What is Kaizen?

Kaizen means improvement. Kaizen strategy calls for never-ending

efforts for improvement involving everyone in the organization -

managers and workers alike.

Kaizen and Management

Management has two major components

1.maintenance, and

.improvement.

The objective of the maintenance function is to maintain current

technological, managerial, and operating standards. The improvement

function is aimed at improving current standards.

Under the maintenance function, the management must first

establish policies, rules, directives and standard operating procedures

(SOPs) and then work towards ensuring that everybody follows SOP.

The latter is achieved through a combination of discipline and human

resource development measures.

Under the improvement function, management works continuously

towards revising the current standards, once they have been mastered,

and establishing higher ones. Improvement can be broken down

between innovation and Kaizen. Innovation involves a drastic

improvement in the existing process and requires large investments.

Kaizen signifies small improvements as a result of coordinated

continuous efforts by all employees.

Employee Empowerment Suggestion System & Quality

Control (QC) Circles

The suggestion system is an integral part of an established

management system that aims at involving employees in Kaizen. The

number of workers suggestions is regarded as an important criteria in

reviewing the performance of the workers supervisor and the manager

of the supervisor.

The Japanese management encourages employees to generate a great

number of suggestions and works hard to consider and implement

these suggestions, often incorporating them into the overall Kaizen

strategy. Management also gives due recognition to employees efforts

for improvement. An important aspect of the suggestion system is that

each suggestion, once implemented, leads to an upgraded standard.

Quality control (QC) circles can be viewed as a group-oriented

suggestion system for making improvements. QC circle is a small group

that voluntarily performs quality-control activities in the workplace.

Total quality control (TQC) involves everyone in the organization and is

aimed at improvement of managerial performance at all levels.

Process-Oriented Thinking as Opposite to Result-Oriented

Thinking

Kaizen concentrates at improving the process rather than at achieving

certain results. Such managerial attitudes make a major difference in

how an organization masters change and achieves improvements.

WHO IS TO BLAME FOR THE DEATHS OF ROMEO AND JULIET?

William Shakespeare was a very famous and influential Elizabethan playwright. He wrote a lot of famous plays, but one of the most famous plays was Romeo and Juliet.

Romeo and Juliet is a tragic love story about two young lovers from feuding Veronese families. Because of the feud between the families Romeo and Juliet should not be together, so they secretly get married. The feud between the families results in Romeo killing Juliet's cousin and getting banished from Verona. Juliet then fakes her death so that she can be with Romeo, Romeo believes that Juliet is actually dead and kills himself because he can not live without Juliet. Juliet who was actually in a drug endorsed sleep awakes to find Romeo dead and then kills herself.

As with many things it is difficult to pin point the blame on one specific occurrence or particular character for the death of Romeo and Juliet, as even the slightest mishap in this story can lead to something far worse than expected.

Cheap University Papers on who is to blame for the deaths of romeo and juliet

There are numerous characters and events throughout the play which ultimately lead to the death of the two young lovers, but I will centre my attention on the more obvious ones to start out with.

The first and most obvious reason would be the feud between the two families, which is stated in the prologue.

"Two households both alike in dignity (in fair Verona, where we lay our scene) From ancient grudge break to new mutiny."

The feud between the two families was ancient but had been carried on to Romeo and Juliet's generation, it was because of the feud that Romeo got banished from Verona.

In Act 1, scene 1 there is a fight between the servants of both families, Tybalt and Benvolio were also involved in this fight. The fight took place in a public place in the streets of Verona, and was brought to the attention of the Prince, this is were the Prince brought about his new rule of fighting in the streets and disturbing the peace, in which the punishment for would be death.

"If you ever disturb our streets again your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace."

If the new law hadn't been enforced then Romeo may not have been banished from Verona.

The second occurrence would be the party organised by Capulet which is were Romeo and Juliet met and fell in love.

The servant sent by Capulet could also be partially to blame as well, because if he hadn't asked Romeo to read the invitation, Romeo would have not known about the party or the fact that Rosaline would have been there.

At the beginning of the play Romeo is in love with Rosaline and is depressed because Rosaline does not love him in return. When Romeo reads the invitation Benvolio urges him to go to the party to see Rosaline and then compare her to some women that he knows.

"At this same ancient feast of Capulet's sup the fair Rosaline, whom thou so loves …compare her face with some that I shall show and I will make thee think thy swan a crow."

By doing this he is trying to show Romeo that Rosaline is not as pretty as he thinks she is, and is trying to take his mind off her by showing him other women.

This encourages Romeo to go to the party.

Whilst at the party Romeo is spotted by Tybalt, who is angered by the fact that his enemy is at his family's party.

The party is also the place that Romeo and Juliet first meet, fall in love and that same night decided to get married.

In Act scene Romeo and Juliet speak of marriage, and in Act scene Romeo goes to Friar Laurence and convinces him to marry him and Juliet.

Friar Laurence agrees because he thinks that the marriage would bring the feud between the families to an end "For this alliance may so happy prove to turn your households' rancour to pure love"

So Friar Laurence is an other character who could be to blame for the deaths of the two lovers.

Juliet's Nurse can also be partially to blame because she went through with the plan to get the two married.

Advertising is a common means used by many organizations or companies all over the world to make their product or service well known, and easier to be sold, but when putting into practices, the ways they use can be varied. Take China and Canada for example, they are different in implementing advertising practices, not only from the various medium they choose in which advertising message is communicated but also from the diverse content they focus on.

Most of mediums both China and Canada adopt for advertising are similar. Both sides regard TV, radio and newspaper as very important media for advertising. The strength of TV is that it can offer some combination of sound and sight, which are easily accepted by audience. As for radio, providing low cost information and attracting large potential audience as with TV are main advantages. Moreover, advertiser can select the stations and time favored by audience they want to reach. The chief merit for newspaper is its broad reach. Reading paper is still most common way to obtain up-to-date message for people. Chinese and Canadian advertisers also have their own particular ways to attract public attention. In China, it is quite often for you to see a group of people walking or riding on the street, wearing same cloth with remarkable color and letter, they are actually flowing billboard, which is impossible in Canada because of expensive labor force. Direct mail, in Canada, is frequently used media by advertisers, but paid little attention by Chinese pitchman.

Different content of advertisement are also can be found between two countries. In China, some newly developed and famous brand is usually associated with celebrities. Because some advertisers believe that it is easier for consumers to get deep impression to a commodity, if it frequently appears in public with visualization of a famous people. In contrast, Canadian advertisers seem not prefer inviting supper stars to participate in their activities for publicity. As for wine or hard drinks, they are the products always advertised in prime time and notable place in China while strict regulations are imposed on spirits advertising in Canada. A particular advertisement category in Canada is the Generic advertising, which attempts to raise demand for a particular product regardless of brand. For instance, one of Canadian association serving for peasants pays for advertising to encourage people drinking their milk without reference to specific brand. However, Chinese advertisers never ignore the brand of a product in their advertisement.

