proper ventilation in the building. By implementing these energy-efficient designs, power will be conserved because heat in the winter and air from air-conditioning in the summer will not escape, resulting in less use of the heaters or air conditioning units. As the El Paso Solar Energy Association states, A energy-efficient home design will not only lower your utility bills, it will be comfortable. Comfort is priceless

Energy-efficient technology needs to be utilized sooner than later. Buildings with energy-efficient designs, cuts energy waste by utilizing solar gain and maximizing insulation. Energy costs are diminished using photovoltaic and wind energy because the source is never ending and the consumer does not pay monthly electric bills. Unlike oil and coal, newer technologies will reverse environmental damages due to its lack of releasing harmful byproducts into the environment. If the government starts to become more energy-efficient, then the consumer will become more energy-efficient. This reduces the need to look for oil in unstable areas. This also saves the government substantial amounts of money that could be used in furthering research in new technologies and offering tax incentives for the homeowners. Implementing energy saving concepts will help reduce environmental harm as well as financial burden.

During the progressive era reforms were either political or social. It was discovered by most social reformers however that make social reforms political reforms must also be made. The people that wanted to make these reforms occur are called muckrakers. One very famous muckraker was Upton Sinclair, who wrote The Jungle, a novel exposing unsafe, disgusting, nauseating aspects of fertilizer and meat-packing factories. Meatpacking or meat-processing is the wholesale business of buying and slaughtering animals, then processing and distributing their carcasses to retailers. The livestock industry was and still is one of the largest in the world. The only problem being in the early 100s conditions in these meatpacking factories were absolutely terrible not only for the product, but the people making it. Underpaid, overworked, and dirty factory workers came home every day to their families ridden with the filth and stench of animal carcass. As you can see working conditions in the meat factory were unpleasant, but to make it worse the job is also extremely dangerous. Since the workers usually cut the meat with sharp tools or bladed machinery many accidents, from losing fingers to losing your arm occur day in and day out. The meat is also almost as deadly as the factory job. Since there were no safety regulations, a rat could crawl into the meat grinder and end up as the hamburger you think you are eating. Thanks to Upton Sinclair's investigation of these crimes America became aware of the situation and began to act on it. Soon the meatpacking companies had to be educated on safe food handling practices, such as plant sanitation, packaging requirements, and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point programs. Although these reforms were highly effective it is true that more can be don't today to clean up the meatpacking industry.

Some people cannot overcome obstacles no matter how hard they try. Some obstacles seem harder than others and require more work. One obstacle that I overcame was getting good grades. Getting good grades results in admission to various colleges and praise from the people around you. Getting good grades may seem easy, but it requires a lot of hard work. Some barriers that keep you from getting good grades consist of not a lot of time to study, distractions, and stress.

With such few hours in a day to study, there are various reasons why getting good grades is hard. First, I have to go to bed early. Since I am in high school, school starts very early in the morning. If I go to bed early, that eliminates needed time to study for tests the next day. Second, I have other homework to do. When all of my classes pile homework upon me, that replaces the time in which I need to study. Third, I have after school activities. I think that exercise and being involved outside your house are very important, but when you are absent from home, studying does not get completed. Distractions are also another obstacle in accomplishing good grades.

Distractions lead your mind away from trying to get good grades for multiple reasons. First, talking to your friends distracts you from your studies. Some people think that socializing is more important than studies, but really only effects your grades. Also, not understanding your work leads to pondering. If you do not understand something you are doing, your mind has the tendency to wonder away from your studies. Last, you may have other thoughts on your mind. Sometimes doing work for school is not the most exciting thing and you want to think about other thoughts. Distractions are obstacles, but stress is also.

A major obstacle in trying to succeed with good greats is stress. First, students get a lot of grief from their parents. Disappointing your parents causes a lot of students to be stressed out which results in a drop in grades. Second, bad grades cause stress. If a student does poorly on a test, that student feels stressed for doing so badly. Third, homework and projects results in stress. Some teachers insist on giving students multiple projects and a lot of homework and that causes stress on the students. In conclusion, stress is a major factor in trying to succeed in getting good grades.

