"The Quiet Man" to me represents a universal stereotype of Irish people and their way of life. Their customs and rituals are held with as much regard as the law itself. However to me "The Quiet Man" does not accurately describe the life of the Irish people in those times. Ford has created a film filled with nostalgia and sentimentality. A film, that was loved by all because it leaves out the harshness and sobering reality, that was Irish life all those years ago.

On first viewing "The Quiet Man" my initial reaction was one of sentimentality like many others. The simplistic way the people lived ruled by their customs and rituals that played such an important role in their lives. It portrays Ireland in that time as a time of "simple pastoral integrity" (Harlan Kennedy). The women are fiery, the people are backwards and it shows a community tightly bound together and insistent on knowing everyone else's business. Its scenes (such as the arrival of Sean into the train station) give way to comical "Irish" banter.

"D'ya see that road over there well don't take that one!"

The characters are developed with all the qualities of an "Irish" person. Michaeleen Oge Flynn takes the role of the shaughraun or matchmaker a typical Irish tradition. On Sean's first arrival in Ireland this man bombards him with questions showing the intrusiveness of Irish society. This combined with Mary Kate Danagher ;her fiery disposition, her red hair and her green eyes shows Ireland stereotypes at their best. But Ford has created a an imaginary world of festiveness and jolliness associated with being Irish. None of the struggles of the Irish people or how it really was is portrayed.

This leads to my change of mind about this film. It is nothing more then a cultural myth created in the mind of John Ford. He talks of an idyllic dreamland of an Ireland that never existed. While in certain ways, yes, he does show us some true facts about Irish life such as the custom of matchmaking and dowries, it's overall jolliness and festive feel of it's characters shows Ireland through rose tinted glasses.

The film also criticises Ireland quite harshly on it's beliefs, customs and traditions that was actually quite true of the time. It praises America subtly on its modern view on social issues such as marriage. For example our protagonist cannot understand how the powerful passion that he feels for Mary Kate is being stopped by mere tradition and custom. He is gently reminded by Michaeleen that

"This is Ireland, Sean, not America. Without her brother's consent, she couldn't and wouldn't"

While treating Ireland as an idyllic country Ford also manages to show America as the better country and with a tone of superiority.

To me John Ford is living an Irish dream of his through Sean Thorton. Like many others he has grasped the universal stereotype of Irish society and has ignored all realities of the true country. Even Roddy Doyles "The Commitments" can be seen as a more accurate view of Irish life. While I would like to believe that Fords view on Irish society of that time was true, it is not. I think that while he made a film based on sentimentality and nostalgia, he would have been better off to show the true Ireland as it was.

The general psychological subject area of this study is social influence.

This can be defined as "the process by which an individual's attitudes, beliefs or behaviours are modified by the presence or actions of others" (Saks & Krupat 188).

There are several types of social influence but this piece of research will be investigating conformity in particular and, more specifically, gender.

Conformity is referred to as "a change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or imagined group pressure" (David Myers 1). Do my essay on Conformity in gender CHEAP !

Research into conformity dates as far back as 50 B.C. with Aristotle's writings on social influences and persuasion. However, experimental studies did not begin until the twentieth century with Floyd Allport (14).

Participants were required to judge the pleasantness of a set of odours, alone and then in small groups. Allport found that their judgements after the group discussion, approached the mean of their group and concluded that they conformed in attempt to be accepted by the others.

A study similar to that of Allport's and the basis for this research is that of Jenness' (1). Individual students were asked to estimate the number of beans in a bottle and then later placed in groups to discuss and come to a group conclusion. Jenness observed that when asked for a second judgement, participants made a distinct shift towards the group estimate.

Psychologists also believe that individual differences may play a role in conformity. Crutchfield's (155) study consisted of participants drawn mainly from the business sector and the military. They were tested for several qualities, some of which included intelligence, leadership ability and ego strength. He found that those who had scored highly in these, displayed lower levels of conformity.

Crutchfield's findings, therefore, seem to suggest that there is a conforming type of personality but there has been no substantial evidence to support this theory.

