The notion that modern art developed in multiple cultures and nations is one that needs to be further explored. The foundation of modern art contrasts the prevailing art history within it. The primary reason for this position was not racism or cultural ignorance, but rather total absorption with the prevailing art philosophy of the time- that art should ultimately serve a higher or absolute ideal. But to understand modern art it is not necessary to know its history, in fact, history gives no more meaning to its impression or beauty through the eyes of the observer. Therefore, there is no reason to look into the history of modern art nor any other pointless meanings.

On the other hand, we have modern literature. The idealistic nature and realism are not present to the oblivious mind. The symbolism and subtext of each unit or sentence is translated in many ways, the possibilities of its theme, topic, or desire are not directly stated within the realm of modern literature. Modern literature is in may ways much like the modern art. It works with experimentation, fragmentation, alienation, individualism, and distortion of society and humanity and deals face to face with reality and imagination of the daily human life. It often depicts all industrial societies and simultaneous views in the question of life and death.

"A Rose for Emily," encounters the moral dilemma of aging and prosperity to love. The idea of religion is lost, for "god is dead." If god is dead, there is no life, there is nothing to live for or dream of. The image of heaven after death, and eternal happiness was lost. Emily was a hometown city girl. Her father was a very important figure to the community and she was his prized possession. After his death, the city fell apart, and she continued to live where she had grown up. She later married a Yankee man, who she new she would be with all her life. The man was the opposite of her father, crude, insulting, and imperative to society and humanity around him. After her death, she was found out to have been sleeping every night with her dead husband.

Her alienation, isolation, individualism, and fragmentation of the South. She was alone most of her life, even when she did not realize it. The reality of death was not ever understood. She fell incompetent to society and her views were old fashioned and out of context to modern beliefs. Her isolation held her from the true reality of humanity and opportunities she could have been offered. Emily didn't have an individualistic nature. She was dependent on her father, and then when she had no one to ask for help, she lost her sanity. The south at this point was under defeat of the north. The ironic marriage between her and a Yankee was her weakness. According to The Best Short Stories of the Modern Age, "The little boys would follow in groups to hear him cuss the niggers, and the niggers singing in time to the rise and fill of picks" (6). Again irony is of question here. The North (Yankees) during this time of Civil War were fighting against racial discrimination of African-Americans in a sense, yet he is "cussing the niggers." The setting of the town that Emily lives in, is falling apart. The fragmentation of the South is common throughout modern literature because of (but not limited to) these reasons.Write my Essay on A Rose for Isolation for me

The use of symbolism and irony help convey these literary devises. For example the town in which Emily lives in, is actually a representation of the South. Her father represents the united Americas and one nation or one could argue that he represents god. Irony is used through Emily's and the Yankee's marriage. The author, William Faulkner, conveys descriptive language and original ideas of symbolism to allow the reader a better understanding of the fragmentation of the South during time.

The painting that reflects the mental picture in my mind is much like that in Van Gogh's "The Night Caf ." It resembles isolation and negative recognition, much like that of Emily. The colors are very much like that of Emily's house and life. Although not directly shown, it is dark outside. In particular, there is one older lady that is standing, as though she is lost, she just stands there with a blank look on her. The harsh, un natural light gleams throughout the room. Although there are other people in the room, there is no one there that recognizes her, or shows any emotion to her starry look.

This painting shows alienation through its single most noticeable subject the elderly lady. Although she is not placed in the center, she is not wearing an outstanding garment, or the largest object in the picture, there is something that catches your eye. Her lonely look and lost emotion give an isolated sense about her. Her image of loneliness also contrives a look of individualism to her ways of living.

The elderly woman in the art is very much like that of Emily when she has lost her father and her husband. She is lost and unable to find a way. She attempts to make things the same as before their death, but is failed by her death. The ironic nature of this unknown female is the center of attention, much like that of Emily. Emily is the talk of the town, the outcast, and the odd ling..

A Rose for Emily

The Author's Sympathy

In William Faulkner's short story A Rose for Emily," the author uses sympathetic writing so a character can be viewed with deeper knowledge. The main character, Miss Emily, commits a horrible crime which isn't spotted until the end. Faulkner's storytelling prior to this creates a very sympathetic atmosphere for Miss Emily, and one can't help but feel sorry for her, despite the terrible offense that occurs. Miss Emily is described to be a helpless, broken-down woman whose life has been very hard.

