I. Introduction

Lead

Air pollution is a serious problem today. There are countless different pollutants that contribute to the pollution of our air. Air pollution is a growing problem. Though we have found solutions for many of our air pollution substances, it is not enough to compensate for all pollution around us. One big contributor to air pollution is lead.

Lead is a metal that is present in the environment mainly as a result of industrialization. It can be present in water, soil, but generally in air. Lead is useful for many things today and its use dates back to centuries ago. Although it has its advantages, it has more disadvantages. Lead contributes greatly to the problem of air pollution today. It is a persistent, bioaccumulative, and toxic chemical. Also, at one point, lead polluted water greatly. Since better filtering systems have been made, water pollution, in water pipes, caused from lead is rare now.

II. Main Information

Properties of Lead

Lead is extracted mainly from galena. It can be present as gas or solid (metal). Lead has several properties that make it unique; it is very malleable and can be hammered into any shape. It is a soft, bluish-white, dense metallic element. It can be very easily melted and joined. Lead has good corrosion resistance in most common environments. Lead's high density has been proved effective in weights. It's ductile and is relatively a poor conductor of electricity. The electrochemical properties of lead allow it to be used in storage batteries in all motor vehicles and for some back-up power supplies. Lead's atomic number is 8 and its atomic weight is 107.. Its melting point is 7.5°C and its boiling point is 1744°C.

Lead is used in roofing, window cames, kitchen, tableware, and ornamental uses for many centuries. It's also used as solders, ammunition, electroplating, electrical equipment, X-ray and nuclear shielding, specialty casting, cement glazes and stabilizer in plastics.

Causes of Lead Pollution

Lead is caused and released by things such as industrial plants, steel factories, and power plants. Leaded gasoline, at one point, contributed greatly to the cause of lead poisoning. But several years ago, it phased out, leaving lead emissions decreased by 8%. Today the leading cause of atmospheric lead pollution is metal processing. Among the largest lead toxins are automobile emissions that are discharged from fuel combustion in the automobile's motor. Also, recycling waste products causes the discharge of lead.

Effects on the Earth

An ecosystem is an ecological community, functioning with its unit. It is a system formed by the interaction of organisms with their physical environment. Lead effects our environment in several ways. It is a great pollutant to soil. Acid rain dissolves lead shot. As a result, dissolved lead is released into soil and sediment and can enter ground water and surface water. In 18, the U.S. EPA identified lead-based paint, point emitters, and leaded gasoline as the three sources of elevated soil-lead levels and suggested targeting these sources in reducing lead contamination in soil.

Lead also can be fatal if it enters a body of a human or an animal. Even small amount can be deadly.

Cycles

Lead is dangerous towards many natural cycles. The food cycles are often disturbed in the wildlife, due to lead pollution. An environment filled with wildlife animals, located near a motorway or factory, often have lead problems. For example, when a bird swallows or breathes lead, it will most likely die. A larger animal that feeds on it may die of starvation.

Also, water cycle is affected by it as well. Steel factories release lead dust, which usually falls to the ground or water. When it rains, that water may rain on a reservoir or another area used as a drinking source, getting into water pipes. Water pollution caused by lead today is rare, due to better filter systems.

Effects on Living Organisms

Lead can cause various illnesses to humans. The physical effects are anemia, pale or dry skin, headaches/stomachs, lead paralysis of bones and muscles, buzzing sound in the ear, dizziness and nephrosclerosis. Usually, lead gets into the human body through food, but sometimes through respiratory organs. The main lead pollutants in food are vegetables and medical herb that are usually grown near a motorway. The most affected organs in a human body are usually brain and nervous system, kidneys, blood, and the reproductive system of both males and females. Also, lead in a different form, is a possible carcinogen.

In pregnant women, lead poisoning can affect the developing of the fetus. In children, lead poisoning impairs their mental development and causes a small but measurable decrease in I.Q. Another example of lead exposure to children is lead deposited in the soil from leaded gasoline fumes along busy roadways. Children can ingest lead, as they play.