A meta-analysis of past studies into conformity carried out by Eagly & Carli (181) showed that women conformed more than men. It was suggested that these gender differences in conformity may have been as a result of typical social roles. Men are generally perceived to occupy positions of higher status and power and hence tend to be more exerting whereas women are seen to be more accepting (Eagly & Wood 185).

However, later research by Eagly (187) did not reflect similar findings to past experiments but rather seemed to show that there was in fact little significant difference in the rates of conformity in either gender. Researcher bias may have been introduced here due to the occurence of expectation effects whereby the researcher ( female) is deeply committed to acheiving a particular outcome and so could have affected the data by perhaps unconsciously leaving cues, thereby leading to extraneous variables. However, Eagly (187) discusses this sex of researchers' effect and concludes that it is not a robust one.

AIM

The aim of this work is to test if women show higher rates of conformity than men.

Dream of the Red Chamber is a book that has been under much analysis and study, and is considered to be one of the most famous Chinese books ever. The themes in the book are numerous, and the meanings are interpreted in more than one way. The main significance and storyline in the book, however, cannot be disputed, although it too can be looked at in more ways than one. The author used a mythical background to relate to the central story and relationship between Pao-Yu and Black Jade. In the beginning of the story, 6,501 blocks of jade were prepared by the Goddess of works to repair the heavens. Only one block of Jade was unused, and was therefore cast to the earth, and because it was spiritualized, it was it was a special stone that was sent to fulfill its destiny. Later on, the stone is found by a Buddhist and a Taoist, who see that the stone is not yet inscripted, meaning it has not yet fulfilled what it was set to do. The stone was said to be once roaming among the earth, and fell in love with a flower, which then turned into a girl. And in return for the stone's love for her, she said to the stone, "the moisture you have bestowed upon me here I will repay you in our future state with my tears! (Giles) Many years later, the stone was found again by a priest, who saw that the stone was now inscripted with a record of its existence. And the record then told the story of Pao-Yu and Black Jade.

Mythical ideas and concepts are used to help define the relationship between Black Jade and Pao-Yu. The stone seems to be the representation of the family of Pao-Yu and its experiences, but mostly it seems to be reincarnation of Pao-Yu himself, while the flower is the reincarnation of Black Jade. The stone was already fated since the beginning of the story to have a tragic experience, and the flower as well, since it is said that the flower will repay the stone "in our future state with my tears!" And the flower, in the state of Black Jade, does end up repaying the stone with tears, when she dies in sadness after she finds out that Pao-Yu is marrying another cousin. However, Pao-Yu does not realize that it is not Black Jade until he unveils her. Pao-Yu then runs away to the mountains, where it becomes a stone once again.

The one block of stone that was not used to repair the heavens was cast down to earth and was hurt because it was not used. The events that happened to the stone reflect the future events of the stone as Pao-Yu, who finds a beautiful girl, reflective of the flower he met in his past life, but their happiness is short-lived, because of the very nature of a flower. Like a flower, Black Jade was beautiful and in bloom, but only for a short time, and soon withering away. She was fragile in health, being struck by some disease, and because of her fragile nature, Pao-Yu's family did not want Pao-Yu marrying her, so instead set him to marry another cousin, Pao-Chai, and putting a veil over her. Write my Essay on dream of red chamber for me

The entire story of Pao-Yu and Black Jade is told through mythical concepts such as that of the stone, flower, and the Goddess of Works and the one black jade she cast down to earth. Pao-Yu and Black Jades' relationship is told through this mythical framework, and the outcome is exactly how the story unfolds; Tragic.

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis or TB, is an infectious disease caused by a microorganism called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It can affect many different parts of the body, although it usually infects the lungs. Tuberculosis in the lungs is called pulmonary tuberculosis. The first stage lasts for several months. The immune system resists TB during this stage. Most of the bacteria are walled in by a fibrous capsule that forms around it. A few will make it to the bloodstream where they will be eventually walled in. Most cases never develop beyond this stage. This is known as TB infection.