To begin with, Faulkner explains that Miss Emily had been quite damaged by her father's strictness. He was very discriminative, and chased away every man that she ever had interest in. Faulkner includes this to show how lonely and sad Miss Emily had become when her father dies, because he was the only man in her life. She was obviously weakened from this, and being alone for the first time she decided to live in solitude. The reader gains understanding of Miss Emily through learning about where she lived as well. Living in Jefferson, Mississippi included many traditions for women to follow. Society expected her to make getting married a priority, something her father made hard to accomplish. Faulkner goes into depth about her isolation from the town, and how people think of her. They spread rumors, gossip, and whisper about Miss Emily which just makes her seem more of an outcast. The author does point out that they feel a great sense of sympathy for Miss Emily though, which adds to the reader's.

As the story progresses, the further we realize that Miss Emily has truly gone insane. She is just not thinking clearly anymore, and this is due much to her growing up. She doesn't understand the value of things, refuses to pay taxes, denies her father's death, and continues to let the house decay. Certain events in the story are told to make the reader feel more compassion for Miss Emily's behavior, even though they turn out to have much different truths. Firstly, when she buys rat poison for the druggist it at first seems to be for her own suicide. Following that we feel very sorry about the death of Homer Barron, who was Emily's last true love. It turns out in the end that the rat poison was actually used to kill Homer, so that he could be hers forever. This isn't apparent until the end, and up until then those devices were used to build up one's sympathy towards Miss Emily.

William Faulkner uses many different events and descriptions in the story to offer the reader a surplus of sorry feelings for Miss Emily. His main purpose in doing so was to provide a great shock value in the conclusion, and so one can realize just how mad she had become…

Benedict gretton

Investigation in to microphones

We were asked, in groups, to record a piece of music. My group consisted of Liam, Dave, Paul, and me.

The piece of music had to be at least two minutes long. Are aim was to make the best quality recording possible. This was to be achieved only by our choice and placement of microphones. We were not allowed to use any effects, EQ, dynamic processing etc.

Order College Papers on Investigation into microphones

Our recorded piece of music had to consist of at least four different instruments made up of the following,

·At least one collective instrument

·At least one vocal

·At least one acoustic instrument

·At least one amplified, miced up electric instrument

Instrument recorded

Overheads on drum kit (collective instrument)

Microphones used

AKG C-000

For the overheads we first used two Audio Technica pro 7r microphones. These are small diaphragm condenser mics. We found that there was a rumble being picked up so we changed them to a larger diaphragm mic, the AKG C- 000 we used the lo-cut switches to avoid the rumble.

We placed the two overheads about six ft above the drum kit facing down towards the drummer.

Instrument recorded

Snare drum (collective instrument)

Microphone used

Shure SM58

We chose the SM58 because it is a dynamic microphone there for it is strong and would not break if the drummer accidentally hit it. We placed the mic facing the rim of the snare drum about an inch and a half away.

Instrument recorded

Bass drum (collective instrument)

Microphone used

Audio Tecnica pro 5

We chose the pro 5 because it is a large diaphragm dynamic microphone. Dynamic mics can cope with higher SPL signals, which meant it could cope with being placed inside the bass drum.

We positioned the microphone about 7 inches inside the drum.

Instrument recorded

Acoustic guitar

Microphone used

AKG C-414

We first put two mics on the guitar. We placed the C/414 on the neck of the guitar and a Shure SM 58 on the body. The SM 58 was getting to much of a boomy sound so we decided to use just the AKG C-414.

We placed the mic on the neck of the guitar to get a better sound.

Instrument recorded

Electric guitar

Microphone used

AKG C-414

We chose this mic because we felt it would give us the warmest, clearest sound.

We placed the mic facing the rim of the speaker cone on the amp about an inch away.

Instrument recorded

Vocals

Microphone used

Shure SM 58

We placed the microphone behind a pop shield about four inches away from the vocalist.

Instrument recorded

Bass guitar

Microphone used

Shure SM58

We chose the SM58 to record the bass guitar because it gave us the best quality sound.

We placed the mic on the rim of the speaker cone about three inches away.

Society today expects companies, especially multinationals, to return more than just exceptional results and marketplace success. Today, companies must do more than just obey the law, but also act in ways that are consistent with societys sense of what is right. They must be connected to and positively contribute to the societies where they operate. Philip Morris International produces and markets some of the worlds most popular cigarettes, including Camel, a well-known brand. We recognize that they manufacture and market a product that is addictive and causes serious diseases, and that there is intense scrutiny of what they do and of the way they do it.