Lead can cause seizure, coma, or possibly death. It affects virtually every system in the body. Its mental affects are learning disabilities and behavioral problems. People are affected largely from the contamination of lead in food. Animals or cattle being fed vegetables that are contaminated with lead, enters the human body through food.

III. Conclusion

Possible Solutions

The problem of water pollution caused by lead has been solved. By installing filter systems or devices in all water pipes in a home, you can prevent any sort of water pollution caused by lead. Usually homes built after 10 already have filter devices installed. In order to prevent lead from entering you home, have air-refining systems through out your home. Do not enter you house with shoes on; shoes may carry lead dust. Also, you should be careful where they children play. Lead is a poisonous substance that unfortunately does not have many solutions.

Changing our method of decision making can be easy!

Right from the start, an opportunity to make a decision to enhance your decision making skills exists. Will you carry forth with the desire to enhance your skills for making better and faster decisions in your life? It is a simple yes or no answer with the hardest part consisting of you committing totally to becoming more successful. Sitting on the fence or saying I'll improve when he/she improves will not help you enhance your skills. Given this perspective and the desire to become the best at making decisions, you are half way to being more successful. The other half consists of the persistence and dedication necessary for implementing faster decision making skills as one of your habits. Here are some tips to help you increase your success in a fast and easy manner.

ØDo not make decisions that are not yours to make.

ØChoosing the right alternative at the wrong time is not any better than the wrong alternative at the right time, so make the decision while you still have time. Help with essay on Changing Can Be EasyØBe sure to choose based on what is right, not who is right.

ØConsider those affected by your decision. Whenever feasible, get them involved to increase their commitment.

ØRemember that not making a decision is a decision not to take action.

ØAs part of your decision making process, always consider how the decision is to be implemented.

ØOnce the decision has been made, don't look back. Be aware of how it is currently affecting you and focus on your next move.

ØNever regret a decision. It was the right thing to do at the time. Now focus on what is right at this time.

ØDiscontinue prolonged deliberation about your decision. Make it and carry it through.

Pablo Casals was once asked by a reporter, "Sir, you are unquestionably the greatest cellist who ever lived. You are ninety-six years old, yet you are still practicing six hours a day. Why?" Casals responded, "Because I think I am beginning to make progress." With this type of attitude we can do anything! As Robert Kennedy said, "Most people look around and ask why? I ask why not?" With determination we can challenge ourselves to stretch and become more than we were just moments ago. Four steps to help us re-program ourselves for success are as follows.

1.Recognize your blocking behaviors.

.Release the blocking behaviors.

.Give yourself permission to change.

4.Re-program yourself.

People come from all walks of life. Their paths are decorated and paved from the decisions they have made thus far in their lives. Having this awareness tucked in the back of our minds will help facilitate our understanding of how people make decisions this includes ourselves. Sometimes we carry with us habits we are unaware of. But these habits will have an influence on our ability to be successful. Some of these habits may be barriers to decision making such as

1.Worrying about what others think.

.Letting others decide.

.Outcome is uncertain.

4.Fear of failure.

5.Thinking there is a perfect solution.

6.Too much perceived responsibility and accountability.

7.Wanting perfect information.

8.Thinking you can please everyone.

.Thinking the problem will resolve itself.

10.Having too many other problems.

11.Not recognizing that a problem exists.

Have you considered yourself to be an intrapreneur? An intrapreneur is a person who exhibits entrepreneurial characteristics but with-in the corporate arena. There is a trap that some entrepreneurs find themselves stuck in and any intrapreneur would be wise to learn from Getting wedded to an idea and sticking with it too long. Don't marry a single idea. Remember ideas are the currency of entrepreneurs, so play with many ideas. Attachment to one way or idea can be crippling to success. Allowing detachment and blending of many ideas to comprise the ultimate successful idea is not only key but wise. Part of maintaining an unstuck attitude is reflected well in this Chinese proverb "If the mountain won't bend, then you bend the road, and if the road won't bend, then you bend yourself."