In addition to said similarity and difference, with the development of latest technologies, new features have been added to advertising industries in both countries. Internet, the greatest invention of 0th century, plays an important role in people's daily life working, studying and entertainment. Therefore most advertisers regard it as perfect media to spread information on line. By using Internet, advertisement becomes more reachable to audience than before. Maybe a computer can replace all other medias, such as TV, radio and newspaper as only medium for advertising in the future. In comparison Internet advertising industry in China and Canada, it seems that the Internet advertising in Canada is more mature and regulatory than in China. A not-for-profit association-Internet Advertising Bureau of Canada representing its membership composed of publishers, advertisers, advertising agencies and service associates in the Canadian interactive marketing industry has been established in December 17, which focuses on marketing and advertising excellence by establishing structure and standards. As a Chinese, I have to admit that the Chinese Internet advertising industry is only in growing period; more effort should be made to provide advertisers with a comprehensive guide to Internet advertising, and to foster growth and understanding of interactive marketing method of Internet advertising industry.

In sum, advertising is absolutely necessary means for many organizations and company in their marketing activities in both China and Canada, however, because of different economic development level, cultural background and way of thinking, each country has its own distinctive features when choosing the content and media of advertisement.

In the New York Herald year 16 there is an account of the hanging of three men. They died for the murder of Sir William Edward Godfrey. Husband, father, chemist and all round gentleman of Green berry Hill Manor. Three vagrants whose motive was simple robbery murdered him. They were identified as Joseph Green, Stanley Berry and Frank Hill. Green, Berry, Hill and I would like to think that this was all a matter of chance.

As reported in the Reno Gazette June 18 there is a story of a forest fire the water that was used to contain the fire and a scuba diver named Delver Darien. Delver was an employee of the Golden Nugget Hotel Reno Nevada. He worked as a card dealer at the hotel. He was well liked and was regarded to be a physical, recreational and sporting sort but his true passion was for the lake. While Delver was swimming a plane which was sent to pick up water to contain the fire accidentally and unintentionally scooped poor Delver out of the water. As reported by the coroner he died of a heart attack somewhere between the lake and the forest fire. The most curios thing of all was the suicide note, which belonged to Craig Henderson a volunteer fire fighter divorced father of four with a tendency to drink. Mr. Henderson was the pilot of the plane that lifted Delver out of the water. Added to this Mr. Henderson's tortured life met with Delver's just to nights previous. He met Delver at his cards table where in his drunken state started a fight over a bad hand he was dealt. The weight of the guilt and measure of coincidence was so large that Craig Henderson took his own life. What im trying to say is that this was just one of those things, only a coincidence nothing more.

The television told of a 161 awards dinner for the American society of forensics science by doctor John Harper president of the association. It began with a simple suicide attempt. Seventeen-year-old Sydney Basinger in the city of Los Angela on the rd of March 158 jumped from the roof of his nine-story apartment building but as he flew past a window three stories below he was shot in the stomach before ironically falling into a safety net. The coroner ruled that the unsuccessful suicide had suddenly turned into a successful homicide. To explain, a note in Sydney's right hip pocket confirmed the suicide. At the same time as young Sydney stood at the ledge of this nine-story building an argument swelled three stories below. The neighbors heard as they usually did the arguing of the tenants and it wasn't uncommon for them to threaten each other with a shotgun or one of the many handguns kept in the apartment, and when the shot gun went off Sydney just happened to pass. Added to this the two tenants turned out to Mary and Arthur Basinger, Sydney's mother and father. When confronted with the charge which took some time for the police officers at the scene to figure out Fay Basinger swore she did not know the gun was loaded. Arthur supported this by claiming the guns were never kept loaded. A young boy a friend of Sydney's who lives down the hall said had seen six days prior the loading of the gun. It seems that all the arguing, fighting and violence was two much for young Sydney and knowing his mother and fathers tendency to threaten each other with guns made him want to do something about it by loading the gun.

Sydney Basinger jumps from the ninth floor rooftop. His parents argue three stories below. Fays accidental shotgun blast hits Sydney in the stomach as he passes the arguing sixth floor window. He is killed instantly but continues to fall only to find five stories below a safety net installed three days prior for a couple of window washers that would have broken his fall and saved his life if it weren't for the hole in his stomach. So Fay Basinger was charged with the murder of her son and Sydney Basinger noted as

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the databases applications that Rawlling is currently using in the Assembly Department. After analyzing the current situation then a proposal will be made to improve the application and the way Rawlling operates when dealing with their databases.

I work as an assembler at Rawlling. I have no contact with computers. Because of this I have little knowledge about the databases applications that are used, except for what I have picked up over the years. I do know that Rawlling uses Microsoft in any and all applications. Rawlling is also negligent when it comes to updating software in some of the computers.

Rawlling has state of the art technology when it comes to software, equipment and machines to help run production at a higher rate of speed. When it comes to technology in areas of accounting, and information then they lack the readiness to stay with the times. Because of this some work areas may have two computers that are side by side. The manager can be seen working with one computer and then stepping over to the other computer. This process may take a manager numerous times before he is able to complete the task that is needed.

The purpose of two computers is to access different databases at the same time. An example of why someone would want to do this is during the time of production when the models of cars that are being built are being changed. During this time management may need to view the layout of the models that are approaching to make sure that they have the parts at the workstations that are needed for each model. These leaders need to view the parts that each station has on hand. The second computer is needed to be able to send messages to the parts department to order any part that is needed to build the models of automobiles that are approaching.

Another problem that I have seen is the time that it takes management to gather information. It seems that it takes a long time to retrieve information when switching between databases. Some of this may be due to the computer itself but I am sure that some of this time that is wasted is due to the fact that different databases are being used and because of the system that is used to handle the retrieval is slow.

The problem with this is that there is one person that has a need for two computers because he or she cannot access two different databases at the same time. The leader needs to go back and forth between the computers with learning what they need from one computer and then using another to order what is needed.

With the application software that is available I would propose improvements for the Assembly Department. Instead of the old slow outdated application database that is currently in place I would recommend that Rawlling invest in a distributed database that can handle the Internet, as well as the intranets. Doing this would help the end user, Rawlling to access information at a higher rate of speed and be more efficient in doing so. Doing this Rawlling's management would not lose so much time trying to get information that is critical for production because they are switching between the databases trying to get information and then placing orders as a result of that information. They would also not need to keep and maintain so many computers in the work areas.