If the immune system is not able to stop the infection and the bacteria not treated, the bacteria begin the second stage. During this stage, the bacteria reproduce quickly and destroy the lung tissues. TB usually results in a much smaller respiratory capacity, which in turn makes physical exercise difficult. This stage usually begins if a person's immune system is low.

During the first stage, the person may have no symptoms at all. They may have a flu-like illness though. The first stage is usually found in the middle or lower lung. There it reproduces and spreads into the lymph nodes. From here it has access to the bloodstream.

During the second stage, though, it becomes much worse. Symptoms may be a fever, night sweats, weight loss, and fatigue. Pulmonary TB, however, gives a dry, non-mucous cough and is followed by bloodstained sputum when you cough. You also have chest pain and shortness of breath. During this stage, the bacteria are very contagious.

TB is carried in the air and enters the body through the nose or mouth. A person with second stage pulmonary TB spreads the disease when coughing or sneezing. So, in order to become infected, a person would come in close contact with another person that had second stage TB. You can also get TB from unpasteurized milk and other dairy products from infected cows. The rarest way of getting TB is transmitted by infected urine. This way is most commonly found in young children who use the same bathrooms.

Anyone can get TB. TB is found in people of all ages also. People with HIV infection, close contact to people with TB, immune deficiencies, people from countries with TB rates, people that work in certain care facilities.

TB is not hard to treat in either stage, but is much simpler in the first stage when the bacteria is still walled in. A drug called INH is taken for six to nine months and can completely wipe out the entire disease. But, in order for this to work you have to eat good foods, get good rest, and follow the orders that your physician gives you. Rarely, a doctor may need to remove a badly damaged part of your lung. After treatment though, you still need to have regular check-ups to make sure you stay healthy. It is the only way to tell if you have got the disease again because if the skin test is positive once, it is always positive.

The normal diagnostic test for TB is a skin test. A certain amount of liquid containing a protein taken from the microorganism causing TB is injected under the skin of the forearm. The spot where the protein was injected is examined anywhere from 48-7 hours to tell if you are positive or negative. If you are positive, it doesn't mean that you actually have the disease. You may still be in stage one. If it is positive though, the doctor will take a chest x-ray to tell if you are in first or second stage TB.

Buddhism, Islam and Christianity

In Buddhism, Islam, and Christianity there was a main event that is central to its respective religion. In Christianity, Jesus' death and resurrection is the central event. The call of Mohammed and the hegira are central to Islam while Buddha's enlightenment under the Bo tree is the main event in Buddhism. Each event is singular to its religion and attributes to its beliefs and teachings.

Christians believe that after the messiah, Jesus Christ, had spent about three years teaching the gospel, he was crucified for all of our sins. The Pharisee arrested him for heresy and whipped him and treated him very cruelly. Three days later he rose from the dead, proving he was and is the Son of God. To Christians, Jesus' death is very important. It shows how deep God loves us and how much He is willing to sacrifice for us. It is the epitome of Gods love for His people and also fulfills the scriptures. I think that the most important aspect though is Jesus opening the gates of heaven. It shows love as well, but it also demonstrates the measure of commitment that God/Jesus has with us.

In Buddhism, Buddha's enlightenment under the Bo tree is very important and central. What happened was that Siddhartha Guatauma sat under a Bo tree seeking enlightenment. As he sat there in deep meditation Mara, the evil one, tempted him. He surpassed these temptations and continued to meditate until he emerged the Enlightened One or the Buddha. This event is very important to the Buddhist religion. It is the moment when the Buddha started to teach. After sitting under the Bo tree in bliss for forty-nine days he emerged and was ready to share with the world what he knew. He was a great rationalist and a compassionate man, who taught what he believed, which in return started the religion of Buddhism. Mainly, Buddha's enlightenment was central to Buddhism because that is when the ideas from the Buddha were spread and thus started Buddhism.