"A man always has two reasons for the things he does a good one and the real one." Nicely stated by J. P. Morgan and so powerfully true. What are your reasons for the decisions you made? Are the decisions focused on the success for the company and all the people who are counting on its success for their livelihood? Be sure to go beyond thinking of just employees and their families obtaining their livelihood remember all the people who count on the supply of oxygen they purchase from Air Products to help them breathe each day. The impact of our decisions reach farther than these four walls. At the end of the day, it is solely up to you to decide and commit yourself to improving the process of how you make decisions, thus contributing to the collective group's success for improving decision making in the organization. Raymond Holliwell states, "Desire creates the power." All you need is that desire and commitment to being more successful because without it these two events could happen under your watch…

"While the doctors consult, the patient dies." Old English Proverb and

"While two dogs fight for a bone, a third dog runs away with it." proverb

Remember "there is no right way to do the wrong thing." The only person who facilitates your changing is yourself. Breaking through the barriers to become more of who you can be is your responsibility and yet everyone around you benefits from your progress. Share with everyone your full potential by your actions. We are all watching either consciously or unconsciously it's a fact of life. As you embark on enhancing your decision making skills, consider John Heider's profound thought captured in his quote, "When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be."

On April 6, 117, the United States officially declared war on Germany and entered itself into the Great War. The Great War, or World War I, had begun in Europe during the summer of 114 when a Serbian student terrorist assassinated the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungry. Many Americans had not even heard of Austria-Hungry, but it would soon change their lives and bring them into the most destructive war the world has ever seen. National pride and the ally system almost instantly drew several European nations to conflict. Eventually, the US under Woodrow Wilson would go from neutral, to joining the front lines, and eventually contributing to peace after the war.

On the morning of June 8, 114, while traveling in a motorcade through Sarajevo, a Serbian terrorist assassinated the Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungry. As a result, Austria-Hungary decided to punish Serbia and declared war on them. Russia got involved as it had an agreement to protect Serbia, and began to mobilize it armies. Germany, who at the time, were allies with Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia and France as a counter. Soon after Germany invaded Belgium to attack France, England joined France and the Great War had begun.

Theodore Roosevelt's peacekeeping attempts in the first decade of the century had little effect among the European nations. A growing sense of nationalism and pride brought European nations to turn minor disputes into worldwide problems. National rivalry between Great Britain and Germany, led to military competition and a race to build bigger and better battleships. As European nations armed, they create treaties and alliances. Despite peace conferences and international agreements, many promoted by the United States, the balance of power rested on the alliances that formed.

Many Americans thought the 0th century was "going to be an age of treaties rather than an age of war." However, when war broke out in Europe, many Americans changed their views. The United States initial stance on the war was to remain neutral. President Woodrow Wilson said that the United States must remain "fit and free", and so the United States declared a policy of neutrality on August 4, 114. The reason for neutrality was that many people believed that the US could stay out of the situation and remain unaffected. Help with essay on American Relections of World War I: The Great WarAlthough some felt the United States should stay out of European affairs, many others sympathized with the allied cause. Within the first few months, it became apparent that the United States was forced to take action. Great Britain began an illegal naval blockade and began seizing American ships carrying goods to European nations. Wilson surrendered and gave control of the sea over to Great Britain. Due to this, trade with the Central Powers almost stopped and trade with Allies more than tripled. The United States also began to loan enormous amounts of money to Allied powers. America had now started to move away from neutrality and towards the Allies. In response to Great Britain's naval blockade, Germany announced a U-Boat blockade of the British Isles. Germany then announced that they would fire upon even neutral ships. A month after the U-Boat blockade, Germany sank a British liner killing 10 people. One month later on May 7, 115, Germany sank the Lusitanian, killing 1,00 people, 18 of which were Americans. The final event that led America to war was the Zimmerman Note. This was an intercepted telegram from the German foreign secretary, Arthur Zimmermann, to the German minister in Mexico. The note told the German minister in Mexico that if war broke out, he was to offer Mexico it had lost to the United States in 1848. In return, Mexico would have to join the war as a Central power. This was released to the public on March 1, 17. Many American's demanded war on Germany, but it was not declared until April , 117, after Germany sank five American ships.