Should Rawlling invest in a databases application that is equipped with multi-task applications then information will be at hand. An example of this would be when a manager who wants to view production and determine if the parts that are needed are at the workstations. After a manager views this information and makes the decision that parts need to be ordered then it would be best for the manager to place this order on the same computer at the same time when he sees that parts are needed. It seems like a waste of time and effort to move back and forth between computers.

In conclusion it would be best for Rawlling to update to a distributed database application system so information between the end user, intranets and the Internet is easily accessible. They lose time and money because they negligent to change and update their system. Managers lose time by waiting on information instead of spending this time taking care of the business.

Harper Lee portrayed Mrs. Henry Lafayette Dubose in an unique style. Mrs. Dubose was a very ill woman who only has a nigger woman as company. Her illness had separated her from socializing with friends and had restricted her from doing things that normal women are doing. For instance, having afternoon tea with neighbors, or taking a night stroll with friends. Mrs. Dubose was a very straight forward lady. When she had something to say, she would not hesitate or stop to think what other people would feel. It was this characteristic that brought Jem, Scout and Mrs. Dubose closer together.

Whenever Scout and Jem walked pass Mrs. Dubose's house, it was typical to expect cruel comments regarding their manners and predictions on what they would grow up to be, which was always nothing. Jem and Scout often disregarded the taunts, with a simple nod or a polite answer. Jem cutting Mrs. Dubose every camellia bush with scissors was one time too many. Mrs. Dubose remarked that Scout and Jem's dad was a nigger lover, and their father was no better than the niggers and trash he worked for. That insult was the cause of Jem's volatile temper. The consequence was that Jem had to read to Mrs. Dubose for a week. She ended up enjoying it so much that she requested Jem to go to her house one more week. She later died drug free from her sickness but still didn't forget Jem and Scout's company. She left them a box of chocolates.

Mrs. Dubose resembled my grandmother's friend, Ami. She is like Mrs. Dubose because she is a very lonesome woman. In contrast, she does not have a fatal illness like Mrs. Dubose. At age 77, she lives her life with a crane in her hand. She was blinded when she had a high fever. She says she would give anything to see the world, the colours and the different people again. She also told me to respect life and not take it for granted. Ami, like Mrs. Dubose, would always ask me to get her a cup of tea or read her a section of newspaper. She compares me to her own daughter. She says that her daughter got into a very good university and now she's got a good job. She tells me not to go out with friends much and should stay at home to study. The differences between Mrs. Dubose and Ami are that at least she has a family member she could cherish and who loves her. Where as Mrs. Dubose only has a nigger woman. Like the book said, "she died beholden to nothing and nobody." Another contrast is that Ami does not live in a world where racism is a concern. Mrs. Dubose stood strongly on her opinion, which is opposing black people. If she didn't, she would have had a nigger friend who she would have talked too. Unlike Ami, racism does not influence her decisions. She could freely make friends with anyone without worrying about racism.

This particular individual showed two characteristics, loneliness and courage. Harper Lee defined loneliness as a result of not seeing a lot of people, not having people to talk to and the feeling of uselessness. It is a motion most people don't like to experience. One often feels sorry for lonely people and often tries to help them feel loved. Atticus seemed like the only person that cared and understood the old lady. He understood that despite her old age, she was a courageous lady and just needed that extra love and people to talk to. When Mrs. Dubose asked Jem to read to her another extra week, Atticus approved without question. He added that even if Mrs. Dubose did not ask, he would have still wanted him keep her company. The second characteristic about Mrs. Dubose was courage. Courage is the quality of mind that enables us to stand up to the things we fear. It was Mrs. Dubose's courage that Atticus respected the most. Even though she was very sick, she did not want to take her drugs. She wanted to die drug free.

Buy cheap Mrs. Dubose term paper

In conclusion, this character was a really forlorn character in the novel. By her actions, beliefs and high self-esteem, she earned a high respect from Atticus, for the bravest woman he had ever known. . Atticus also wanted Jem to see how strong and brave she really was by sending and insisting them to read to Mrs. Dubose. She was elderly and also a morphine addict. She made a promise with herself that she was going to die drug free. That took a lot of bravery to quit the morphine especially after being on the medicine for so long.

Love & Destruction

Life in the 'Roaring 0's' was characterized by parties. Filled with jazz music, and with people from all over town, life was a godsend. In these parties, people often developed friendly relationships. Some of the relationships led to love. In The Great Gatsby, Myrtle and Gatsby develop different, loving relationships, and thus are both destroyed by their belief that they can repeat the past.

Myrtle Wilson, wife of George Wilson, wishes she could repeat the past to repair the biggest mistake she made. She married George Wilson thinking he was a rich, strong man, but she found out the opposite after the wedding. Myrtle discovers that Wilson owns a dilapidated gas station, and that he borrowed a suit for the wedding. Myrtle describes her boring and lonely life by saying, "I knew right away I made a mistake" (Fitzgerald ). With her mistake fresh in her mind, Myrtle constantly looked for someone better. When she met Tom Buchanan on the train, they both fell in love. Thinking that this was her answer to her mistake, she began to have an affair with Tom. The only problem was that Tom was married to Daisy Buchanan. Daisy had captured the heart of another man, Jay Gatsby.

Jay Gatsby was a fictitious person created by Jim Gatz. After running away from home, and learning invaluable education from Dan Cody, he meets Daisy. They took romantic strides at night in the town, and they fall deeply in love. Gatsby's plans with Daisy were put on hold when World War One broke out. After serving as First Lieutenant and then as a Major, he returned to the states to find that his Daisy had married someone else. Refusing to accept reality, Gatsby devotes the rest of his life to be reunited with Daisy. This belief of reliving the past ends up destroying Jay Gatsby, and Myrtle Wilson as well. Help with essay on Love and Destruction in THe Great GatsbyEven though Myrtle, and Gatsby are destroyed by their beliefs, their relationships are different. Myrtle pursues a relationship with Tom to repair a mistake in her past. When she wants to go farther into the relationship, Tom denies her request and often bribes her with gifts. Sensing that Myrtle is up to something, George locks her in the upstairs room, and plans to take her on a trip. Myrtle, thinking that she may not see Tom again, breaks out of the room. Seeing the car Tom was driving earlier, she runs out to the middle of the street to stop the car. Instead of the car slowing down, it speeds up and rams into Myrtle. Myrtle is killed instantly, and this incident leads to Gatsby's demise.

