Many people believe that slavery is wrong, but during the time period from 1600 to 1865 slavery was considered morally and economically right by the South. The North on the other hand considered slavery immoral and not economically right. The difference in these views show up in how both sides made a living. The North was industrial and the South was agricultural. The South needed workers and if the work could be done for free this increased the profit on the plantations. The North had no need for slaves because the work was mainly based in factories and industries. Even though the North thought slavery was wrong, both sides thought that blacks were in many ways inferior to whites. The institution of slavery in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and in the time period from 1600 to 1865 was morally and from an economic standpoint right, but the relevance of slavery was beginning to change in the eyes of Huck and in the eyes of America.

There is one difference between a human and an animal. A human is the only animal that would enslave another animal. Negroes were considered animals and it is human nature to enslave another animal as property. This is what sets humans apart from animals. During this time period Negroes were no more than cattle. As cattle farmers need cattle today, plantations needed slaves then. This was the way of life for the South. This can be seen in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The Phelps' and Miss Watson owned slaves and needed slaves to make a living. These people did not see anything

wrong with owning slaves. Miss Watson was even a religious woman living out her life in the ways of God and The Bible.Do my essay on slavery and the adventures of huckleberry finn CHEAP !

The Bible was a main cog in the machine that was slavery. The South believed that by going and getting Negroes from Africa that they were saving these Negroes' souls. They used the Bible to justify their actions. The Bible was used almost like a manifest destiny for slavery. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Huck was being pulled between his belief in The Bible and his friendship for Jim. He was willing to risk eternal hell for Jim, and was confused on whether to turn Jim in or help him escape. America was also confused during this time period, confused on the issues of slavery, which tore the nation apart.

Something extreme has to happen to alter someone's beliefs. Huck took an adventure and found a friend; America had a war but found the truth about slavery. Both Huck's beliefs and America's beliefs were found over time. One twelve-year-old boy found the truth about equality, racism, and slavery in a month that has taken American as a whole a hundred years to find.

Negro Baseball League

When baseball started from its origin, baseball history came together at one point and formed a separate branch that paralleled the mainstream life for a half-century, until it finally joined again making baseball whole again. During baseball's separation it was incomplete. The majority of American's followed the mainstream. Only to occasionally crossover and watch the parallel stream.

For a half-century white Americans watched major league baseball, vaguely aware of Negro League Baseball. To many white baseball observers black baseball players were unreal and hardly heard of. In the Negro Leagues there were many exceptionally talented players.

Two of today's best-known hall of Fames is Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson, black baseball players. Satchel Paige was once quoted to have said, "there were many Satchel's and Josh's." Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson were two of the players that opened the doors of opportunity for black baseball players like Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Bonds.

On December 14, 1868 black baseball players were excluded from playing on Major League teams because of their race. Black players continued to play baseball, though they had to play on all-black teams and soon after all-black leagues. The first all-black team was the Cuban Giants in 1885. The teams played as independent clubs until 10 when the first black league was established.

In 10 Rube Foster founded the Negro National League. Three years later Ed Bolden formed the ECL or Eastern Colored League. The two leagues operated successfully until they crumbled under financial burdens. There were also other leagues also operated for one season but was not able to continue for the same reasons.

In 1 a new Negro National League was formed, and in 17 Negro American League was formed. These two leagues were run until the color line was broken. During the Lifetime of the Negro Leagues played eleven World Series (14-17, 14-148). They also created their own All-star game in 1.

The Negro National League and the Negro American League coexisted through 148. In 14 they were combined and operated through 160, when the league was officially ended. For a half-century the best black players weren't allowed to be on the same field as white players until Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

During the lifespan of Negro League baseball some of the most talented players of all time were showcased. Without the Negro Leagues being formed by Rube Foster what would baseball be like today? How long would it take for someone to notice that black players are as talented as white baseball players?

Myself as a Writer

When I think of myself as a writer I think of air no matter who or what someone is, one needs it, but it's not usually the best quality. If the truth be told, my report writing is not first-rate material. Sure, I would like to improve on it, but I have been trying to achieve this goal for years. Although, when I write just for fun, I am able to write creatively and my words seem to be able to flow easier. In the sixth grade, I remember writing a story about biological and chemical warfare that shocked my mom and my teacher (except for the quirky name of the main character, Ken Knee). That particular paper gave me an increased amount of confidence in my writing ability but, over the last few years, it has steadily dropped. I would like to regain my confidence and write more fluently in all forms of writing.

Although I do not usually like writing school reports, I do enjoy writing emails and original stories. For me it is easier for me to write when I am having enjoying myself. Usually, when I write reports, I get writers block because I am afraid of my grammar and word usage while when I write stories and e-mails, I am able to write the way I talk which enables my words to come out easier and make the paper more enjoyable to read. If school papers were as easy for me to write as emails, I think I would have an "A" on every paper. I would like to be able to write my reports with the same amount of fluency and ease as when I type e-mails or create original stories at my house.