Wilson's 14 points aimed to create peace between all nations. His points freed nations and settled national boundaries. Many of his points were accepted into the peace treaty, but not all. He was forced to agree that Germany should pay reparations, lose much of its oil and coal rich territory and admit guilty for the cause of the war.

On June 8, 11, the Versailles Treaty was signed ending World War I. There were many terms in the treaty, and most aimed at punishing Germany. The peacemakers carved the new countries of Austria, Hungary, and Yugoslavia, created from Austria-Hungary Empire. In addition to this, several other new countries were created. At the end of the war, Germany left with nothing, suffered an enormous war debt, and the country quickly moved into depression. Germany was also forced to pay $56 billion, to Allied nations, which in Germany's view, made it less of a peace treaty and more of Germany's punishment. Germany's African colonies had been divided among the Allies and key parts of German land were given away. Due to the terms specified in the treaty, resentment would brew within Germany, leading to the next world war.

The US also demonstrated its role as a peacekeeper by trying to bring peace between the battling nations. We even see that today as the US continues its role and keep peace in the world with incidents like Kosovo and the Persian Gulf.

World War I occurred because of a European incident, the terrorist assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Nevertheless, it brought America right up to the front lines. Because of that, America changed its role internationally and as a world power.

Hist 111 paper 1

Both Herodotus and Thucydides are historian that recorded history. But the way they collected their data and when they collected are different. Herodotus relied heavily on personal accounts because no one had written anything down yet. While Thucydides relied on personal observation or statements from others present at event. Because of Herodotus writes about events that happened years before he is born and uses mythological references, some people could say that is evidence isn't believable. That's why I think Thucydides writings are more credible than Herodotus.

Cheap University Papers on Herodotus versus Thuyclides

Herodotus is called the father of history because he was the first person to write down historical events. He wanted to preserve the memory of the past of the Greeks e Orientals and to show how the two came to conflict.. He traveled all throughout eastern Mediterranean collecting stories and visiting famous places. He wasn't very concise, he wanted to present as much information about the Persian War and other events as he could. His writing weren't very organized either. He would begin talking about the Persian War and the start explaining the origins of the conflict by references to mythological prehistory.

Thucydides on the other hand is really into getting the facts straight. Unlike Herodotus who started writing about the past, Thucydides started writing about the present and the future. Also unlike Herodotus who's writings were scattered, Thucydides writings were in chronological order events, split between summer and winter months. Thucydides also provided numerous interjections of his personal analysis of events. He gives his reasoning as why the Peloponnesians and the Athenians began warring he provides contrast between the Athenian culture and the Peloponnesian culture which he considered to be the primary cause for the start of the war. The conservative, oligarchic Peloponnesians feared the advent us, daring of the democratic Athenians (The Causes of the Peloponnesian War, p66). Even though Thucydides tried to keep all of his factual as possible, some of his writing were made up. He attended speeches and could not remember everything, so he made up what should have been said.

Herodotus is regarded as a as the father of history but because some of the things he did makes him less credible than Thucydides. First he wasn't present at the events he writes about. Even a lot of history is recorded this way it doesn't compare in creditability to something that is written first. Second he incorporates myths in his writing. Because of this you can't tell what is real and what is myth. Even though Thucydides sometimes made up endings to speeches, the way he went about getting his information is more accurate historical account than Herodotus.

Cisco Implementation of ERP

Cisco

1. The ERP implementation process provides several examples as to why Cisco is Information Age company as opposed to an Industrial Age company. Although Cisco's ERP vendor selection was driven by the manufacturing groups needs, this does not qualify them as an Industrial Age company proving that even a manufacturing focused company can still categorize itself as an information age company because of factors such as structure, resource allocation, and communication across functional groups.