Before Gatsby met his demise, he spent a great deal of time to relive the past. After the World War, Gatsby became a bootlegger to pursue Daisy. Becoming rich, Gatsby buys a large mansion across the bay from where Daisy resides. Every evening Gatsby would look towards the green light that marked the position of Daisy's dock. Nick, one evening, observed Gatsby reaching towards the green light, and then retreating to his mansion hoping one day that they might meet. When Gatsby and Daisy finally did meet, there was a sense of tension and shock. Once there fears were put to rest, it was like time had been reversed. But reality would soon catch up to them. When Gatsby wants Daisy to leave Tom, Daisy can't accept what Gatsby wants her to do when she says, "Oh, you want too much!" (Fitzgerald 1). AFRICA DESERVES MORE ATTENTION

"What the hell would I want to go to a place like Mombasa for? I just see myself in a pot of boiling water with all these natives dancing around me." These are the words of Toronto (Canada) Mayor Mel Lastman, before traveling to the Association of National Olympic Committees in Kenya to campaign for his city's bid to host the 008 Games. Lastman later apologized for the rather 'unfortunate' comment. Too late, his city lost the bid to Beijing, the capital of the Peoples Republic of China.

Darkest Africa or the Heart of Darkness. That is how many Westerners see this wretched continent of Africa, cursed with "war, starvation, a lot of poor people, and exotic animals." They imagine it as a huge, animal and disease-infested jungle, sprinkled with tribes of primitive people, some of whom are glad to meet white people…for they like variety in their diets.

Only a few Europeans, such as philanthropist David Livingstone and one explorer Henry Morton Stanley, were brave enough to enter the heart of the continent during the 1th Century. They somehow managed to navigate the rough territory, though none of them, believe it or not, drove Four Wheel Drive vehicles or managed not to end up in some huge boiling pot.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on AFRICA DESERVES MORE ATTENTION

David Livingstone went on to rename Mosi Uya Tunya (The Smoke that Thunders) after his queen, Victoria. While Stanley went one better and had the Bujagali Falls, at the source of the Nile in Uganda, renamed after himself! Reports from these intrepid explorers helped illuminate Africa in Europe. And for the wrong reasons too! Eventually the Western world learned that Africa was not only worth visiting, it was also worth looting.

The continent was and still is rich in mineral resources, diamonds, gold and copper. The British, French, Portuguese and others carved up Africa into colonies and expanded their empires, eliminating any Africans arrogant enough to believe that the land belonged to them. In fact, to them Africans were a plain nuisance. Even when they tried to measure up.

For instance, in 1874 that Fourah Bay College in Ghana, West Africa, sought and obtained affiliation with Durham University. The Times newspaper at that time declared that Durham should next affiliate with the London Zoo!

Today, Africa is a continent of 58 diverse nations, some as wealthy and developed as South Africa, others as poor and underdeveloped as Somalia. Yet many Westerners are still fairly ignorant about Africa, viewing it as a homogeneous territory, full of primitive people, many who have not discovered the merits of democracy, capitalism and cable television.

The ignorance and apathy is troubling, especially in times of crisis, when Africa needs help from the West. Such was the case in Mozambique and Zimbabwe when massive flooding left thousands of people stranded atop houses and trees. The United States, Britain and other wealthy nations were slow to react, almost as though they had bought into that ludicrous myth by saying, It's no big deal. Those Africans are used to living in trees.

A quick response could have saved many lives. A headline in Mozambique's daily newspaper Noticias captured the prevalent feeling West Closes Its Eyes to Tragedy in Mozambique. To their credit, the United States, Britain and others eventually sent aid, but one can't help wondering whether a similar disaster in Europe would have generated a speedier response. END

Margarita was the pampered daughter of Don Raimundo Pareja, a very rich aristocrat, who in 1765 was General Collector of Callao, the port of Lima. Margarita was one of those young women of Lima who with their beauty charmed all the men and the devil himself.

About this time there arrived from Spain a dashing young felow named Luis Alcazar, who had a bachelor uncle in Lima, an extremely rich and proud Aragonese. Naturally until the time time for inheriting his uncle came about, our Luis was poorer than a church mouse.

During the procession of Santa Rosa, Luis met the lovely Margarita. The young lady filled up his eyes and pierced his heart. Luis told her many fine things and although she did not say yes or no, her smiles made it plain that the young man was very much to her taste.

The truth of the matter is that they fell madly in love.

As lovers forget that arithmetic exists, Luis did not consider his poverty an obstacle in the consummation of their love, and he went to see Margarita's father with the avowed purpose of asking for his daughter's hand.

Don Raimundo was not pleased by the request and dismissed the young man, telling him that Margarita was still too young for taking a husband because, in spite of her eighteen years, she still played with dolls.

But the truth was that Don Raimundo did not want to be the father-in-law of a pauper, and he said so to his friends, one whom brought his piece of gossip to Don Honorato, as the Aragonese uncles was called. Being prouder than the Cid, he shouted angrily. "How do you like that? To snub my nephew, when there's not a finer-looking lad in all of Peru? The nerve! How dare that little, insignificant Collector?"

Angry and nervous, Margarita whined and pulled her hair. As the days went by she lost weight and talked of becoming a nun.

Don Raimundo became alarmed, called doctors, consulted druggists, and they all declared that the girl was becoming consumptive and that the one and only live-saving medicine for her was not sold at the drugstore.

Either marry her to the man of her choice or lock her up in a coffin such was the alternative.

Don Raimundo (a father, after all!) went immediately to the home of Don Honorato and said to him

"I want to marry my nephew to Margarita tomorrow, otherwise the girl will be bound for the cemetery."

"I'm sorry but this cannot be," replied Don Honorato; "my nephew is a pauper and for your beautiful daughter you must find someone fabulously rich."

The interview was a stormy one. The more Don Raimundo pleaded, the more Don Honorato objected. Since nothing was being accomplished, Luis intervened

"But, uncle, it is not fair to kill someone who is not to blame."

"Do you insist on marrying her? Is this what you wish?"

"Yes, uncle, with all my heart."

"Very well, my boy, I'm willing to please you, but on one condition Don Raimundo must swear that he will not give his daughter a penny, or leave her a penny in his will"

At this point a new and heated discussion ensued

"But, man, "said Don Raimundo, "my daughter has a dowry of twenty thousand duros."

"We give up the dowry. The girl must come to her husband's house with nothing but the clothes she's wearing."

"I want to give her at least the furniture and the trousseau," insisted Don Raimundo.

"Not a pin!" shouted Don Honorato. "Not a pin! Otherwise, call it off, and if the girl dies you are to blame."

"But, Don Honorato, my daughter needs to take along at least a change of chemise."

"Very well, to end the discussion I consent to the chemise," exclaimed Don Honorato.

The next day Don Raimundo and Don Honorato went early to Saint Francis Church to hear mass, and, according to the agreement, when the priest raised the Blessed Host, Margarita's father said

"I swear to give my daughter nothing but a chemise."

And Don Raimundo kept his oath the letter, for, after the chemise, he gave nothing else to his daughter.