Write my Essay on Writing for me

Most writers experience some form of writer's block. In fact, every writer will experience it at time or another. For me writer's block comes to me in the sense that I find it hard to organize and sort my information. It seems I have too much information to squeeze into one paper. Also, it seems when I'm writing, I loose my sense of imagination and creativity which is crucial to writing a report that is enjoyable to the reader. I need to learn how to organize my paper and make the words vivid in the reader's mind. When I am really into what I am writing, it is easier for me to think and make the words pop right out of the page. Sometimes I find that I do use very many descriptive words in my papers. I myself cannot stand to read my paper when nothing flows. I will have to learn how to overcome my writer's block and make my papers more entertaining to read.

Recently, I have researched on how to overcome writer's block. Www.essortment.com gives a few reasons on how writer's block develops. First, writer's block happens when there is no interest in the topic. If one are so uninterested in the topic that one cant even write about it, why would anyone want to read it? Secondly, it happens when there is not enough information. How can one write about a topic when there is no more information to write down? Also, one could be too tired to concentrate, which for me, happens all the time because usually, I have already been studying the whole day. Finally, they say that one's idea is under-developed. How can one completely rid of writer's block? Www.essortment.com says that it is impossible to completely overcome it but there are a few steps to step around it. one can try to avoid writer's block by writing everyday and also by free-writing. Maybe a way that I could improve on my report writing is by free-writing more often. I think I will heed to this advice and apply it to my writing.

Writing is like air no matter who or what someone is, they need it, but it's not usually the best quality. I would like to regain my confidence and write more fluently in all forms of writing. If I can apply those simple steps to overcoming writer's block to my papers, I think my report writing will be dramatically improved. Although I am still more comfortable free-writing, I believe I will be able to write my papers more fluently and effective.

The title of my selection is When Grizzlies Walked Upright. It is an oral legend that was passed by from generation to generation and was later translated into English. Richard Erdoes and Alfonzo Ortiz also retold this story. The Genre of the story is Prose. It is also known as the Modoc story. It is somewhat like a creation story.

When Grizzlies Walked Upright is about how the Chief of the Sky Spirits was tired of his home in the Above World and decided to do something about if. So he carved a hole in the sky and created a great mound known today as Mount Shasta. He walked down onto the land and pointed to the ground and everywhere he pointed trees grew. The snow he stepped on as he made his way down melted and created the rivers.

The Sky Spirit broke the small end of the walking stick he held and threw it into the river, which made beavers, otters, and fish. The leaves that fell from trees turned into birds. The larger end of the stick was used to create the animals that walked the earth; the biggest were the grizzlies. The grizzlies looked the way they do now but walked on two feet and could talk. Their looks are what caused the Sky Spirit to send them to live in the forest.

The Sky Spirit decided to live with his family on the earth at the top of the mountain. He made a big fire in the center of the mountain and a hole in the top where smoke and sparks came out of, this was the creation of volcanoes.

Help with essay on When Grizzlies Walked Upright SummaryOne spring, the Sky Spirit and his family sat around the fire and a storm started. The Sky Spirit asked his daughter to ask the Wind Spirit to blow more gently and told her not to stick her head out of the top or she will be blown away. She told the Wind Spirit and then her curiosity got the better of her for wanting to see the ocean. She stuck her head out and was blown away. She landed at the base of the mountain.

A grizzly bear later found the little girl and brought her to live with him and his family. She grew up and she and the eldest son of the grizzly bears were married and had many children, who were not as hairy as the grizzlies but did not look like their mother, either. They moved into a lodge that is now called Little Mount Shasta.

Soon many years had passed and the mother grizzly knew she would die but feared asking the Chief of the sky to for giver her for keeping his daughter. She sent her oldest grandson to tell the Spirit Chief where to find his daughter. When her received the news he went to see his daughter he was angry that she had created a new race that was not of his making. He then cursed the grizzlies into walking on all fours and never talk again.

The Sky Spirit drove his grandchildren out of the lodge and carried his daughter back up the mountain. Never again did he come to the forest. His grandchildren wandered the earth and became the first Indians. The Indians living around Mount Shasta would never kill a grizzly bear and when a grizzly killed an Indian, his body was buried at the spot. For many years, all who pass by cast a stone there until a pile of stones marked the place of his death.

"The Quiet Man" to me represents a universal stereotype of Irish people and their way of life. Their customs and rituals are held with as much regard as the law itself. However to me "The Quiet Man" does not accurately describe the life of the Irish people in those times. Ford has created a film filled with nostalgia and sentimentality. A film, that was loved by all because it leaves out the harshness and sobering reality, that was Irish life all those years ago.

