William Marcy "Boss" Tweed was born on April , 18. He was born in New York City, New York. He attended public school and had many jobs. These jobs included a chair maker, a bookkeeper, and a volunteer firefighter. He was also a member of his father's firm. He became an alderman in 1851 in New York City. Tweed was elected into the House of Representatives in 185. He was in Congress from 185 to 1855. In 1857, he became a power in the Tammany Society. He built his power by what was called, "The Tweed Ring". He elected friends and colleagues. He was the chairman of the Tammany general committee. He gained all power of the Democratic Party in NYC. He was able to control nominations and party patronage. Tweed became senator of New York in 1868. He made many business deals during his term. Along with the members of "The Tweed Ring" they defrauded New York of thirty million dollars. They also used illegal means to elect New York governor, New York City mayor, and the Assembly Speaker.


Tammany tried to get rid of the "Tweed Ring", but they failed. It was Thomas Nast a political cartoonist, who helped put an end to it. Nast raised public awareness with his cartoons of Tweed and "The Tweed Ring". These cartoons were put in The New York Times. Samuel J. Tilden gathered the evidence to convict Tweed. In 1871, he was convicted and sentenced to twelve years in prison. However, he got by only serving one, due to higher court reducing the sentence. But after the year, he was arrested again. But he escaped jail and went to Spain. In 1876, he was brought back to the U.S. and put in a jail in New York City. Then,. On April 1, 1878, William Marcy "Boss" Tweed died in jail.
