Engels was born in Barmen, Germany. He came from a wealthy Protestant family. Engels from a young age developed a quest for knowledge and an inquisitive mind. He was influenced by the works of the radical German poet Heinrich Heine and the German philosopher Hegel. But as he grew older Engels felt that he had to make clear his own thoughts and beliefs. Therefore, in 18 he began writing on literary and philosophical topics for a number of publications. In 184 Engels was converted to Communist beliefs by the German Socialist Moses Hess. This change of beliefs sparked and interest that changed his life and the life's of many others to come.

Engels, as a young man was sent to England to help manage his father's cotton-factory in Manchester. On his arrival and in deed for the years to come Engels was shocked by the condition of the city. He found that the location of the working-peoples quarter and the treatment of the working class by their employers was unsatisfactory. These substandard conditions lead him to write and account of the conditions in a book entitled 'Condition of the Working Classes in England' which he wrote in 1844.

Engels believed that the manner in which the city (Manchester) was built was peculiar and even insulting. The city was built "so that a person may live in it for years, and go in and out daily without coming into contact with a working-peoples quarter or even with workers, that is, so long as he confines himself to his business or to pleasure walks" 1. He believed that the design of the city encouraged a feeling of segregation between the classes. The city shut out the working class from the main roads, in order to conceal anything that might offend the eyes of the bourgeoisie. The concealment of suffering and poor conditions only assists the deterioration of the working class's situation. The fact that a person can live for years in a city without encountering the neglected working class only encourages ignorance. When the men with power (the bourgeoisie) don't know the truth about their own city, when they don't know the suffering and the substandard living conditions of the working class, they have no way of improving the city and improving living conditions. But what is astonishing is that the separate living quarters "arise chiefly from the fact, that by unconscious tacit agreement, as well as the out-spoken conscious determination" 1. What sort of a society creates a city with the conscious determination to isolate the working class from the other classes?

The treatment of the working class by the government and by their employer is repulsive. During Engels stay in Manchester all social welfare for the working class whether in money or in previsions was halted. Immediately after this workhouses were built for the unemployed members of the working class. The working conditions inside the workhouses were dreadful and the policy for these workhouses was such as to "frighten away everyone who has the slightest prospect in life without this form of public charity"1. The government took away social welfare for the unemployed and replaced it with redundant workhouses with substandard conditions. The food in the workhouses was inedible. In fact the food was so bad that many workers would commit a small crime to get them into jail, as the food and living conditions were better in jail. The workhouse is in fact a jail of sort. If a worker did not finish his designated task he would get nothing to eat, if he wanted to go outside for air he would have to ask permission also to diminish individualism the workers wore a uniform. To prevent the workers labor from competing with the companies outside, the workers were asked to perform useless tasks. The men broke stones, the women, children and aged men picked oakum, for an unknown reason. The sadistic English government decided that rather than give social welfare to the unemployed they would lock them up in workhouses with bad living conditions. What sort of a country takes away social welfare and replaces it with redundant dangerous work?

After Engels published 'Condition of the Working Classes in England' he began contributing to a radical journal called 'Franco-German Annals' that was being edited by Karl Marx in Paris. Later in 1844 Engels met Marx they shared each others views on capitalism. Marx and Engels decided to work together. Together they wrote the 'The Communist Manifesto' which was published in 1848. Engels and Marx thought of Communism as the necessary reform for the social problems in England.

'The Communist Manifesto' summarized the nature of the communist society that would be established by the proletariat, a society where the problems of 1th century England were solved. They believed that "the history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" and that if classes were eradicated then all struggle and conflict would cease. Engels and Marx proclaimed that in England property is already non-existent for nine tenths of the population. Therefore, to do away with private property would make all equal and assist the proletariats who make up nine tenths of the population. They said that the only men achieving anything out of the work that the lower class accomplishes are the bourgeois. The working class are given small amounts of money and are treated as inferiors. Communism, by placing all people as equals allows social integration with all people. Communism gives people material objects but allows no one to indulge in excess.

They believed that people should remain agricultural to reverse the effects of the industrial revolution. Problems like crime, pollution, overcrowding and poor living conditions would be fixed. Engels and Marx saw that the bourgeois took advantage of the proletariats. They thought that the problem of England and the civilized world and came to the conclusion that communism would solve all of these problems. They concluded by saying "Let the ruling classes tremble at a Communistic revolution. The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Working men of all countries, unite!".

The American dream is made up of one thing and one thing only, hopes. Hopes are what every person in the world has. Whether it is to be rich, successful, or just to have a desire to accomplish anything. No one goes throughout life not hoping for something because if not one person did this then the world would not be what it is today. To understand the American Dream in one's eyes, one must take into regard how Americans picture success, hopes and desire.