Everyone Has A Little Good In Them

Alice Walkers novel The Color Purple shows a wide range of personality traits and values held by black men in the early 100s in the Southern United States. Many readers and critics have said that the book unfairly depicts men, but there is proof that Alice Walker does not have that intention, and the portrayal is historically accurate. In the novel The Color Purple, Alice Walker shows men as being abusive and evil, yet still having a heart and soul. The novel tells about an evil man, referred to only as Mr. ; it tells about an emotionally unstable man named Harpo; and it tells about a man who is thought of as perfect, as in the character named Jack. Alice Walker covers all grounds when depicting the way men were in the 100s, although many people see her book as representing them very unfairly.

Write my Essay on Everyone Has A Little Good In Them for me

A character in the novel who is shown to be the most cruel, heartless man in the whole story is known only as Mr.. He is the man to whom Celie was married, being given to him by her stepfather, when she was only 14 years old. One of many examples in the book that proves Mr.to be a woman hater and an over-all bad guy, is an entire conversation that he has with Sofia, his sons new wife. It sure is hot, she say. Mr.dont say nothing. He just look her up and down.... Young womens no good these days, he say. Got they legs open to every Tom, Dick and Harry. (Walker, ) This quote reveals what a rude and arrogant man he was. But Alice Walker shows how this man can go from being a cruel, self-centered, abusive husband near the beginning of the novel, to a gentle-hearted, caring man towards the end. After all the evil he done I know you wonder why I dont hate him. Celie writes in a letter to Nettie. Look like he trying to make something out of himself. I dont mean just that he work and he clean up after himself and he appreciate some of the things God was playful enough to make. I mean when you talk to him now he really listen, and one time, out of nowhere in the conversation us was having, he said Celie, Im satisfied this the first time I ever lived on earth as a natural man. It feel like a new experience. (Walker, 67) This shows that after all those years of being a woman hater and treating women like objects, Mr. was looked upon as a good man, even by a woman who he raped, abused, and emotionally tormented. It shows that he wasnt a genuinely evil man, and that he was in fact human, as he had the capacity to change.

Harpo is a character who isnt developed as any particular stereotype at the beginning of the book. Alice Walker shows how he is manipulated into being an abusive husband, You ever hit her? Mr. _________ ast. Harpo look down at his hands. Naw, suh, he say low, embarrass. Well how you spect to make her mind? (Walker, 7). This is also a good example of how manipulative Mr. can be. Throughout the book, we see many sides of Harpo, but mainly we see that he is confused and doesnt really know how to handle his own life without constant advice from others. Harpo sitting out on the steps, crying like his heart gon break. Oh, boo-hoo boo-hoo. He got his head in his hands, tears and snot running down his chin.... [Its] Sofia, he say. Sofia Love you, she a good wife. Good to the children and good looking. Hardworking. God fearing and clean. I dont know what more you want. I want her to do what I say, like you do for Pa. This quote shows how emotionally unstable Harpo is, and how he falls into the abusive pattern which was role-modeled by his father. He wants his wife Sofia to obey him like Celie obeys Mr. , and by trying to force obedience upon Sofia, he ends up feeling bad. Further into the book, he realizes that he was wrong in trying to force Sofia to obey him, and becomes a loving husband and good father.

The author also shows some men in the novel as being almost perfect in a sense, such as Jack. There is not much description on him, but, for example, a man named Jack, whom Celie writes about in a letter to Nettie when Celie writes about Jack, she writes Jack is tall and kind and dont hardly say anything. Love children. Respect his wife, Odessa, and all Odessa amazon sisters. Anything she want to take on, he right there. (Walker, p. 0) Alice Walker is showing here that even though there were a lot of men who were abusive and treated women badly, there were also the men who were quite the opposite. Jack, who is kind and respectful, loved his wife and children so much that he would do anything for them; He was the man that all the women wished they were with. Although the portrayal is somewhat one-dimensional Jack provides hope to females in the book and also to female readers.