To think whether Philip Morris's product is socially responsible, we have to first understand the term of societal responsibility. It's the obligations that organizations have to the (1) preservation of the ecological environment and () the general public. ( Kerin, Marketing 7th edition). With this in mind, I personally think that their product is not socially responsible. Tobacco use, particularly cigarette smoking, is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States, but yet, smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer death in both men and women. In addition, it is also responsible for most cancers of the larynx, oral cavity, and esophagus. The health risks with cigarette smoking are not limited to smokers also. The exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, significantly increases a nonsmokers risk of developing lung cancer. How can a product be socially responsible if it's harmful and has a negative impact on society?

However, some people might disagree. Non-smokers might oppose the marketing of these products because they think they might discourage people from quitting, or encourage others to start. Thus, Philip Morris has the responsibility to directly educate and encourage young people not to smoke. As for Philip Morris' responsibility to smokers, cigarette manufacturers have to try to develop products that have the potential of being less harmful. And if these products can be developed, I believe it would be wrong to deny their benefits to adult smokers and that consumers should have full information about them and a choice in deciding whether to use them.

To be considered a good company, a company that is socially responsible and a respected corporate citizen, there is a long list of social measures that it must meet and perform against, but for a tobacco company, the demands are different. For Philip Morris, society and consumers want for them, first, to act - seriously, with commitment and openly on the issues related to their product. It might be contradicting to say that Philip Morris' product is not socially responsible, but that Philip Morris, as a company is socially responsible. I feel that it is a socially responsible company in terms of the actions and willingness to listen, learn and understand what consumers, the public and society expects of them as a tobacco company. To me, they are socially responsible, for they are taking actions to reduce youth smoking, insuring that people are fully informed about the risks and serious health efforts of smoking, trying to develop a product that is less harmful, and being more open in how their business is conducted and operated.

However, if Philip Morris is to become an admired and respected company, it will probably not be on the basis of their products. Rather, I believe, it will be on how they address key issues; how well they inform and communicate with people; on how well they provide solutions to concerns; and, how well they meet societal expectations.

Part II

With lawsuits being filed against fast food restaurants these days, there is no such thing as fast food thats good for you and I think that we, as a society, should stop pressuring fast food chains like McDonald's and Burger King to get healthier. Even though a double or triple cheeseburger is fattening, full of cholesterol and grease, I think it is a socially responsible product. It contains beef, a source of protein, vegetables like lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, and condiments like ketchup and mayonnaise that one would normally eat and use in our daily meals. It would be a different story if we are eating mystery meat or have no idea what its contents are. It's hard to say that a double cheeseburger would not be a socially responsible product, for it all comes down to the choice that the consumer makes. As a consumer and the fact that Burger King offers the nutritional content of the double or triple cheeseburger, gives he or she the choice whether or not to consume that burger.

As for Burger King recalling their toys, I feel that Burger King should assume more responsibility when distributing their toys. It has so many safety calls because the toys are a choking hazard to young children. Since the toys are a way of "reeling in" in the kids by offering then things that they can't do without, the company should take more precaution when toys are distributed to the public. It should test the toys more thoroughly and offer different toys for various ages. It should then display signs to let parents know that they are different toys available for different age group, and have samples display on counters for parents to see. This action would make fast food companies, like Burger King, more socially responsible by ensuring the quality and safety of their product and promoting the protection of the general public's health and safety.

The Hidden Story in Green and White

Color symbolism is really popular in novels written during the 10's. One such example is Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. There is much color symbolism in this novel, but there are two main colors that stand out more than the others. The colors green and white influence the story greatly. Green shows many thoughts, ideas, attitudes, and choices that Gatsby has throughout the story. White represents the stereotypical façade that every character is hiding behind.

The color green, as it is used in the novel, symbolizes different choices the character, Gatsby, can make during his life. The green element in this novel is taken from the green light at the end of the dock near Daisy's house. The color itself represents serenity, as in everything is perfect. This warns Gatsby that he should not pursue his dream for getting Daisy back, because his chance has passed and everything is as it should be. This is shown with Nick's insight, "…His dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him… (Pg.18)"

Another symbolization of the color green, which contradicts the first, is the meaning "go." As in a traffic light signal, most people associate green with the word and action "go." This can be interpreted as meaning Gatsby should go for his dream without hesitation. It implies that Gatsby and Daisy are meant to be together and nothing should stop Gatsby from his destined happiness and love with Daisy. It inspires hope for Gatsby that he is on the right path, heading towards the best years of his life. He believes that things will soon be as they once were, only better. ""I'm going to fix everything just the way they were before," he said nodding determinedly. "She'll see."(Pg. 117.)"