The Brussels lace with which the chemise was trimmed cost two thousand seven hundred duros, the drawstring at the neck was a chain of diamonds that cost not less that thirty thousand duros. The newlyweds made the Aragonese uncle believe that the chemise was worth not more than a duro, and thus everything ended happily and the stubborn Don Honorato was not able to annul the marriage or to ask for a divorce.

While reading greeting cards at the drugstore today I over heard a conversation between two men. One said, "She could have avoided a beating by not getting involved with him in the first place." To which the other man replied, "Yeah, she should have seen the signs, I mean she mush have known he would hurt her." Picking up another greeting card to read I stated loudly "Yeah, she could have used magic and consulted her Crystal Ball too … Right Boys?" Startled by my comment they darted for the door leaving their items behind. Immediately I wanted to add them to the "All Men are Assholes Club, " Instead I decided to go home and type up a little questionnaire, kind of like a "poll" for men. The questionnaire was simple and contained three questions

1)Do you think women know if a man is Domestically violent? Yes/No

)Reading the above question again, do you think there are warning signs? Yes/No

Custom Essays on "The Questionnaire"

)Domestic abuse is a crime, should be taken on a lighter note? Yes/No

Feeling like an investigative reporter on an adrenaline high, I printed out a bunch of the questionnaires, grabbed a few pens, and headed back to the store. Getting men to participate in my investigative poll on Abuse was a little tricky. Some of them filled in their answers not caring what I thought. Others not trusting my intentions, crumbled up the questionnaire, threw it on the ground, and walked away shaking their heads. Regardless of their participation they all had the same question for me, "are you a cop?" "No I am not a police officer." Actually I am gathering this information for an article I am submitting to our local newspaper on Domestic Abuse. Hopefully you'll catch it in the paper the day it prints, and thank you for your participation."

It took me over an hour to get ten men to participate in my questionnaire. "Ten men are better than none, " I thought to myself," so I wrapped up my investigation and headed home. Nine out of ten men answered all three questions with a "yes" answer. These results were devastating to me, inspiring me to submit the following letter to the editor

"Domestic Abuse Survivor"

I am a Domestic Abuse Survivor, and I have a few things to say to those of you who think a woman can predict domestic abuse, and a few more things to say to those of you who think lightly of Domestic Abuse.

No woman can predict if a man will be abusive any more than a woman

Deliberately gets involved with an abuser. Women don't have magical powers and we are not able to pick an abuser out in a crowd, out in a classroom, at a bank, or even at the park while you watch him play with his child for crying out loud.

There are no tattoos on their forehead warning people they are abusive, they don't have flashing Neon signs on their back saying, "Warning, Potentially Harmful to Others", Nor do they have a red flag stamped on their forehead symbolizing they are a ticking time bomb ready to go off. ! If this were the case certainly this would be heavenly, but the fact of the matter is that most abusive men are silent attackers. So I guess prediction is out of the question after all, now isn't it.

Now let me say a few words to those of you who think lightly of Domestic Abuse.

I realize you are entitled to your own personal opinion, Luckily so I am. And in my opinion Domestic abuse is never to be taken lightly. Lightly what? Lightly beaten into submission, lightly bruised, lightly battered? Are you trying to tell me that if a woman is only lightly beaten that it is ok to beat her? I think not! And For the life of me I cannot relate to those of you who have the "she deserved it attitude", or to those of you who assume "she should have known better and not gotten involved with him to begin with."

Where did you find the audacity to make a statement like that to a woman and think nothing of it anyway? How did you become so delusional, and how is it you can assume we should have known better? Has someone given you magical powers to see into the future making it possible for you to help others avoid making poor choices in their lives? Do you know something the rest of us do not know? In my opinion you don't know much of anything. And by not knowing, I have just revoked your privilege of making ludicrous conclusions about abused women.

1) After being liberated from Buchenwald, Eliezer looked in a mirror. ¡°From the depth of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at [him] (10). In what ways had Elie become a ¡°corpse¡±? Discuss and illustrate.

Towards the very end of Night, which is an autobiographical novel written by Elie Wiesel, Elie quietly uttered ¡°From the depth of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me.¡± One of the ideas Elie meant to insert into the reader's mind is that he had become a corpse in both the physical and spiritual sense. During his one year in captivity, Elie was beaten, bruised, and starved constantly by his oppressive captors. The Kapos beat him so often that he soon ¡°ceased to feel any pain from their blows¡± (4). In addition to the beatings, they were fed scant amounts of food that were barely enough for survival. In fact, they were fed so little that men eventually put their lives on the line in order to obtain an extra bowl of soup. During one of the several bombings which the captives were forced to endure, a man crawled over to a huge cauldron of soup, knowing that he would be shot if caught. Though daring, the man sadly did not survive his escapade.

Before long, Elie stated that ¡°[he] had neither the will nor the strength to get up¡± (84). Furthermore, ¡°In every stiffened corpse [he saw himself]. And soon [he] should not even see them [he should] be one of them-a matter of hours¡± (85). He even went so far as to refer to himself as a skeleton ¡°I was dragging with me this skeletal body¡¦¡± (84). Somehow, through all this agony and anguish, Elie miraculously survived. His physical body healed and he tried to live the normal life that had been almost snatched away from him. Spiritually, on the other hand, he had essentially been killed by the suffering he had been forced to witness and endure.

Initially, Elie was a piously devout boy who was very committed in his religious studies. He testified that he ¡°believed profoundly. During the day, [he] studied the Talmud, and at night [he] ran to the synagogue to weep over the destruction of the Temple¡± (1). However, as the deportation commenced and he was forced to view the carnage, brutality, and sorrow that was prevalent wherever he went, his belief in God suffered. That zealously religious boy seemed utterly robbed of his faith in God. And rather than pray and ask God for deliverance from evil, he thought angrily of God whenever he saw unreasonable death and mourning. Do my essay on The Empty Shell CHEAP !

¡°What are You, my God,¡± I thought angrily, ¡°compared to this afflicted crowd, proclaiming to You their faith, their anger, their revolt? What does Your greatness mean, Lord of the universe, in the face of all this weakness, this decomposition, and this decay? Why do You still trouble their sick minds, their crippled bodies?¡± (6)

Elie repeatedly asked himself why he should bless God's name; he could not

comprehend why God stood silent in the midst of the unspeakable torment his people were going through. He retained this attitude for most of the novel, yet when he saw a son abandon his father during a death march to another camp, Elie prayed to God to give him the strength never to do that himself ¡°And in spite of myself, a prayer rose in my heart, to that God in whom I no longer believed¡± (87). One might ask why he would pray to a God ¡°in whom [he] no longer believed.¡± (87)? Perhaps his belief in God was reunited with him in his hour of greatest need, during that death march when he genuinely wished that the grim reaper would sweep him away from this ephemeral world of horror in which he was trapped. After his ghastly ordeal in the camps, Elie was, in fact, an empty shell devoid of any physical or spiritual remnant of what he had been. Nevertheless, he was able to leave this shell behind and start a new life, one full of meaning and purpose.