One key difference in the two types of companies is structure. In Industrial Age companies, a hierarchy was the dominant business model with power very centralized among top management. While John Morgridge, CEO, 'maintained a centralized functional organization,' at Cisco, the structure of the ERP task force team was nearly the opposite of a hierarchy and in fact drew key people out of many business units. The leaders of the project, Peter Solvik and Randy Pond collaborated with all levels of management from Board Members, to Vice Presidents to Directors of business units to team managers to create a team that would evaluate, select, refine and implement the project. So although the overall company structure was reflective of an Industrial Age company (according to the CEO's observations) The ERP project team and the way it was comprised was more representative of an Information Age company, which was decentralized with authority and power distributed across many different units and down several lines of command as a result increased communication capabilities.

Second, the way in which the Cisco solves its ERP problem is indicative of an Information Age company. Industry Age companies characteristically stood very much alone and relied on internal support for technology and improvements. They were limited in growth and scope by their own competencies and capabilities. But, in the Information age, economies of scale are achieved by networking, sharing, and looking at other firms' core competencies to achieve more value. Outsourcing in the Information Age allows a firm, like Cisco, to have access to better, faster, cheaper in this case being an ERP solution. So, by outsourcing first the firm that evaluates their needs (KPMG) and then determining that Oracle would provide a new ERP system, Cisco shows that they are not an Industrial Age company. An Industrial Age company would have been limited by their own capabilities but now, companies like Cisco realize what their competencies are and look elsewhere for solutions to problems that fall outside this realm.

Finally, the testing stages that Cisco went through to implement its new ERP system show that it is an Information Age company because of the process of evaluating information to make changes rather than being constricted to the original implementation which would seem more apparent in an Industrial Age company. The ability to document, use, and make changes from the communications from the testing teams would not have been done in an Industrial Age company because of the lack of communication across functional teams. The ERP implementation went through several stages, with changes made and inputs given by many people from many departments.

. The source of IT solution, the amount of money and the resources allocated to make the IT decisions, and the placement of IT implementation on the list of company goals all are proof points as to how important IT is to Cisco's strategy.

IT proves to be so important to Cisco's strategy that they turn to Oracle for solutions. Rather than fixing their current UNIX-based software, Cisco's 'significant growth prospects convinced' the CIO that they needed a change and they look to outsource to another company that specializes in IT solutions. Although no company had ever solved a problem the size of Cisco's, IT solution provided by the outside vendor needed to be in line with the growth (80% annually at that point) that Cisco was experiencing and projecting.

The amount of money spent on the Oracle package selected also proves the importance of IT to Cisco's growth strategy. Not only did Cisco 'pull people out of business that they absolutely did not want to give up' for the first round of developing an ERP project team, they went back a second time and 'again the team sought out the best for inclusion in the project.' This shows that Cisco dedicated its best employees and took them away from their 'real jobs' to be part of the IT department for a while therefore reallocating is most valuable resources. The amount of money ($15 million) that the team asked for was almost frightening to ask for. It would not have been requested if IT were not critical.

Third piece of evidence that IT is one of the most, if not the most, important contributions to Cisco's Strategy is the placement of the ERP Implementation on the Company Goal List. The first year, it was in the top 7 company wide goals. By year two, it was the number one priority, as 'ERP project status became the number one agenda item for weekly executive staff meetings.'

. Pete Solvik's role as CIO was actually more similar to a CEO as he had to manage all areas of the company as they pertained to IT. Rather than just look after the Information department of Cisco, Solvik was responsible for the finance, marketing, manufacturing, etc areas response to the new ERP system. Solvik approached the problem of the ERP implementation with caution, but as soon as the failures in the current system were apparent, the approach became much more aggressive. Managing this project involved managing consultants, outsourced vendors, and internal teams of managers and superiors. He took a very decentralized approach to the role as evident in his choice of team members.