The call of Mohammed was from the angel Gabriel in the desert praying. He believed that God had chosen Mohammed to be his main prophet and teach that Allah, God, was the only true god. In respect to the Islamic religion, it is very important because it began Mohammed on his mission to teach about the one true god, becoming the main prophet. The hejira, sometimes spelled hegira, which means departure refers to Mohammed's journey from Mecca to Medina. It also is remembered in the journey that every Muslim has to take at least once in his/her lifetime to Mecca, or the hold land. Basically I think that taking this journey, which is stated as a rule in the five pillars (five duties of every Muslim containing only worshiping the one true god Allah, praying five times a day in the direction of the holy land Mecca, giving alms to charity, fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in your life), is a way to relive the journey that Mohammed took in order to be closer to him and also to see were your religion began, brining you closer and more in touch with your past. It brings your history to life; gives it a form. Mohammed's call started all this. It started opening people's eyes to Mohammed's teachings of God and a new religion that was similar to the Christian and Jewish religions, just a continuation. Help with essay on Buddhism, Islam and ChristianityBasically Jesus' death and resurrection connects everything else taught to Christians and "wraps up" any loose ends left untied in past scripture, Buddha's enlightenment starts a series of new teachings resulting in a new religion, and Mohammed's call brings a new prophet to the people teaching about Allah, the one true God. All of these events clarify the meaning of their respective religions, each one being a very important event that shaped the religion (or created a religion) brining new meaning into the life of the Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists.

To Kill A Mockingbird Influences on Scout from Interactions w/ Others

Growing up in Maycomb, Southern Alabama in the 10s was not an easy thing. Amid a town of prejudice and racism, stood a lone house where equality and respect for all gleamed like a shining star amid an empty space. The house of Atticus Finch was that shining star. Jean Louise Finch, also known as ¡°Scout¡±, is given the opportunity of being raised in this house by her father, Atticus. I stole this essay from the net. As she grows, Atticus passes down his values of equality and righteousness to Scout and her brother Jeremy Atticus Finch, also known as ¡°Jem¡±. In ¡°To Kill a Mockingbird¡±, by Harper Lee, we see Scout learns many lessons about dealing with prejudice by observing the behavior of other characters in the story.

Scout learns that by yielding to prejudice, we often hurt and cause strife unto others. For example, Scout is harassed and becomes the target of insults when her father decides to defend Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. This is a plajurized essay. The hate felt towards black people by the majority of the Maycomb citizens causes them to bother and harass those who attempt to befriend the black people. Forgive me for stealing this essay. Scout realizes that the only reason she must undergo this torment is that her father is defending a black man, which has become taboo because of the corruption that racism has caused in many people. In addition, Scout watches Tom Robinson undergo unfair treatment and false accusations. Please dont tell my parents I stole this essay. Although Atticus provides the jury and the people of Maycomb with overwhelming evidence benefiting Tom, and ultimately proving him innocent, this is not enough to overcome the powers of hate and racism. Scout watches as the jury deliberates and convicts Tom Robinson of murder because he is a black man. This is a stolen essay. Although Scout witnesses a myriad of injustices occurring against black people, she also sees an exiguity of kind and compassionate movements towards black people.

Scout learns that by resisting prejudice, we often help others. For example, Scout sees Atticus defend Tom Robinson, despite the white people of the town's disapproval. By defending Tom, Atticus paves a small pathway in Maycomb for black people to follow to attempt to raise their social status. Sorry, I got this essay from the net. Glancing at only the fact that the jury deliberated for hours, we, as well as Scout, can see that Atticus has created an everlasting impact on the citizens of Maycomb. In addition, Scout sees Link Deas defend Helen Robinson from Bob Ewell and his children. The Ewells have been harassing Helen, the wife of Tom Robinson, as she passes by their house every day, because she is black. This is a stolen essay. However, Link Deas will not have it, and he spits on the Ewell residence after he informs them that Ms Robinson will pass by freely without harassment. Scout sees that not all people feel hatred towards black people.

Hatred and prejudice poison the people they infest. Through her experiences and interactions with others, Scout learns to act in spite of prejudice. I stole this essay. Scout's experiences made her a better person because she learns to treat others with respect and dignity and always have tolerance towards people of difference races. Scout learns that prejudice causes strife to others, while tolerance often helps them.
