First Baby

The instant I found out I was having a baby for the first time; anxieties of what was to come were overwhelming. I was nineteen years old, unmarried, and scarred to death of forever being someone's mother. It was February 17, 15 when the doctor came in the exam room and confirmed the results of the pregnancy test. At that moment I grasped what was to occur being discomforts, inevitable changes in the body, doctor's visits and difficulties that may arise in the course of pregnancy until delivery.

During the months that followed life was fairly normal. Morning sickness was non-existent and working a job was still possible until maternity leave was available. As the changes with my body began taking place during the second trimester of pregnancy, I realized my clothing was not fitting anymore and I was tired all the time. Now that it was physically obvious that I was pregnant no longer could I sleep on my stomach, tying my shoes was virtually impossible and standing for long periods of time was becoming extremely taxing. Family and friends constantly wanted to rub my tummy to make the baby kick. Feeling my baby move inside my body is unlike anything I have ever experienced.

Doctor visits were routine, during the first trimester they were once a month, involving weighing in as well as performing sonograms on baby to ensure proper development and learning the proposed due date. Approaching the second trimester, appointments were scheduled every other week; it was at this point in

the pregnancy that I was able to hear the baby's heartbeat. As the third trimester began I was seeing the doctor every week. Normally, that is not the case however I had become "high risk" having developed a condition known as gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes can be harmful to the fetus, in the sense that, if the mother does not monitor her blood sugar at birth the child can go into what is known as "sugar shock". I was required to test my blood sugar daily and bring those readings along when I attended doctor appointments. In the course of my third trimester I also learned the sex of my child.

Tuesday, September 1, 15 was the day of reckoning, or so I thought. I was scheduled to be at the hospital at six o'clock in the morning to begin the labor process and have my baby. I arrived on time and was subsequently whisked off to my room to embark on a journey that would forever change my life. The nurses prepared me for the doctor who emerged at eight thirty in the morning to break my water. Around ten thirty the anesthesiologist came to administer the epidural. Several friends and family members arrived to offer support, encouragement in addition to presents for the baby. I was in labor for approximately eight hours and delivered a healthy baby boy at four thirty five in the afternoon.

For the first time since being informed that I was pregnant, there was no fear, anxiety or worry. Looking at the magnificent creature that I had just given birth to was enough to take away all of my tribulations. My son weighed in at eight pounds and four ounces, was twenty one inches long, a head full of hair and the

most gorgeous skin ever seen. Even though there were many discomforts and some difficulties with the pregnancy, nothing was amiss with the baby. That was

almost eight years ago and a day that I will never forget how could I, it is also the day that I was born 0 years earlier!