Cheap University Papers on The Great Gatsby Symbolism Essay

The last symbolization the color green has in this novel is an urge to strive ahead in life, to do better in life and succeed. Gatsby changes his entire persona for a better, more sociable, image and status. He is constantly striving to be a more successful figure in society. Ever since he was a boy he put himself on a schedule with hopes for becoming a highly respected, well-known person. "He knew he had a big future in front of him. (Pg. 181)," his dad says about him. "Jimmy was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this…(Pg. 18)."

White is the other color symbolism interlaced into this novel. Where green only influenced one character, white has a wider range of influence on the characters. This color symbolizes one thing, a façade, but it appears in every character. For example, Daisy is always seen wearing white, which gives her and innocent naive appearance. It is as though she uses that as an excuse for when she does something ridiculous or childish, making it seem like she does not know any better. In reality, she knows exactly what she does but just doesn't care. She uses this little princess image and her money to hide her biased, snobbish, and conceited view of herself and her lifestyle. "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy--they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together…(Pg. 187-188)."

Another character that hides behind the white symbolic façade is Jordan Baker. She also wears white quite often. She acts as though she is superior to everyone around her. Her posture, her attitude, and even the things she says imply this arrogance. "She was extended full length at her end of the divan, completely motionless and with her chin raised a little as if she were balancing something on it which was quite likely to fall. If she saw me she me out of the corner of her eyes she gave no hint of it indeed I was almost surprised into murmuring an apology for having disturbed her by coming in. (Pg.1)." She portrays a bored and apathetic attitude about everything, which is part of her "I am too good for you" appearance. In reality, she just wants to be as respected and socially accepted as Gatsby. She is not willing to take responsibility for her actions and uses her image as a guard implying that she could not have possibly done anything immoral, much like Daisy. However, "She was incurably dishonest. She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage, and given this unwillingness I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep the cool insolent smile turned towards the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard jaunty body. (Pg. 6)."

Color symbolism is not very noticeable, yet it can tell a great deal about a story. In this case, the colors give the reader a look at the character's choices and the paths he or she could have chosen compared to the ones the character chose, which adds dimension to the story. The green the different choices Gatsby can make, whether it serves as a warning, an inspiration, or an urge to get ahead. The white symbolizes a mask, or a façade. It allows the characters to portray themselves as a whole other person and hide who they really are. This puts a piece of reality into the story, as everyone wears a white mask of some kind to hide his or her true self from the world. It is the unsubtle clues given to the reader that are fascinating and allow a person to relate to the characters.

Common Links between Arthur Miller and Steven Crane

Many authors, though from different times and writing periods, have similar elements in their literary works. It is interesting to look at the resemblances between writers and their stories. There are two books I have read in the past month that show these connections clearly. They are The Crucible by Arthur Miller and Maggie by Steven Crane. The Crucible and Maggie are analogous because they allude to the personal experiences of their respective authors, the native dialect of the characters in the stories is used, and both authors are concerned with the individual.

Arthur Miller used his experience being persecuted in the Communist witch hunt of the 150s to tell the story of the Salem Witch Hunt of the 160s. Like Miller, Crane used his experiences living in the Bowery to tell the story of a poor Irish girls downfall. Miller uses archaic words and expressions in parts of his tale, and Crane uses the Irish dialect of the Bowery in all of the dialogue. Both authors are concerned with the individual, but in different ways. Miller was a social dramatist, which means he dealt with the behavior of the individual and their various responses in different situations. This is shown in many ways, but one of the major ones is the girls reactions to being caught dancing in the woods. Abigail made up stories of bewitchment by the family slave, Tituba, while Betty pretended to be sick and unconscious when around adults. Crane believed that a person could not overcome their environment and was interested in the effects environment has on a persons life. The plot is basically centered around this part of the book, because although Maggie is a blossom in a mud puddle she still cannot escape her bad upbringing.

In the two books, The Crucible and Maggie, a few of these parallels are allusions to personal experiences of their authors, the characters native dialect is used, and the authors use their works to examine the individual. In the writing of this paper, not only did I see these comparisons and textual examples, I saw many more as well. One will find that authors tend to have certain similarities. Whether it is that these parallels are the key to being a great author, or if it is that the authors just have similar writing styles, I do not know. I can only say that all of these things and more help to bring the reader into the story and allow the avid reader to pick them out and take a look at what they see. In this case, I saw the aforementioned comparisons, and I will continue to search for more.Write my Essay on Common Links Between Arthur Miller and Steven Crane for me