The character of Sir Anthony Absolute is proud, somewhat grumpy, but still compassionate and comically gullible man. He likes to be in control but does not always necessarily succeed. As like many of the characters in 'The Rivals' Sir Anthony is a stereotype of men of that class that were found in society during the18th century e.g his views on women in society were sexist and had quite strong will and mind, believing strongly in discipline and respect for superiors. We see the different aspects of Sir Anthony through his interaction between his sly cunning son, Jack Absolute and Mrs Malaprop. He is very sure of himself and does not like to be proved wrong and when he is (usually by Jack) he reacts to it in rather a stroppy and childlike way. There are moments during the play that give the impression he is quite sleazy and seedy in moments of discussing Lydia Languish with his son. He is also seen to be a caring man and a good father.

We are first introduced to Sir Anthony in Act 1 Scene . In this scene we see him walk in with Mrs Malaprop into Lydia's dressing room. With his first line the audience are given a pretty good impression of the kind of beliefs and values he has; 'Ay, this comes of her reading' Shortly after he sums up how he feels about how young women should be brought up and is an example of his generalized view. He immediately blames Lydia's attitudes as a result of her reading, which in fact is true; 'all this is the natural consequence of teaching girls to read. Had I a thousand daughters, by heaven, I'd of sooner taught the black art as their alphabet!' his attitudes towards educating women are clear and so when delivering these lines, as they will be the first impression the audience get of him, I would do it with a slight muttering tone but sounding quite gruff. I would be slightly bent over and flap my arms around as if having one of his common rants using lots of pointing finger gestures towards Lydia whilst looking back and forth from Mrs Malaprop and upwards as if thinking with an impression of assurance.

Sir Anthony is seen trying to be quite controlling over Jack and when he chooses a wife for him he expects him to just obey and marry her but at first to his irritation jack is very inquisitive. When asked who the lady is Sir Anthony simply replies 'what's that to you sir?….she shall be as ugly as I choose' this show he feels that jack has little say in the matter and should just be grateful. I would want to display Sir Anthony's degree of frustration in the fact Jack is not just complying with his wishes. I would deliver the line sternly glaring into Jack's eyes whilst raising the eyebrows and again pointing an authoritative finger, maybe leaving no pause before continuing so not to give Jack a chance to answer. Jack answer's back which frustrates Sir Anthony even more, he reacts in quite a childish manner e.g blows thing out of proportion and is quite melodramatic; 'I'll disown you jack, I'll disinherit you!' these elaborate threats are the consequence of him not getting his way immediately. I would deliver these lines shaking my head and slowly rising in tone showing increasing anger as if winding him self up and over reacting. I would huff in between phrases.

We get the impression that Sir Anthony actually takes quite a fancy towards Lydia in quite a perverted way (which in those days was perfectly acceptable) in Act scene 1 where he is describing her vividly to Jack referring to her as 'blooming, love breathing seventeen' To demonstrate his over excited mood I would be restless and subtly rub my hands together whilst open eyed with a big grin on my face looking at jack. I would then deliver the lines rapidly showing too much enthusiasm. His delight is obviously shown by the fact that every time he names a part of her body that he is about to describe he repeats it; 'Such eyes, such eyes!….her cheeks, her cheeks!….her lip's,O, Jack her lips!' this very strongly suggests he has paid particular attention to these areas and has thought about a lot. When delivering the description I would want to give the impression he is reliving the moment he first saw her and so I would look upwards and out to the audience slightly squinting. He is often made to look like a fool by his devious witty son Jack and usually it is without him knowing. There are many examples throughout the play when Jack makes him look silly acting on his gullibility or his hypercritical nature. When this happens he often gets frustrated as it is usually whilst he is trying to control Jack and bark orders at him. The best example of this is when he is angry at the fact that Jack wants to go against his will and then later on in that scene after his line 'To please my father! Zounds, not to please my father…O my father! Yes yes, if my father had desired it, that's quite a different matter' Jack makes him look like he did exactly what Jack is doing at his age. He's only way of dealing with it is to reject the comment and move on.