In the novel The Color Purple, Alice Walker shows men as being abusive and evil, yet still having a heart and soul. Alice Walker uses exaggeration to prove that the men of that time and culture were abusive and treated their women as objects rather than people. She is not necessarily being unfair when she describes how the men acted - pigheadedly and blind to their wrongdoing - because thats how they really were. Many black women who lived in the early 100s were abused and treated unfairly, and if many of the situations described in this book took place in todays society, the men would be jailed. Today there are womens support groups, shelters for abused women and their children, and anger management groups for violent men. There are also many positive role models in the black communities, even in rural areas. Alice Walker shows all different kinds of men in the novel, but she does not highlight the good ones. The readers really have to dig beneath the surface to see the good qualities in the men that the author was writing about.

Tragedy is a type of drama or literature that shows the downfall or destruction of a

noble or outstanding person, traditionally one who possesses a character weakness called

a tragic flaw. The tragic hero, through choice or circumstance, is caught up in a sequence

of eventst that inevitably results in disaster. These terms can all apply to the

Cheap Custom Essays on Othello

Shakespearean plays Othello and Julius Ceaser, with the characters Othello and Brutus as

the tragic heroes.

First and foremorst, Othello possesses the qualities of a hero by being a top

general in Venice. Othello takes on the trecherous role as the head of the army and is

successful at his position. Not only is Othello a born leader, but he is born of great rank

from a noble family. He has it all together and is a role model to his citizens. The people

of Venice respect Othello for his nobility, military knowledge, and superiority. Othello is

able to relate to his people as well. Being involved in war since the age of seven, Othello

has the experience of war just like his fellow soldiers are currently involved in. He

understands the customs of war and what his men are going through which enables him to

be such a powerful leader. What distinguishes Othello from the common soldiers is his

soldierly courage and self-control. Like Othello, Brutus too was a noteworthy figure in

society. He was well respceted by his fellow citizens with whom he could easily relate

to. Brutus, however, had the great ability to move his people through speeches. One of

the most memorable speeches in literature is the scene at the town center in which Brutus

gets the public to revolt against the all-powerful Julius Ceasar. Both Othello and Brutus

are heros in one sense for their ability to relate to and appreciate the efforts of their

people.

What makes Othello the "tragic" hero is his one tragic flaw-innocence. Because

Othello is such a powerful figure, he expects the respect of his fellow citizens, especially

Iago, who has a well-known reputation for honesty. However, once Othello has been

deceited and lied to, he must struggle to determine whether he should believe the honesty

of Iago or the honesty of Desmodema. Othello's honesty and the trust he puts in people

turns and backfires on him. When Iago puts thoughts of suspicion into Othello's mind of

Desmodema and Cassio's love affair, Othello goes so far as to say he would rather go on

with his ways without the knowledge of that which will hurt him. Just as Brutus died a

tragic death in "Julius Ceasar" so too does Othello. Othello's love for Desmodema

continues to grow and the fact that she would betray him bothers him so much it brings

Othello to killing Desmodema and then himself.

It is obvious Othello is a prime example of the tragic hero. He is a such a noteable

character it is tragic to see him fall by the control of his own people. One of such people

being Iago, Othello becomes the victim in his own world.

Before the Nuremberg Laws were brought out many German Jews were living normal lives and contributed significantly to German culture. After the racial laws were brought out everything turned upside down for the German Jews and they were no longer considered a citizen of Germany. The Jews occupations, pastimes and education all changed after the Nuremberg laws were brought in because they weren't allowed to do anything. The Nuremberg laws changed life for the German Jews horrendously.