Hopes, are what we do not have in our possession, it is what is wanted or needed. Many people hope for money or more money than what they already have. For example, a poor person hopes to have money so that he may buy things he needs for instance shelter, clothes, food, shoes or whatever else is needed. A Rich person may already have money and what is needed, but may want more than what is already there such as, more cars, shoes, a bigger house, and clothes. I hear hopes every day at school, I hope I get that new sweater at the Gap, I hope I get a part in the school play. Hopes are not always recognized but they are there in our everyday lives. We hope that we can move on from what happened on September 11, 001, and live our daily lives to the fullest.

Another, hope is for success. Success is a personal satisfaction, shown in many different ways. One persons success could have been to conquer a goal like earning an A in math or the purchase of a new car. Someone else's achievement could have been to get a new job or to buy a new home and start a new life there. I would like to succeed in basketball so I could go to a four-year, division one college and become a famous player for Tennessee State. There are many ways to accomplish success throughout life.

Buy cheap American Dream term paper

Along with hopes and success there has to be a desire to work for what you want. To win the championship game, handwork and a desire to beat the other team must be put forth. Desiring to buy a new computer or a big screen television set, or even food, you work for it. Many people have desires to have a family or to start a business and if people did not we would not have many the things we have now. The word desire means to long or hope. I have the long to be and actress and to become a star, who makes a lot of money as well as live in Hollywood. That is my desire.

On the other hand to some, the American Dream is made up of much more than material things, but to me its made up of a good portion of material things. I'm not saying people don't have a hunger to be free and be able to choose what religion they decide on. The dream signifies a more individual experience and meaning. There is not just one dream to everyone because people are different and live differently, meaning their outlook would be unalike.

Essay on Pleasantville (movie)

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Essay on Pleasantville (movie). What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality Essay on Pleasantville (movie) paper right on time.

Out staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Essay on Pleasantville (movie), therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Essay on Pleasantville (movie) paper at affordable prices !

Directors use many different literary techniques to provide more of an image for the viewers. These techniques, in most cases, make the movies much more enjoyable for people who want more than just a story line. For some people they don't look to far into the movie and just enjoy it anyway. In the movie Pleasantville there are many literary techniques used such as@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Allusion is a well-known reference to the past and is very evident in the movie Pleasantville. There are three types of allusion evident in the movie. They are historical, biblical, and mythological. A director would use this in a movie to provide another picture and reference to give a clearer meaning to the story line. For example the book burning, many years ago the Nazis burned books to cleanse the country of"un-German" thoughts. In Pleasantville they burned to books to cleanse the town of unpleasant thoughts and to keep the town the same as it has always been. This is a very well-known reference to the past and gives a much deeper meaning to the book burning scene in the movie. The story of Apollo and Artemis is a story of Greek mythology that can be compared to Jen and David. Jen is said to be kind of an older twin sister To David which is similar to the story of Apollo and Artemis. Apollo is similar to David because they were both truthful and knowledgeable. Jen is like Artemis in a few ways. One way is that Jen is older than David just like Artemis was to Apollo. Both Jen and Artemis had beauty that they could use to their advantage. Another story of Greek mythology that can be compared to David, is the story of Prometheus. Prometheus and David both wanted to make men more knowledgeable by teaching and introducing them to new things. A biblical example, which also can be interpreted as symbolism, is the story of Adam and Eve.

Symbolism, something concrete standing for something abstract, is used throughout the movie Pleasantville. One example of symbolism in the movie is also part of the turning point as well. After Jen teaches her boyfriend about sex, a rose changes color from black and white to red. This can symbolize many things, such as a new beginning, change, and loss of virginity. Color, the main idea of the movie, symbolizes a few different things. Change in Pleasantville originates from David and his sister Jen. Often the people gain new knowledge or feel new emotions to change to vibrant colors. An example is when David stands up to the bully and when Jen enjoys a book. There are many things that symbolize change throughout the movie Pleasantville. Some examples are the first rain and lightning storm, first sight of color, and the tree burning. The color changing also represents individualism because they do something different from most of the still black and white people. The red apple that is bitten into by David in Lover's Lane can also symbolize sin and is similar to what happened to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Analogy is a likeness between things in some circumstances or effects, when the things are otherwise entirely different. It is used to enlighten the viewer's mind allowing them to notice things that are well hidden. The movie Pleasantville can be compared to many movies like The True Man Show, To Kill a Mocking Bird, and the Matrix. In both The Trueman Show and the Matrix there is an unreal world and a real world. In The Trueman Show the unreal world is made to be perfect just like that of Pleasantville, where the weather is nice and sunny every day. In real world, though, there is much dysfunction and you can never count on the weather. Also both of the movies unreal worlds follow a drawn out and continuos routine, which in the end is totally destroyed. Pleasantville can also be compared with To Kill a Mocking Bird. The scene from both movies is the courtroom, the blacks are separated from the colors and the minority group is in most cases treated worse than the other. So in both cases the colored people were on the top floor of the courtroom where it would be more uncomfortable and hot.

