For Forester, owning land was not at all what he expected. By buying his new piece of land, Forster automatically became this person that he should be. In this society, the man with land never went to heaven, because he felt heavy, because they owned slaves, and owning slaves is not looked good upon from God. Through figurative language, references to the bible, word choice; Forster conveys his tone of sin and regret towards his current situation.

Forster's attitude of sin and regret are present when the author mentions how he feels about owning land and being a newly freed man. Forster "feel(s) heavy" now that he has his own land, and his present situation is almost "sinful" because men with land do not ascend into Heaven. Forster clearly allows the reader to know how he feels about who he has become. Forster is not pleased with himself, and he thinks now, becoming a hypocrite, owning land and slaves, will not be accepted into Heaven. Forster had no idea of the "difficulties" and "horrors" associated with being a free man. Now that Forster was free, he is welcomed into the real world, and many responsibilities accompany that welcome. Forster went out and bought land to make money off of, and he comes across obstacles such as asceticism, and having to choose his God.

Forster's use of figurative language is used in a broad range of ways, from simple similes, to developing an even bigger, more complex analogies, all tying in with the negative theme of sin and regret. "A comparatively slim camel passing through the eye of as needle and being woven into a robe" is used to portrait the allusion of little things in this world, all working for God, but Forster feels he has "failed," and will, ultimately, go to Hell. Working to fulfill God's purpose, a camel is able to squeeze through the tiny eye of a needle, because it is for God. The author regrets ever not working for God, and committing the sins he did, such as purchasing the land .

Making several biblical references through the passage helps certain people to better understand, and to produce more in-depth comparisons, with support from the bible which helps to develop the more sinful theme. Forster decides to make comparisons to the "Jordan" River and to "bathe" in it. Being cleaned in the river means that individual is sinless, but owning the land, one must own slaves to keep the land working right. There is no way a landowner could honestly cleanse himself while ordering slaves around at home, it is almost like leading two different lives. "The Gospels" are used to let people know what to do and what not to do, and most people find following the Gospel "difficult ground" to live on. Landowners automatically defy the Gospel by having slaves, no where in the Gospel does it say to have slaves, so the landowners already are in sin.

Foster's tools in developing the negative attitude towards his situation were figurative language, word choice and going back to biblical connections. Foster's figurative language not only is used to describe a certain occurrence, is also compares two different things to each other, but still ties in the theme of sin and regret. Using the bible, Foster was able to support his statements well, and even helped those who are familiar with the bible to better understand the author's meaning.