The Nuremberg Laws were introduced into Germany in 15. The purpose of these laws was to set the boundaries of what the Nazi party considered to be acceptable to them. The main purpose though was to exterminate Jews in Germany, in order to create a "perfect race". The laws prevented them from marrying non-Jews. They also lost their right to vote and had to use separate seats in buses and parks that were painted yellow.

Before the Nuremberg laws the Jews considered themselves as Germans first and Jews second. Many Jews served in World War 1 and they considered Germany a home. During the Weimar Republic Germany Jews were considered to be a citizen in every respect. They were to be found in all walks of life, especially in professions such as medicine, dentistry, law, the universities and the civil service. German Jews only considered themselves to be different from other Germans only in the religion they practiced. They were merchants, scholars and professional people who went to the same schools and gathered in the same places as other Germans. The other Germans were used to dealing with Jewish businessmen and having their ailments treated by Jewish doctors. There was anti-Semitism going on way before the Nuremberg laws. Many Germans were jealous of the Jews having money and good jobs and just being happy. The Germans began to blame the Jews for everything that went wrong in the country, leading to the hatred of the Jews. This was called Anti-Semitism. From 1-14 the Nazi's took control of Germany under Adolf Hitler who had an irrational hatred of Jews. They blamed the Jews their loss of the war and accused them of trying to over-take the world.

Cheap College Papers on Life changed dramatically for Jews, practically overnight, after the introduction of the Nuremberg Laws.

After the Nuremberg Laws were introduced violence against the Jews increased a lot and thousands of Jews fled from Germany to other parts of Europe, but those who stayed could not have imagined what was to come. Jews were expelled from schools and fired from their jobs because they were Jews. The Nuremberg laws didn't allow Jews from practicing professions such as medicine, law, and teaching. After five years of Hitler's regime German Jews were isolated and terrorized. They were no longer a part of German life. Jews were excluded from all artistic, dramatic, literary, and film enterprises. Jewish farmers or those with Jewish ancestors could no longer own farmland and were denied rights to family property inheritance. The laws quickly increased the violence against German Jews. By 18, a quarter of the half million Jews in Germany had left the country. Jews were forbidden to take any property when they left and were expected to only have the clothes on their backs.

In 18 a Jew shot a Nazi official dead and Hitler was absolutely furious. He ordered his army, the S.A, to commence a week of terror against the Jews. It began on the 10th November with 'The night of broken glass.' 10,000 Jewish shopkeepers had their windows smashed, while Jewish homes went up in flames. The S.A men murdered dozens and arrested thousands on the grounds of being a Jew. The Jews were ordered to pay the Nazi Government 1 billion marks. The S.A men also continued their campaign of hate against the Jews through humiliation as they found innocent Jewish men, women and children to get down on their hands and knees and scrub the streets.

Life did change dramatically for the Jews after the Nuremberg laws were brought in. The happy life they had turned to a life that noone would ever want. The Jews had very good jobs and most of the Jews were quite wealthy. Jealousy was key factor to why the Germans hated the Jews and plus they wanted to blame all their worries on the Jews because they believed they caused them. The Nuremberg Laws was a law to make the Jews a non-citizen and they believed the Jews weren't human and they treated them like they weren't. Hitler was the main man behind it all who persuaded everyone to hate them and got everyone else to do his dirty work for him for example 'the night of broken glass' where he got the S.A army to smash their windows, burn their homes, arrest them and murder them. The Nazis killed altogether at least 6,000,000 Jews. Sadly enough life did change for the Jews for no reason.

Engels was born in Barmen, Germany. He came from a wealthy Protestant family. Engels from a young age developed a quest for knowledge and an inquisitive mind. He was influenced by the works of the radical German poet Heinrich Heine and the German philosopher Hegel. But as he grew older Engels felt that he had to make clear his own thoughts and beliefs. Therefore, in 18 he began writing on literary and philosophical topics for a number of publications. In 184 Engels was converted to Communist beliefs by the German Socialist Moses Hess. This change of beliefs sparked and interest that changed his life and the life's of many others to come.