Magic realism is evident in both The Matrix and Pleasantville. In both these movies the characters do things that defy realism while the movie is still based in the real world. The movies do not go as far as making it into a fantasy world they try and give the viewer a sense that what happens to the characters might have a chance of happening in the world today. In the Matrix the characters can travel in and out of the real and unreal world. When they are in the unreal world, though it supposed to be much the same as the real, they can perform physically impossible feats and do things that could never be done in reality. While they are doing this you still get a sense that this could actually be true and could happen in the world today. The Pleasantville directors do the same thing, they take the real world today and add fantasy and magic.

Irony can be defined as incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. One example of irony in the movie is when Jen wants to stay in Pleasantville and David wants to go back home to the real world. This is ironic because Pleasantville was David's perfect world yet he changed it and in the end, left and went back to his dysfunctional family. Another example of irony from the movie is when the mayor is yelling to everyone in the courtroom that he will never change to color from black and white. Then in doing so turns color because he never yells. He always wants to keep things pleasant and peaceful and yelling and anger was a new emotion for him.

Movies like Pleasentville are full of literary techniques, all these techniques make the movie much more enjoyable to watch and make it into more than just another kill people and blow things up movie, though there is nothing wrong with those kind of movies. This movie also is probably way more into symbolism than most because they even incorporate changes in color.

Please note that this sample paper on Essay on Pleasantville (movie) is for your review only. Changes are natural part of our lives. They provide us with experiences that enable us to enrich ourselves. They offer us new ways of viewing and facing challenges. They also help us in visualizing our dreams and goals and in thinking of ways to attain them. Indeed, changes define a person. Since I have entered high school, many changes have happened to me that have greatly contributed to my well - being. Among these, two have helped me prepare for life in and after college. The two significant events have caused changes in myself, and these are living in a dormitory and becoming the editor in chief of our school paper.

Living in a dormitory. Have you ever slept in a hotel room? Then you probably know how it feels like to stay in a place where many other people before you have slept, ate, and bathed, too. It doesn't stop there. Imagine that you will have to extend your stay due to some delay in your business transaction. And, suddenly all of the hotels in that area get filled up and that you'll have to share your room with someone else. You would have to get along with each other so that there won't be conflicts in using the bathroom or when it comes to one another's schedule. Maybe this is already getting too far but at least, you already have a picture of what life in a dorm is like.

It doesn't stop with adjusting to your roommate's habits. You would also have to get along with your other dorm mates in tackling matters such as noise, garbage management and using shared properties such as the building's kitchen, refrigerator and television. Sometimes, the most trivial matters can cause misunderstandings between/among dorm mates like not listening to what he/she is telling you or telling them to back off or keep away from you if you have to study.

Dorm life sharpens your wits. You always have to be on your guard in case someone enters the dorm and starts stealing your things or when a fire breaks out. It helps you in making decisions. Definitely, you will still have to consult your parents regarding major matters but when it comes to everyday struggles and the final say on things, you are really in command because you are on your own.

Being the editor in chief. Have you ever wondered how an agile acrobat maintains his grace and composure despite distractions? The title editor in chief sounds great, and the job demand is really great! It is indeed a great balancing act leading and guiding co-workers, getting support from school officials and staff, mobilizing and inspiring writers to act and interact, pushing people to work based on schedule of activities.

But life is really like that and instead of looking at the negative, I prefer to look at the positive side. I am simply happy when I hear reactions from readers and I see students reading the finished product of the group's concerted efforts.

Changes are natural part of our lives that should be embraced and cherished, for they will define who we are and what we would become in the years to come.

Wilfred Owen was an officer in the British Army during the times of World War One whereby he deeply opposed the intervention of one nation into another as he believed that sufferings and pain would be set upon the innocent and the helpless ones of both countries. The harsh and negative-to-the-extreme language used may also be due to he being angry at the moment when he was writing the poem.