On first viewing "The Quiet Man" my initial reaction was one of sentimentality like many others. The simplistic way the people lived ruled by their customs and rituals that played such an important role in their lives. It portrays Ireland in that time as a time of "simple pastoral integrity" (Harlan Kennedy). The women are fiery, the people are backwards and it shows a community tightly bound together and insistent on knowing everyone else's business. Its scenes (such as the arrival of Sean into the train station) give way to comical "Irish" banter.

"D'ya see that road over there well don't take that one!"

The characters are developed with all the qualities of an "Irish" person. Michaeleen Oge Flynn takes the role of the shaughraun or matchmaker a typical Irish tradition. On Sean's first arrival in Ireland this man bombards him with questions showing the intrusiveness of Irish society. This combined with Mary Kate Danagher ;her fiery disposition, her red hair and her green eyes shows Ireland stereotypes at their best. But Ford has created a an imaginary world of festiveness and jolliness associated with being Irish. None of the struggles of the Irish people or how it really was is portrayed.

This leads to my change of mind about this film. It is nothing more then a cultural myth created in the mind of John Ford. He talks of an idyllic dreamland of an Ireland that never existed. While in certain ways, yes, he does show us some true facts about Irish life such as the custom of matchmaking and dowries, it's overall jolliness and festive feel of it's characters shows Ireland through rose tinted glasses.

The film also criticises Ireland quite harshly on it's beliefs, customs and traditions that was actually quite true of the time. It praises America subtly on its modern view on social issues such as marriage. For example our protagonist cannot understand how the powerful passion that he feels for Mary Kate is being stopped by mere tradition and custom. He is gently reminded by Michaeleen that

"This is Ireland, Sean, not America. Without her brother's consent, she couldn't and wouldn't"

While treating Ireland as an idyllic country Ford also manages to show America as the better country and with a tone of superiority.

To me John Ford is living an Irish dream of his through Sean Thorton. Like many others he has grasped the universal stereotype of Irish society and has ignored all realities of the true country. Even Roddy Doyles "The Commitments" can be seen as a more accurate view of Irish life. While I would like to believe that Fords view on Irish society of that time was true, it is not. I think that while he made a film based on sentimentality and nostalgia, he would have been better off to show the true Ireland as it was.

The general psychological subject area of this study is social influence.

This can be defined as "the process by which an individual's attitudes, beliefs or behaviours are modified by the presence or actions of others" (Saks & Krupat 188).

There are several types of social influence but this piece of research will be investigating conformity in particular and, more specifically, gender.

Conformity is referred to as "a change in behaviour or belief as a result of real or imagined group pressure" (David Myers 1). Do my essay on Conformity in gender CHEAP !

Research into conformity dates as far back as 50 B.C. with Aristotle's writings on social influences and persuasion. However, experimental studies did not begin until the twentieth century with Floyd Allport (14).

Participants were required to judge the pleasantness of a set of odours, alone and then in small groups. Allport found that their judgements after the group discussion, approached the mean of their group and concluded that they conformed in attempt to be accepted by the others.

A study similar to that of Allport's and the basis for this research is that of Jenness' (1). Individual students were asked to estimate the number of beans in a bottle and then later placed in groups to discuss and come to a group conclusion. Jenness observed that when asked for a second judgement, participants made a distinct shift towards the group estimate.

Psychologists also believe that individual differences may play a role in conformity. Crutchfield's (155) study consisted of participants drawn mainly from the business sector and the military. They were tested for several qualities, some of which included intelligence, leadership ability and ego strength. He found that those who had scored highly in these, displayed lower levels of conformity.

Crutchfield's findings, therefore, seem to suggest that there is a conforming type of personality but there has been no substantial evidence to support this theory.

A meta-analysis of past studies into conformity carried out by Eagly & Carli (181) showed that women conformed more than men. It was suggested that these gender differences in conformity may have been as a result of typical social roles. Men are generally perceived to occupy positions of higher status and power and hence tend to be more exerting whereas women are seen to be more accepting (Eagly & Wood 185).

However, later research by Eagly (187) did not reflect similar findings to past experiments but rather seemed to show that there was in fact little significant difference in the rates of conformity in either gender. Researcher bias may have been introduced here due to the occurence of expectation effects whereby the researcher ( female) is deeply committed to acheiving a particular outcome and so could have affected the data by perhaps unconsciously leaving cues, thereby leading to extraneous variables. However, Eagly (187) discusses this sex of researchers' effect and concludes that it is not a robust one.

AIM

The aim of this work is to test if women show higher rates of conformity than men.