This quotation demonstrated how much of an extreme change Elie underwent. He transformed from a healthy, religious boy into a corpse-like, almost atheistic young man in one short year. This excerpt does not detract from the fact that Elie went through the unspeakable; in fact, it brings up more memories of Elie's horrors; yet, it also goes to show that Elie was able to survive beyond the horrible suffering he was forced to endure¡¦but at what price?

There are not two similar leaves in a forest, as well as there are not two commensurate attitudes of different person even in completely the same situation. Some will appreciate while others will show disgust to avant-guard art; some will be optimistic and active in face of difficulty while others are reduced to pessimism and passivism in the same delimma. Even the same person may well make different decision when the same thing happens again. Nevertheless, we shouldn't attribute all these seemingly incompatability and sporadic attitudes merely to the influence of immediate situation. People's attitudes are actually determined by some more further internal characteristic.

In our everyday life, we can easily find abundant evidences that, no matter what the immediate situation is, people with similar personal traits are likely to show parallel attitudes and make compatable decisions. For example, in a controversial debate, those aggressive ones always stand up to present their ideas, while introvert ones keep silence and look on. When some celebrity blunders and gossips flooded all kinds of media, those sticking to ethical discipline will certainly denounce the misbehaviour, those caring the society will study the influence of it and try to prevent the public from imitation or being undermined by the impact, while those who seldom take notice of public affairs remain indifferent. Conspicuous statistical data can show it is the intrinsic personality such as ethics, values and so on that guides people in delivering their attitudes to anything happening around.

Some people may argue that, in face of emmergency, people tend to be controlled by their immediate situation rather than their internal characteristic in making decision or showing opinion. This seems to be true in that people may not have enough time to think over the issue and decide their consequently behaviour accordingly thus being manuvoured by instinctive reaction to immediate situation. However, so called instinct of people is in fact cultivated through the life time of a person. He or she always has to make decisions or show attitudes to every happening around him or her, from as triffle as choosing drink to as crucial as deciding what to do in face of impending danger. Such experiences, no matter the outcoming is successful or not, help a person to modify his or her point of view, to amend his/her behaviour accordingly and thus the intrinsic characteristics come into being gradually. No matter what the immediate situation is, people turn to their experience-based intrinsic, or more precisely the abridged version of normal decision making pattern, for similar cases they have experienced before and decide what their attitude will be this time.

But we should never fail to recognize the effect of immediate situation on the determination of one's attitude. To some extent, the immediate situation is a factor of fluctuation that influent the result of determination. The less time and knowledge of the specific situation one has, the wider fluctuating range his/her determination of attitude will have, because under such circumstances, people have no enough time to recall much of their experience for reference, or the lack of knowledge over current situation makes it hard to find corresponding practices of before. We have to gamber after our intrinsic personality has set down a basic point of determination.

Custom writing service can write essays on People's attitudes are determined more by their immediate situation or surrounding

In all, immediate situation does have impact on our determinations of attitude, however, such impact is more in a modification aspect rather than in a definitive status. It is our intrinsic characteristics, which are largely formed and ever-modified by the experience of past situations, that dominates us in our life.

Please note that this sample paper on People's attitudes are determined more by their immediate situation or surrounding is for your review only. The Film Industry

Film as an art blossomed in the 10s and in to the 10's becoming a favorite entertainment in American and World culture. The demand for films had dramatically grown, its future importance become evident. The world had no clue what was in store for them on the "Silver Screen".

The ten-year period, between the end of world War One and the Stock Market Crash, allowed Film to grow tremendously. The studio system, created during the 10's. Long-term contracts for stars, block bookings, and increasingly rigid control of directors and stars by the studios production chief became part of the everyday Movie making business. Big films now had big money supporting them. The Five Major Studios named The Big Five included; Warner Bros. Pictures (est. 1), MGM (est. 14), RKO (est. 18), Paramount Pictures (est. 16), and Twentieth Century Fox (est. 15). Other studios founded included; Universal and Columbia. Venues to support the films started popping up all around America, like the now-famous Chinese Theater in Hollywood in 17. The population of Hollywood had ballooned from 5,000 to 10,000 between 11 and 15. The Hollywood sign (originally HOLLYWOODLAND) was built above town in 1 for $1,000 to advertise the center of movie mania

Now motion pictures were part of American culture, and the actors and actresses were becoming more and more a famous. Movie stars were born, among the firsts were Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, who both had many Box-Office successes. In front of the Chinese Theater the "Stars of Hollywood" placed their handprints and footprints in cement to be immortalized as a celebrity. The Motion Picture Academy (the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) (est. 17) created the Academy Awards, not yet known as Oscars to recognize great films and filmmakers. The first "Best Picture" was awarded Wings in 17. Other stars like Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd brought about the boom of lighthearted comedies. Chaplin's physical humor, like slapstick ,drawing from mime, amused audiences across America. The uniquely American westerns film genre became popular in the early days of the cinema. The first major Western, a landmark film, was director James Cruzes The Covered Wagon (1), advertised as the biggest thing the screen has had since The Birth of a Nation. Many different genres such as horror and gangster films captured Americas growing interest in cinema.

Silent films of the late 10'swere not really silent but underscored by sound organs, gramophone discs, musicians, sound effects specialists, live actors who delivered dialogue, and rarely full-scale orchestras. In 16 Warner Bros. launched the first "Talkies"(movies with sound) with the development of a synchronized sound system called Vitaphone that had been developed by Bell laboratories. On August 6, 16, in New York, Don Juan became the First Full length picture with sound recorded on wax disks. Although it was not as successful as Warner Bros. had hoped it marked a new era of entertainment. Walt Disney's Steamboat Willie (18), was the first speaking cartoon with synchronized sound. Mickey Mouse made his first appearance, and Disney started his Silly Symphony animated cartoon series.

The 10's, known as "The Golden Age of Hollywood", brought many first. The Production Code set film guidelines (not yet strictly enforced until 14) regarding sex, violence, religion, and crime in 10 and, the first drive-in theatre was created in Los Angeles (at Pico and Westwood Boulevard) As sound film continued to develop color now entered the industry. Originally just two and three color films debuted, but the first film (a short) in three-color Technicolor was Walt Disneys animated Flowers and Trees (1). Hollywoods first full-length feature film photographed entirely in three-strip Technicolor was Rouben Mamoulians Becky Sharp (15). In 1 both The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind were expensively produced with Technicolor. The ruby slippers and a yellow brick road surely would not have been the same with out full bright color.