Engels, as a young man was sent to England to help manage his father's cotton-factory in Manchester. On his arrival and in deed for the years to come Engels was shocked by the condition of the city. He found that the location of the working-peoples quarter and the treatment of the working class by their employers was unsatisfactory. These substandard conditions lead him to write and account of the conditions in a book entitled 'Condition of the Working Classes in England' which he wrote in 1844.

Engels believed that the manner in which the city (Manchester) was built was peculiar and even insulting. The city was built "so that a person may live in it for years, and go in and out daily without coming into contact with a working-peoples quarter or even with workers, that is, so long as he confines himself to his business or to pleasure walks" 1. He believed that the design of the city encouraged a feeling of segregation between the classes. The city shut out the working class from the main roads, in order to conceal anything that might offend the eyes of the bourgeoisie. The concealment of suffering and poor conditions only assists the deterioration of the working class's situation. The fact that a person can live for years in a city without encountering the neglected working class only encourages ignorance. When the men with power (the bourgeoisie) don't know the truth about their own city, when they don't know the suffering and the substandard living conditions of the working class, they have no way of improving the city and improving living conditions. But what is astonishing is that the separate living quarters "arise chiefly from the fact, that by unconscious tacit agreement, as well as the out-spoken conscious determination" 1. What sort of a society creates a city with the conscious determination to isolate the working class from the other classes?

The treatment of the working class by the government and by their employer is repulsive. During Engels stay in Manchester all social welfare for the working class whether in money or in previsions was halted. Immediately after this workhouses were built for the unemployed members of the working class. The working conditions inside the workhouses were dreadful and the policy for these workhouses was such as to "frighten away everyone who has the slightest prospect in life without this form of public charity"1. The government took away social welfare for the unemployed and replaced it with redundant workhouses with substandard conditions. The food in the workhouses was inedible. In fact the food was so bad that many workers would commit a small crime to get them into jail, as the food and living conditions were better in jail. The workhouse is in fact a jail of sort. If a worker did not finish his designated task he would get nothing to eat, if he wanted to go outside for air he would have to ask permission also to diminish individualism the workers wore a uniform. To prevent the workers labor from competing with the companies outside, the workers were asked to perform useless tasks. The men broke stones, the women, children and aged men picked oakum, for an unknown reason. The sadistic English government decided that rather than give social welfare to the unemployed they would lock them up in workhouses with bad living conditions. What sort of a country takes away social welfare and replaces it with redundant dangerous work?

After Engels published 'Condition of the Working Classes in England' he began contributing to a radical journal called 'Franco-German Annals' that was being edited by Karl Marx in Paris. Later in 1844 Engels met Marx they shared each others views on capitalism. Marx and Engels decided to work together. Together they wrote the 'The Communist Manifesto' which was published in 1848. Engels and Marx thought of Communism as the necessary reform for the social problems in England.

'The Communist Manifesto' summarized the nature of the communist society that would be established by the proletariat, a society where the problems of 1th century England were solved. They believed that "the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" and that if classes were eradicated then all struggle and conflict would cease. Engels and Marx proclaimed that in England property is already non-existent for nine tenths of the population. Therefore, to do away with private property would make all equal and assist the proletariats who make up nine tenths of the population. They said that the only men achieving anything out of the work that the lower class accomplishes are the bourgeois. The working class are given small amounts of money and are treated as inferiors. Communism, by placing all people as equals allows social integration with all people. Communism gives people material objects but allows no one to indulge in excess.

They believed that people should remain agricultural to reverse the effects of the industrial revolution. Problems like crime, pollution, overcrowding and poor living conditions would be fixed. Engels and Marx saw that the bourgeois took advantage of the proletariats. They thought that the problem of England and the civilized world and came to the conclusion that communism would solve all of these problems. They concluded by saying "Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Working men of all countries, unite!".