This poem sparks off at the scene where soldiers are brutally killed by gas bombs in the night as they walk towards their " distant rest ". It is said that Owen composed this poem during his World War I experience, however there is not enough information in the poem to support this. He wrote this anti-war poem to convey his idea or opinion of the horrors of war and death and that war is not worth it, as he speaks against the old lie perpetuated across the world Sweet and fitting it is to die for ones country, exposing the shallowness of the assumption behind this Latin phrase. Owen's main target audience is Jessie Pope, a popular children's writer who glorified the dying for your country in war as a patriotic and honourable act. His poem explains how the British press and public also comforted themselves with the fact that, terrible that this was, all the young men dying in the war were dying noble, heroic deaths. Therefore he also wishes to target this poem at the naïve British civilians at home and everybody else in the world, hoping to bring public awareness that war is hell, not a haven for honour and patriotism.

Emotion-wise, the predominant mood of the poem is negative. Pessimistic, solemn, morbid, grim and angry are some of the major moods present. There is also a change in mood throughout the poem whereby the words used become stronger and harsher from the beginning of the poem to the end of it whereby rhythm movement plays a part too (dealt later on). Through dehumanization and desensitization, the mood changes metaphorically, from white to red, white symbolizing grim and red as in anger. The feelings the poet wishes the readers to have are disgust, shock, horror, a sense of revulsion and sick. Owen wanted to throw the war in the face of the reader to illustrate how vile and inhumane war really is. He achieved this through vivid imagery and compelling metaphors that I would later deal with. Another one of the main emotions that a reader would have is sympathy for the soldiers who are suffering in agony and pain. At first glance, one would probably think that the poem is a bit too exaggerated but upon looking deeper, one would actually realize that it is not the slightest bit exaggerated at all.

Moving on to the craftsmanship of the poem, the poet utilizes a irregular structure in this inverted Shakespearean and Petrachan sonnet (8 and 6 scheme in the first two stanzas and a and 1 scheme in the last two stanzas) , whereby the ABAB structure of the rhyme scheme supports the sonnet like the structure. Sonnets have been

Cheap College Papers on Poem Analysis of Dulce

well-known to be used for poets to express love however this sonnet here is shocking and offending to readers. This clearly shows that the poet's deliberate and ironic use of a sonnet to convey the shock and horror of war and death is highly effective. The intent fracturing of the sonnet structure mirrors the shattering of the "old lie". Before moving on to language, I would like to add another point, which is diction. Owen uses words like cursed in we cursed through sludge. Now, he could have said, walked instead of "cursed" but by using cursed, we know that the advancing was hard and that the soldiers were struggling at their wits' end, desperately unhappy and exhausted. Another obvious evidence of victims being flung into the wagon reveals the urgency and occupation with fighting. The only thing they can do is, toss him into a wagon. The fact one word can add to the meaning of the poem so much shows how the diction of this poem greatly affects its effectiveness. Language-wise, it is not appropriate to the readers as it is offending and harsh to the readers but it is highly effective in serving its purpose. Owen capitalizes greatly on the language by using strong metaphors and similes like "old beggars under sacks", describing the soldiers being so tired they have been brought down to the level of beggars who have not slept in a bed for weeks. These comparisons illustrate the point so vividly that they increase the effectiveness of the poem. Imagery plays a major role in the effectiveness of bringing out the main meaning of the poem as it evokes the emotions of a person to cause him to feel sick. The phrase Come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs can be disturbing and offending to think about as it vividly describes the soldier on the verge of death. " Drunk with fatigue" graphically portrays the picture of these exhausted soldiers, so tired that they ignore the sounds of dropping shells. The movement of the poem ranges from each stanza with stanza one bring slow thus mirroring the fatigue of the soldiers, stanza two being fast with very short syllables to mirror the ecstasy of fumbling as the soldiers tried to put on their masks in time. The third stanza is slow with long syllables and the fourth stanza is slow too, resembling reflections and warnings made by the poet to the reader. Onomatopoeia like "gargling", alliteration and assonance are also used to bring out the feeling the poet wants. These are some of the sound types used in the poem.

In summary, the poem is very successful as a work of art, being unsophisticated and crude, extremely effective as an anti-war poem, making war seem absolutely horrid and revolting, just as the author wanted it to. Owens use of exact diction and vivid figurative language emphasizes his point, showing that war is terrible and devastating. Furthermore, the utilization of extremely graphic imagery adds even more to his argument against the old lie that it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country and that in reality the soldiers were dying obscene and terrifying deaths.

The play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare includes many themes that are not only relevant to audiences of the past but also relevant to audiences of today. The most relevant theme in the play is the effect of ambition on people. There are many examples of this theme presented in the play. Some of the other major themes that are presented in Macbeth are the conflict between good and evil, that appearances often hide reality so things aren't always what they seem and Reversal of values "fair is foul and foul is fair".