In just twenty short years the film industry and grown from a rare novelty to one of the largest entertainment industries in the United Sates as well as across the world. Movie stars and classic pictures would captivate countless audiences, allowing them to laugh, cry, and fear together. America had no clue what future surprises awaited them.

This tale is not a typical romance story where the couple live happily ever after, but actually turns into a comedy for the reader as we see Tony's plan go from bad to worse. This story is a 'tale within a tale' probably told by locals in a village pub where it captures Dorset village life where everyone likes a bit of juicy gossip.

Tony kytes is not the typical ladies man, good looking, funny or rich, in fact quite the opposite. Tony is described by the narrator (a local) as 'unsmiling' and it 'was as if he couldn't laugh without great pain', this would be bad for a ladies man because a women would find a person boring without a sense of humour or if the man didn't show a sense of happiness it would put the woman of the man. The narrator tells the reader how that even though Tony had a bad time with 'small pox' leaving him with 'seams here and there' on his face, it never 'hurt his looks in a woman's eye', so there must be something about Tony for the women to like him.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Is Tony Kytes an arch deciever

Tony is very easily swayed by women, and if he was a genuine cheat he would not be so easily swayed and would know his own mind and would not be letting the women over take. However when a pretty woman says something everything that Tony had planned to say goes out of his mind, this is because he gets very distracted a real deceiver would not get panicky and forget what he is doing, for example when unity says "can you say I'm not pretty', Tony should say straight away no but I have a fianc , but in fact Tony has to take a minute to look he up and down.

All the way through the tale Tony lets the whole thing get out of hand. Because Tony cannot say no to any of the girls, he makes the mistake of letting all three women get in the same wagon at the same time. He gets stuck in this situation and ends up leaving himself and the reader wondering how he is going to get everyone out, without them being aware of each others presence. The first woman happened to get onto the wagon by asking Tony for a lift home, when Tony saw his future wife he asked unity to get into the back 'under the tarpaulin in the back'. His fianc said that she was going to meet up with him, but when Tony saw his first love he asked his fianc to get 'under the tarpaulin in the front'. However when Tony sees his dad coming towards him he asked the third woman to duck, so as each woman in turn gets onto the wagon, Tony panics and makes the one who has got on before hide, saying silly things like 'will ye lie down in the back of the wagon under the tarpaulin' until all three are hiding in the back of the wagon because they all have a thing about the cheat. An arch-deceiver would manipulate the situation, meaning that he would take charge and control and make things happen the way he wanted and not do stupid things like Tony does.

A ladies man would be good at holding a conversation when in a bit of a panic. However Tony is not. He clearly cannot hold a half decent conversation. When talking to Unity, Millie or Hannah his voice is lowers and quietness so only the girl he is talking to can hear him. An example of this is when he was talking to Hannah, the girl he really loved, 'he spoke tender and tenderer………in a whisper at last'. This way of talking gives away the fact that he is lying through his teeth.

Tony does not get his first, the girl he really wanted. A real arch-deceiver would get what he wanted all the time, but Tony ends up with the woman he had in the first place, Millie! and this was not the girl he wanted to love. After all of the girls found that they were sharing the back of the wagon with each other, they were so humiliated that they told Tony, 'never; would I sooner marry no one', however they did not mean this and they were hoping that Tony would come after them, but Millie was the only one who said she would have him.

Often in life humans tend to think that they control their own fate. In the play

Oedipus Rex, Sophocles can be seen as teaching a moral that fate is pre-determined

and that humans cannot escape their own destiny. Oedipus, Lauis, and Jocasta all

try to control their own fate, however, they find out that they cannot escape their destiny. Help with essay on Oedipus RexLauis is one of the characters in Oedipus Rex that tries to control his fate. When

he asks a oracle at Delphi to tell him his prophecy and the oracle tells Lauis that he and

his wife Jocasta will have a child, however, the oracle also tells Lauis that he will die at

the hands of his son. Since Lauis is told this he decides to kill the child when it is

born. Once the child is born Lauis makes the babys feet bound together and exposes it

on a lonely mountain where he thinks it will soon die. After Lauis does this he has no

more fear about getting killed by his own son. However, a shepherd would save the

baby and eventually the baby Oedipus would become a man and accidentally kill

someone who would turn out to be Lauis his father. Even though Lauis tries to control

his own fate, in the end his prophecy turns out to be true. Jocasta addresses the fact

that Lauis tries to make sure that he can control his own fate.

But his child had not been three days in this world before the King had pierced the babys ankles and left him to die on a lonely mountainside. Thus, Apollo never caused that child to kill his father, and it was not Lauis fate to die at the hands of his son, as he had feared. (Oedipus Rex II.ii).

What Jocasta is saying is that Lauis didnt want to die at the hands of his son so he tried

to control his fate by having the baby killed. However, Lauis learns the hard way that

fate cannot be messed around with.

Another character that tries to control his own fate is Oedipus. Oedipus like Lauis

is also told his prophecy by an oracle at Delphi. The oracle tells Oedipus that he

will kill his father, marry his mother, and have children. Since Oedipus is told this

he decides to never go back to Corinth where his mother and father live. However,

Oedipus believes Polybus is his father but he really is not. So Oedipus is really

not getting away from his real parents, it turns out that he is actually getting closer

to them. This is one way of how Oedipus tries to control his own destiny. As Oedipus

is on his way to Delphi he is almost forced off the road by the man and Oedipus ends

up falling on the man and killing him. The man turns out to be Lauis his real father, so

Oedipus ends up killing his father without even knowing it. Oedipus also ends up

marrying Jocasta who is his mother. By doing this Oedipus has fulfilled his prophecy

of killing his father and marrying his mother. Even when Oedipus does know what

he has done he still doesnt admit it to himself, he keeps digging for more evidence

until it is very clear that he is the murderer of Lauis. As Oedipus is finding out that

he might be the murderer of Lauis he says,

Ah if I was created so, born to this fate, who could deny the savagery of God? Oh holy majesty of heavenly powers! May I never see that day! Never! (Oedipus Rex II.ii).

By saying this Oedipus is saying how upset he will be if his prophecy turns out to be

true. Jennifer Lewin says in her criticism about Sophocles,

Ultimately, while we can regard Oedipus as both admirable for his leadership

skills and noble intentions and imperfect for his overconfidence and harsh treatment of others, he is a figure whose fate inspires pity and terror because of his ability to endure misfortune. (Lewin 1).

Lewin is saying that even though Oedipus is admirable he is doomed by his destiny.

It can be seen that even though Oedipus shows admiration because of his search for

the truth he continually tries to alter his destiny and escape his fate.

Jocasta portarys another example of how people try to change their fate and

escape their own destiny. Jocasta knows that Oedipus is the murderer of her husband

Lauis who is also the father of Oedipus and Jocasta knows that Oedipus is her son

because a messenger from Corinth tells Oedipus that Polybus was not his father and

that he got Oedipus when he was a baby from one of Lauis servants. Though Jocasta

is pretty sure that Oedipus is her son she tries to stop Oedipus from finding out the truth

because she does not want the truth to ruin her life. When the messenger is telling

Smoking is one of the most common and most dangerous of all habits a human possesses. Everyone knows that smoking is hazardous to their health, but millions continue to smoke. There's a clear warning on the side of every pack of cigarettes by the Surgeon General, but people choose to ignore it. It is a proven fact that smoking is harmful. People smoke because they can't quit, but there are many reasons why they start in the first place.

Smoking causes many problems to a person's health. Lung cancer, heart disease, stained teeth, bad skin, and years off a person's life. Why would people smoke if they know they have a risk of obtaining all these things? The only thing smoking does is make a person feel somewhat lightheaded, which allows them to relax, concentrate better, or some other reasons they come up with to make an excuse for their addiction.

Ninety percent of smokers start in their teen years. This is because teenagers want to make an image for themselves. Either their friends influence them or they want to be like someone they admire. Adults are the main influence on young smokers. They may have an older brother or sister they look up to that smokes. They may have an idol on TV, movies, or radio that smokes. They admire and worship these people, and by smoking they think they can be as popular as them. The fact is, a lot of these stars die from problems they got from smoking. Humphrey Bogart died from lung cancer. Lucille Ball died from heart problems. Many of today's actors may have a good chance of dying because of smoking, and it does not provide a good influence to their young fans.

"Smoking is cool."

Cheap University Papers on Why Do People Smoke?

Peer pressure is what a lot of teens experience. They may start smoking so they can be accepted by their peers. Smoking gives them a rebellious or bad attitude feel. That is what they think is "being cool". A kid may be offered a smoke, and if he doesn't take it, he may be called a wimp or get laughed at. They show they can start smoking to prove themselves to their addicted friends. This chain just goes on and on throughout the world.

Some people start smoking knowing that it is bad for them. They may have had a bad experience in their life, and they think their health is no longer important. Their life is not important to them anymore. Depression is one reason why people start smoking. Sometimes they punish themselves because of the miserable life they have lived. Things such as divorce, boyfriend or girlfriend break up, a friend's or family member's death and such situations give a person a reason to smoke, to take their minds off of it.

Other people say smoking helps them relax. The lightheadedness takes away their worries from stress in school, at work, and in everyday life. Smoking makes them feel at ease, not having to think about anything. A lot of people also smoke when they are nervous. All these reasons are just situations or excuses for their nicotine addiction. Very few people can quit from smoking. They give these reasons of relaxation, concentration, being cool, because they started and can't quit. Besides the peer pressure, people start smoking because of curiosity. Curiosity killed the cat, and can kill a person if they start smoking. Because there are so many people that smoke, people wonder why that is and try it to see how it feels. Then they become hooked.

Despite the warnings, the results we have seen, and the information about tobacco, more and more people start to smoke. Tobacco is a drug. Tobacco and heroine are probably the only two useless drugs out there. So why is tobacco legal, when it has no useful purpose, and does nothing but harm the body? Because the tobacco industry is too big of a business and makes a lot of money. If tobacco was introduced into today's world it would be banned. Yet the tobacco industry lives on, and they continue to increase the nicotine to satisfy all their customers' needs.

Smoking is probably the most senseless thing a person can take up. Yet it is far too common. If people find out a certain food product had caused a cancer in someone, no one would ever buy it, and it would be taken off the shelf. Yet cigarettes continue to be sold. If a person dies from the food at a restaurant, people would hardly come to that restaurant. Yet people still buy cigarettes. There may nothing people can do about tobacco, except not ever start in the first place.

Theodore Roosevelt In His First Administration

Theodore Roosevelt was declared the twenty-sixth president of the United States just before the age of forty-three. Making him the youngest president in our nations history. He would keep all of the members in former president McKinley's cabinet and wanted to keep the same policies as McKinley. He had too much originality to follow someone else's plans instead of designing his own. Theodore Roosevelt's presidency came at a difficult time as well which showed his true character as well as his excellent perseverance as a man who changed the future in his terms as president.

Many business leaders were worried that Roosevelt would incorporate many of the policies that he did as governor of New York. Many of these things included his control over industry. Congress would be very difficult to negotiate with in his term as president in having them act on his recommendations.

Theodore Roosevelt was mostly known in his first administration as president as being a so-called "trust buster." Many Americans were worried about trusts because they were increasing rapidly as well as raising prices of common goods. His first message to congress was in December of 101 stating, "Captains of industry… have on the whole done great good to our people, Combination and concentration should be not prohibited, but supervised, and within reasonable limits, controlled." Theodore Roosevelt

The Roosevelt Corollary, which was when the Dominican Republic could not pay back many European countries they had borrowed money, was to settle the disputes between the many countries and looking back on the Monroe Doctrine he was keeping European Countries out of Western affairs.

The Panama Canal was started in his First Administration as president and was completed when he had begun his second. Roosevelt persuaded congress to approve building 10 battleships and 4 armored cruisers for the U.S. Navy. He believed that having a larger fleet would help the nation in international affairs and that they would need to switch across from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans regularly. A canal through Central America would be very necessary. Roosevelt began to negotiate with the Colombian government to see if they would allow the United States to build a canal through Panama. The negotiations paid off when the United States was granted land in panama to build a canal that would join the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. After the canal was completed he visited it while still being in office and becoming the first president to visit a foreign country while in office.

There was an Alaska boundary dispute while Roosevelt was in his First Administration, which was when Canada claimed a line deciding where the Alaska boundary began when gold was discovered in the Klondike. The reason Canada claimed a certain line was that it was located in a place that was only access able through Canada, which would boost Canada's economy greatly due to the spending of many miners. Juries from both countries were set to settle this dispute and the land was granted to the United States.

Roosevelt was also known as a conservationist because of his achievements in expanding national parks, and establishing in 105, the United States Forest Service. He set aside 18 sites as national monuments in his attempts to preserve wildlife. He created the first 51 federal bird reservations as well as the first four national game preserves.

Life in the White House was always chaotic, as his children and friends would come to be known as the "White House Gang." He sometimes joined his children in there games. There was an incident when his children were punished for shooting spitballs at a portrait of a former president by the name of Andrew Jackson.

The 6th president of the United States was a very honorable one in that he would get things done for the best interest of the nation as well as helping the world. He also helped our great nation to prosper from fascism and communism during the Second World War. Theodore Roosevelt improved living conditions, built and started many organizations, and has been honored as one of our nations finest presidents.