The most powerful theme that is portrayed throughout the play is the effect of ambition on people. Both Macbeth and Banquo are shown to be ambitious right from the beginning of the play, but their ambitions were very different towards the witch's prophecies. The witch's prophecies told of Macbeth becoming king and Banquo's sons becoming kings in the future. When Banquo heard this he just laughed it off and thought nothing of it. Banquo stayed true to what he believed in unlike Macbeth who was affected by the prophecies. When the witches told Macbeth he would become king he was stunned and excited. Ambition took over him as he planned to get rid of anything that stood in his way. Lady Macbeth was also affected by the ambition as she pursued her goals, in the excitement of Macbeth becoming king, with greater determination then Macbeth. Lady Macbeth would often pressure Macbeth into going through with things that he was unsure about. This theme still has relevance today as many people can be often over taken by ambition. An example of someone in modern day that this applies to is some prime ministers/ presidents.

Another theme that is present in Macbeth is good and evil. Both good and evil are present in humans. Throughout the play it is often difficult to say whether the characters are good or evil. When Lady Macbeth pushed Macbeth to murder Duncan her 'evil' side was conquering his 'good' side, therefore 'evil' prevailed over 'good'. At times in the play it's obvious to say that Macbeth and his wife are evil, but throughout the whole play Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are going through a constant struggle between the good and the evil within themselves. Macbeth's good side is shown when he is described as being a brave man "brave Macbeth, well he deserves that name." Macduff is built up throughout the play as a figure of goodness, but as with the other characters, evilness soon prevails in him. As after the death of Duncan Macduff flees to England, abandoning his family leaving them defenceless.

The theme good and evil is still relevant to audiences today as human nature has not changed. Everyone has good and evil inside them. Most people are usually good but can turn evil when given the wrong information to go from. An example of good and evil in today's society is terrorists. Help with essay on MacbethAppearances often hide reality is also another major theme in Macbeth. This is when words are used in once sense while meaning the opposite in order to deliberately to mislead or confuse someone. This theme is presented in the play when Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth to "look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under't" (Act 1, scene 5, Lines 65-66). This is said just before king Duncan's arrival at their castle. Lady Macbeth wanted Macbeth to look sweet and innocent in order to hide his real motives of evil in his heart. Another instant in the play where this happens is when Macbeth says to Lady Macbeth "Away, and mock the time with fairest show, false face must hide what the false heart doth know" (Act 1, Scene 7, lines 81-8). By saying this he means that they should go to a feast with the king and pretend to be the king's loving subjects, even though they plan to kill him that night. By acting loving they are hiding their real motives and feelings from the king. This shows that appearances cannot always be trusted as the truth is often disguised or hidden.

Appearances often hide reality is relevant to audiences of the past and today as people will often act happy and put on an act when inside they are feeling a lot of pain. Humans often use their appearance to hide things they don't want others to see. This can be used as a protection method for the person. People use it in different circumstances to hide there motives from others and mislead them.

Another theme that is portrayed in Macbeth is reversal of values. This is represented early in the play when the witches state that "Fair is foul and foul is fair" (Act 1, scene 1, line 10) When Macbeth and Banquo first meet the witches they are horrified by their hideous appearances. After Macbeth started talking to the witches and hearing of their prophecies, Macbeth considered the witches to be 'fair' when in reality their intentions where 'foul'. Another example is how Macbeth advanced in life. Macbeth became the Thane of Glamis by his father Sinel's death, he became Throne of Cowder when the former namesake was executed for treason, and he was acclaimed king of Scotland after murdering the venerable Duncan. As one can see from this Macbeth's advances in life to 'fair' rolls were often come about by 'foul' means. Another example is from Duncan's statement "there's no art to the minds of construction in the face" (Act1, Scene 4, lines 11-1) Although Macbeth has the look of the friendly and kind host ('Fair') he is secretly plotting Duncan's death ('Foul').

As a result of reversal of values, what appears to be good or innocent to some of the characters in the play is often evil or corrupt. This leads to a great deal of confusion among the characters. The moral has been turned upside down and nothing is as it seems to be. This theme has relevance to contemporary audiences of today as well as the past as things aren't always what they seem. Things can seem to be good but often have hidden weaknesses that your not meant to see. Someone may seem to always have good meaning behind their actions when infact there good actions may be linked to evil.

One can see that the tragedy Macbeth has relevance to audiences of the past as well as contemporary audiences. Human nature has not changed so the themes represented in Macbeth still have relevance to people today. Many of the themes represented in Macbeth are portrayed in our ordinary day-to-day life.
